Zman Games posted some more information on their upcoming video game turned board game, The Battle at Kemble's Cascade. The game is expected to release third quarter of this year.
From their Facebook post:
In The Battle at Kemble’s Cascade, there are important and innovative aspects that make the game completely unique. Transferring the mechanics of an arcade game over to a board game wasn't easy, but somehow Anders & Olle Tyrland made it work wonderfully.
Designers Anders & Olle Tyrland, explain what aspects were integrate to make this game look and feel like a classic arcade shmup!
TRUE VERTICAL SCROLLER We have seen people in the past trying to tackle the vertical/horizontal scroller adaptation to a board game and most, if not all, have over-abstracted it. We have tried to keep it as close to the original arcade-style game as possible so all players move around freely, in all 8 directions, on the board. All enemies are have specific places on the board and you have to navigate your space ship to face that enemy in order to shoot it, like you would have to do in an arcade game. Also, you might want to stay away from parts of the scrolling board at different parts of the game if you want to stay alive – but that’s just a friendly hint! THE RELATION BETWEEN THE NAME AND IRL It’s really cool that Z-Man decided to keep the name “Kemble’s Cascade”. If you google/wikipedia the name and read about it you’ll see that it actually is a real life asterism; one that can be seen with normal binoculars. So Kemble’s Cascade is not just some made up reference to a world that doesn’t exist. Kemble’s Cascade is described as "a beautiful cascade of faint stars tumbling from the northwest down to the open cluster NGC 1502". Maybe after a few games, you can gaze up at the stars and look for Kemble’s Cascade…hopefully, no space ships will be raging battle there at the time!
