Control a lake in Winter by Devir

September 12, 2022 - 7:22pm

Winter is a 2-player, abstract game published by Devir, and was the winner of the 2021 Cardboard Edison Award. The game was originally published in 2016 but now has a new edition with revised mechanisms. It is suitable for players aged 8+ and lasts about 10 minutes. The theme revolves around players freezing  then unfreezing a lake, while choosing key spaces to control ahead of their rival. Winter is designed by siblings Maria Blasco Arnandis and Enrique Blasco. The game features artwork by Meeple Foundry and Carlos Ureta.

Two players compete to have the most chips of their color on the lake at the end of the game. In the first (freezing) phase of the game players create the frozen lake using their snowflake cards and attempt to secure zones where they’ve grouped four snowflakes of their color using chips. In the second (unfreezing) phase players undo their creation by moving and retrieving cards and chips of their color. The player with the most chips on the table at the end of the game wins.

Expect Winter to release sometime later this year. This is the first of the 4 Seasons series that will continue later with Autumn, Summer, and Spring.
