Upper Deck wants you to take the red pill in Legendary Encounters: The Matrix Deck Building Game
When Upper Deck released Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game in 2012, it was billed as a semi-cooperative game where players would work together to beat the evil Mastermind. However, each player would also keep track of the villains they defeated because each villain was worth a certain amount of victory points at the end of the game and the player with the most victory points was the “actual winner”.
Two years later, Upper Deck released the first fully cooperative “Legendary” game with Legendary Encounters: An Alien Deck Building Game. In this version of Legendary, players worked together to resolve a set of inter-connected set of scenarios, each of which had its own creatures to fight. It introduced new mechanics that helped the players work together while simultaneously making the game more difficult by having enemies come into play hidden.
At GenCon 2022, Upper Deck announced the next game in their “Legendary Encounters” line of games, Legendary Encounters: The Matrix Deck Building Game.
