Geocaching to save Azeroth!
Z-Man Games is partnering with Geocaching for a promotional campaign for their new board game release, World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King. This game is a Pandemic system game, set in the World of Warcraft setting, with heroes coming together to thwart the Lich King.
What is Geocaching? It is a large-scale outdoor scavenger hunt. Small caches are hidden all over the world and their GPS coordinates are logged at Geocaching.com, which also has a mobile app. You participate by finding these caches through the use of a dedicated GPS device or your smartphone. Once you find a cache, you can log that you have found it. Most caches are containers that hold small trinkets. Some of these trinkets are trackables, which are identified items that have their locations logged as they move from cache to cache.
Z-Man has created 4,200 trackables for this campaign, each one featuring a playable hero from the boardgame: Jaina Proudmoore, Lady Liadrin, Muradin Bronzebeard, Tirion Fordring, Sylvanas Windrunner, Thrall, and Varian Wrynn. You can request one of these trackables be sent to you up until September 22nd through the Geocaching promotion site. The goal of the campaign is to have these trackables reach mileage traveled thresholds as they move from cache to cache. There are four mileage goal thresholds, and as they are reached they will unlock print and play content for the World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King board game. The Geocaching promotion site will maintain location information for the trackables, so you can search for one near you.
This is a fun promotion, encouraging players to explore the outdoors. Let's just hope these trackables move from cache to cache and do not end up on ebay! World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King is designed by Justin Kemppainen, Alexandar Ortloff, and Michael Sanfilippo. It features art by Atha Kanaani.
