“Astronauts wanted! Scientists say there is a mysterious ninth planet located at the edge of our solar system. But despite all of their efforts, so far they have been unable to provide substantial evidence of its existence. Join this exciting space adventure to find out if the theories are just science fiction or if you will discover Planet Nine.”

One of the sleeper hits of Essen this past October was a small cooperative trick-taking card game, Die Crew: Reist gemeinsam zum 9. Planeten, by KOSMOS and designer Thomas Sing, otherwise known as "The Crew". Publishers, designers, and attendees were all talking about this simple take on trick taking, and it quickly became the must-have game of the convention. And now KOSMOS has announced an English version is coming to the west in the second quarter of 2020.

In The Crew, 3-5 players play a fairly standard trick-taking game. The deck is comprised of 4 suits, each containing cards numbered 1-9, and an additional 4 trump cards numbered 1-4. The player holding the 4 trump leads the trick, and all players must follow suit. If they are unable, they can throw any card they wish. The highest card of the lead suit wins the trick, excepting trump, which wins everything. The winner of the trick leads the next trick. The “trick” to this game is the cooperative nature; players must complete 50 detailed missions, presented in story-like fashion in a sci-fi theme. Missions usually involve a player needing to take a specific card, such as a blue 3, and all players need to work together to make sure this happens. There is very limited communication between the players: Once per game a player may show a single card to the group, specifying that it is a) their only card of the suit, b) their highest, or c) their lowest. Other than this, players must remain mute about their hand, much like partners in a traditional game of hearts or bridge. The missions get progressively harder, adding unique twists, such as “No one can win with a 9”, or “Someone must win a trick with a 1”.

Fans of classic trick taking games, especially partner games, should look forward to The Crew: The Quest for Planet 9, in stores this spring.
