What happens when you take a game like
Carcassonne and add in a dungeon crawl type mechanic? I think you would get a game like
Delve. In
Delve you are a band of dungeon explorers who have been drawn to Skull Cavern based on the rumors of the treasure it holds. You will have to lead your band of delvers into the dungeon, fighting off the other players, as well as monsters, as you try to grab the most loot.
Gameplay works at first like
Carcassonne, where you take the dungeon tile you have and place it out to expand the dungeon, making sure to respect similar placement rules. Then you can place one of your delvers in one of the rooms face down, with each faction have different delvers with different combat abilities. Play will continue like this around to the other players until a room is completed, then everyone in that room will battle it out for control. Everyone reveals their delvers and then rolls the combined battle dice shown for their team, trying to defeat all the other teams involved. If you win you get the majority of gold in the room and any treasure, lose and you will get much less or nothing at all. There are also encounter cards that you will face if you ever complete a room by yourself, making you face off against the dungeon before you can collect your spoils. As you lay tiles a sun marker will move along a track, once it reaches the end the game is over and the richest faction is the winner.
Delve has a healthy dose of luck so keep that in mind, but if you are intrigued by the concept and can handle some luck in your battles, this game is just right for you. You can head over to the
campaign page to pledge for a copy of the game, or a copy of the game and an expansion with more encounter and treasure cards.
