Spiel des Jahres nominations for 2022 announced
The powers that be in deepest Germany have announced the nominees for the most prestigious of board game awards, the Spiel des Jahres. Given since 1979, the Spiel is awarded to the best family-level games available in Germany for that year. The associated Kennerspiel award, first awarded in 2011, is generally given to more complex titles, and the Kinderspiel to the best children’s games. In a live stream overnight (actually a very reasonable hour in Germany) the new nominees for 2022 were lauded:
- The Kinderspiel nominees went to: Mit Quacks & Co. nach Quedlinburg by Wolfgang Warsch and Schmidt Spiele. Auch Schon Clever, also by Wolfgang Warsch and Schmidt Spiele. And Zauberberg, aka Magic Mountain, by designers Jens-Peter Schliemann and Bernhard Weber, published by Amigo.
- For Kennerspiel des Jahres: Cryptid by designers Hal Duncan and Ruth Veevers, published by Osprey Games. Living Forest by Aske Christiansen and Ludonaute. And Dune: Imperium by designer Paul Dennen and Dire Wolf Digital.
- For the Spiel des Jahres, the nominees are: Scout! from Kei Kajino (梶野 桂) through publishers One More Game! and Oink Games. Cascadia by Randy Flynn and Flatout Games. And Top Ten by Aurélien Picolet and Cocktail Games.
An interesting fact from this year’s nominees: This will be the fifth and sixth nominees for Wolfgang Warsch, and the second time the designer had two nominees in the same category. Warsch was nominated for both Quacks of Quedlinburg and Ganz Schön Clever in the Kennerspiel category in 2018 (Quacks won). And now, the children's versions of both of these titles are up for the Kinderspiel.
