Coming Soon from Serious Poulp: The 7th Continent
September 27, 2015 - 9:21am
Serious Poulp has announced a new game that will be coming to Kickstarter soon called The 7th Continent. The game is a coop For 1- 4 players and has a playing time of 5 - 1800 minutes. No that's not a typo the game can take 30 hours or more to finish. Now Serious Poulp doesn't expect you to sit down for 30 minutes of playing time so there is a way to 'save' the game state to continue at a later time. I'll go into more detail as I describe the game below.
In The 7th Continent, a "choose-your-own-adventure" exploration board game, you choose a character and begin your adventure on your own or with a team of other explorers. Inspired by the Fighting Fantasy book series, you will discover the extent of this wild new land through a variety of terrain and event cards. In a land fraught with danger and wonders, you have to use every ounce of wit and cunning to survive, crafting tools, weapons and shelter to ensure your survival. As indicated in the quote above The 7th Continent is a card based game of adventure and exploration. You and up to 3 other players were part of an expedition that discovered a 7th continent, however upon returning home you experience horrible nightmares and visions finally falling asleep in exhaustion. Upon awaking your realize you have been transported to a strange island with very limited supplies and will need to explore this strange place to find out what is happening and get back home. During the game you will explore the island on a board made completely out of cards. Each of the cards indicates in which direction you can travel and what card number should be placed in that direction. You should pay very close attention to each of the cards though as the art on them may contain hidden clues as what you might find in the direction you choose to travel. Everything you do including traveling to different areas will require to use cards from an action deck that all players share, the number of cards you draw is limited by what you are doing as well as how many you wish to draw to have a chance of succeeding. You don't necessarily want to draw the max amount though because your action deck is also you life and the only way to replenish it is by resting or eating. Resting won't give you a lot of cards back but eating will, however you have to find food to eat. There is a lot going on in this game for example you will gather items and if you have the right knowledge you can attempt to combine them together to make tools that will give you advantages. The board is huge and made out of hundreds of cards but you won't need them all on the table the whole time. With the large board, the items you carry, your action deck, etc. you may wonder how you will be able to play for 30+ hours without having to keep the game set up on the table. The answer to this is the 'save' feature I mentioned above. The designers have incorporated a clever and unique system of storing the cards that will allow you to save the state of the game as you pack it away. You can read about this system as well as a ton of information about the game itself in a series of articles on BGG starting with the first article here and if you are at all interested in the game I would highly recommend checking it out. The 7th Continent is designed by Ludovic Roudy and Bruno Sautter with art done by Ludovic. It is very ambitious to say the least but from the information I've read about it so far it seems like it will likely succeed at what it's trying to do. It will be on Kickstarter soon with three expansion right from the start, mostly to lower the cost for those not wanting to pay for all the extra cards.
