Mysthea by Tabula Games on Kickstarter

March 7, 2018 - 11:37pm

Mysthea, by Tabula Games, is a Kickstarter exclusive board game for 2-4 players, aged 14+. It uses a mixture of hand management and area control and features asymmetric gameplay, a variable scoring system, and player customization. Mysthea is designed by Martino Chiacchiera (know for his Deckscape games) and Marta Ciaccasassi with art by Travis Anderson. Play time is roughly 90-120 mins

"Millenia ago, a planet called Icaion was hit by a giant crystal of unknown origins from the depths of space. With staggering force, the crystal pierced through the celestial body. The impact was so strong that the planet, and the forces governing it, changed forever.

Fast forward thousands of years. A region made of the chunks of land that broke off from Icaion due to the force of impact is now inhabited by a prosperous society. The lands floating above the clouds were named Mysthea by their inhabitants." [source]

The king of Mysthea has delegated the kingdom's management to guilds which have found a way to empower their champions using the crystals called Quom. The guilds are able to send these champions into unexplored territories with their newfound abilities of which each champion has mastered a unique ability. During the long years since the collision new life has also spawned on the planet which can be manipulated using the Quom. The game features a dynamic map which constantly changes based on player choices. The shifts in the map leads to interesting choices in the area control aspect of the game. Players start with a small hand of cards and can acquire new ones from a common display during their turn to increase options and strategies. Each card is unique and can be used in different ways so hand management is important. There are some amazing miniatures and beautiful artwork which makes for a very stunning presentation. Mysthea is currently on Kickstarter and the core game (including art book and stretch goals) can be backed for a pledge of 85 Euros (excluding shipping). The project ends on Thursday, March 29th 2018 but the 1248 backers have already helped reach the goal by 200%.
