September 16, 2015 - 10:55pm
The cat is out of the bag, Fantasy Flight Games (FFG) will be acquiring the game Legend of the Five Rings from the Alderac Entertainment Group (AEG). Legend of the Five Rings has been a long running CCG style game as well as an RPG game that has been very successful under the control of AEG. As time has gone on, AEG has made a name for itself with it's board games along with the L5R property, but now they want to move on from L5R and focus more on other flagship products, but they didn't want L5R to fade away so a deal with FFG was born. AEG will release one more CCG set for the game but then the game will transition to FFG's control and, with a debut at GenCon 2017, be transformed into a Living Card Game. More information will surface as the deal is finalized and we inch closer to the debut in 2017, until then you can read the full press release below. Fantasy Flight Games to Acquire Legend of the Five Rings Ontario, California; Roseville, Minnesota – September 11th, 2015. Alderac Entertainment Group (AEG) and Fantasy Flight Games have entered into an agreement by which Fantasy Flight Games will purchase the Legend of the Five Rings intellectual property from AEG. For the past two decades, Legend of the Five Rings has been a hobby games mainstay as a collectible card game (CCG) and roleplaying game. AEG will be releasing the final set of the CCG later this year, closing this chapter of the game. Fantasy Flight Games anticipates its first Legend of the Five Rings product to be a relaunch of the card game as a Living Card Game (LCG) with a debut event at Gen Con 2017. More details will become available once the deal has closed. “The prospect of working on Legend of the Five Rings is very exciting for us,” said Steve Horvath, SVP of Communications at Fantasy Flight Games. “The AEG team has done an amazing job creating a truly rich history and a universe with a deep narrative that fans have connected with for twenty years, and we are looking forward to the potential to build on that legacy moving forward.” John Zinser, CEO of Alderac Entertainment Group said, “L5R is and will always be our first gaming love, but over time, we've changed our company focus further and further away from those roots. Our friends at Fantasy Flight Games have staff with a long history with the L5R property and its games, who are excited about the prospect of taking the brand into the future. When we recently decided it was time to end our own work on the story of Rokugan, we knew they were the best possible stewards for the world, the story, and the community we love and want to see continue to succeed and grow into its next twenty years.” About Fantasy Flight Games Fantasy Flight Games is a leading publisher of board games including XCOM: The Board Game and Twilight Imperium, Living Card Games such as Android: Netrunner and Warhammer 40,000: Conquest, and miniatures games like Star Wars®: X-WingTM and Imperial Assault.
