Winter Kingdom, sequel to Kingdom Builder on KS from Queen Games
Kingdom Builder (2011), by Dominion designer Donald X. Vaccarino, was not only the 2012 Spiel des Jahres winner, but remains a favorite modern classic board game, inspiring numerous expansions. Players take turns placing settlements on their board, respecting the different terrain types. In Kingdom Builder, turn by turn players must place 3 settlements on the terrain type of their current terrain card, next to existing settlements if at all possible. Once all the settlements are placed, Kingdom Builder cards define scoring rules for the current game.
Now the team of Donald Vaccarino and Queen Games have announced a standalone sequel, Winter Kingdom. Winter Kingdom uses the familiar rules of the original but adds a new modular hexagonal board for more replayability. New features and mechanisms include coins, earned by economy cards, and spent to give new asymmetric abilities. Additionally, twist cards add new rules to each game. Winter Kingdom comes with 7 double sided terrain boards, 30 terrain cards, 25 ability cards, 18 winter kingdom cards, 8 economy and twist cards, tunnels, coins, markers, houses forts and a scoreboard. The Kickstarter Campaign for Winter Kingdom continues through April 9, and the game is expected to be available in October 2020.
