Ashes: Rise of the Phoenixborn is rising from the ashes
Ashes: Rise of the Phoenixborn is living up to its name. Fifteen months after publisher Plaid Hat Games announced the end of Ashes, the game is coming back with a version 1.5 upgrade kit followed by planned expansions. The upgrade kit, dubbed Ashes: Reborn, is being produced through a partnership between Plaid Hat Games and Team Covenant. Team Covenant is using a player driven production model, somewhat similar to GMT's P500, where the physical printing of the new content will occur once a threshold of consumers have signed up to purchase it. In the case of Ashes: Reborn, that threshold is 1,000 subscribers. After the initial upgrade kit, the subscription will deliver new Ashes content every quarter, as long as subscriber levels justify production.
Ashes: Reborn includes an updated rulebook and revised versions of approximately 30% of previously released Ashes cards. For more details about the original life cycle of Ashes, as well as its resurrection, check out the Team Covenant announcement video.
Ashes: Rise of the Phoenixborn is a two-player expandable card game utilizing custom dice. The game is designed by Isaac Vega. Nick Conly, who was a lead playtester for the original release is lead developer on the upgrade kit.
The Team Covenant subscription is only available to customers in the U.S. and Canada. Everyone else will have access to the new content through retail channels. The re-emergence of Ashes may have been influenced by Plaid Hat Games leaving the Asmodee umbrella in February 2020 and being re-aquired by founder Colby Dauch.
