Space piracy in Tortuga 2199 on Kickstarter

January 29, 2020 - 8:28pm

Become the most powerful and influential space pirate on the lucrative, but dangerous, planet Tortuga in Grey Fox Games’ current project seeking funding on Kickstarter. Tortuga 2199, designed by Michael Loyko, and Denis Plastinin (known for the recent War of the Worlds: The New Wave game), along with art by Andrew Mironov, sees 2-4 players compete to unite powerful clans and sectors under their control, while upgrading ships and crew, battling space beasts, and each other for glory. It’s a deck building, exploration and area control game which is aimed at players aged 12+ and plays in 60-90 minutes.

During the game, players take turns playing cards from their hands and performing actions such as:

  • moving a ship
  • exploring hunted creatures
  • reserving a card from their hand
  • destroying played cards
  • capturing hunted creatures
  • redeeming hunted creatures
  • collecting minerals
  • conquering a sector
  • reinforcing a sector
  • attacking an enemy ship

There are more than 50 unique cards (including crew, mercenaries, equipment, and monsters), and 4 asymmetrical spaceships (with miniatures) each with different tactics and strategies. The Kickstarter campaign also includes the “Shipwreck Bay” expansion at the base pledge level, which includes a 5th player, more sector tiles, cards, markers, tokens, and a new spaceship miniature.

The Kickstarter campaign for Tortuga 2199 has already hit 2x it’s funding goal with over 1,300 backers and is set to run until February 13th, 2020. Expected project delivery is in August of 2020.
