In a recent article written by game designer Gil Hova (Battle Merchants, Prolix), Hova breaks down and classifies recreational games into three categories in ‘
A simple taxonomy for recreational games.’
The three types of categories Hova identifies are contests, puzzles, and worlds. Hova states that the focus is “
on games that are commercially available for recreational purposes: mainly tabletop games and video games. These are the games I’m most interested in playing and designing.”
