Heaven and Ale from Michael Kiesling and Andreas Schmidt is a new 2-4 player game which takes place in a monastery, pitting players in fierce competition to see who can brew the best beer. Players need to keep their cloister garden fertile and well manned, in order to collect enough resources to fill their barrels.

Michael Kiesling has also teamed up with his long time partner Wolfgang Kramer to bring Reworld, a card and tile game set in a terraforming future. 2-4 Players claim tiles from the board, and the values of neighboring claimed tiles allow the play of specific numbered cards from their hand. Players score fir picking up terrabots, developing their cities, deploying satellites, and for meeting goals set at the start of the game. Rounds end once all players have emptied their hands of cards, and a game lasts five rounds.

Look for both these games from Eggertspiele in October 2017.

HABA Games continues to move further into the family game market, this time with an expansion to the 2015 game Adventure Land. The expansion has players returning to the land of King Agamis with Adventure Land: King and Princess:

King Agamis and the inhabitants of the land are in an uproar as the fog creatures have kidnapped the princess! She is being held somewhere in Adventure Land and is being closely guarded by the powerful giant. Who will be the first to collect all the keys, find out where the princess is being held, and then have enough combat strength to defeat the terrifying giant?

Three new challenges will await adventurers, adding to the original three included in the base game. Players will now be able to tackle the following adventures:

  • “Kidnap of the princess”
  • “Uprising of the Fog Creatures”
  • “Rescuing the King.”

In the original Adventure Land game players moved their adventurers tactically to collect resources, gather treasure and bravely fight fog creatures to win the favor of the king. Now characters will use those same mechanics to kelp King Agamis rescue his daughter.

The expansion has been created by award winning game designers Wolfgang Kramer and Michael Riesling who were the designers of the original Adventure Land game.

Traditionally known for wooden baby and children’s toys as well as children’s games, in 2015 Haba Games released a trio of family weight games; Spookies, Karuba and Adventure Land. Karuba was subsequently nominated for a 2016 Spiel des Jahres award.

Stronghold Games is continuing their Great Designers line of games, the first two having been Porta Nigra by Wolfgang Kramer and Michael Kiesling and 504 by Friedemann Friese.  Now Stronghold has announced the next three games in line, Kraftwagon-V6 Edition, The Fog of War, and Jorvik, along with the next game by the Engelsteins, The Dragon and Flagon.

Kraftwagon-V6 Edition is designed by Matthias Cramer and will feature all the same gameplay and mechanics as the original Kraftwagon game, the major difference is that an additional set of tiles has been added to the game in order to utilize V6 engines that were available at the time the game is based in.  This edition will be available in August of 2016.

Next is The Fog of War, designed by Geoff Engelstein, this is a two player strategy game covering the European theater of World War 2 from 1940 to 1945.  The game will focus less on the battling and more on the intelligence and planning aspects of the war, in the game you have to commit to your operations in advance using a unique mechanic called the “Operation Wheel”, but what you commit is secret so you can bluff your opponent.  This will be Geoff’s first solo design game so look forward to it in September 2016.

Game number five in the series will be JORVIK, designed by Stefan Feld, and although was previously announced by Stronghold, it has been now officially been added to the Great Designers series.  Jorvik, the modern city of York, was a major hub of trade and commerce in the viking era, and so in the game JORVIK you are Viking jarls trying to make your clan the most prestigious.  How you do this is through funding pillaging runs, defending the city, hosting lavish feasts, trading goods, and hiring craftsman.  Look for this game to arrive on shelves in October of 2016.

And last but not least, while not a part of the Great Designers series of games it shouldn’t be taken lightly as it is a Engelstein family creation, The Dragon and Flagon.  This is a game of chaos where up to 8 people are trying to get the last flagon of the famous brew, The Dragon, and so will do anything to get it.  You will be rolling barrels, swinging from chandeliers, pulling rugs out from under people, and all sorts of other craziness to try and be the one to grab that brew.  Another aspect that is unique is that the board will be a 3D representation of the tavern so it can be set up differently each time, making the game even more interesting.  Look for this game August of 2016.

Stronghold Games Announces Titles from Designers Matthias Cramer and Geoff Engelstein

Kraftwagen – V6 Edition, designed by Matthias Cramer, is a 2-4 player game exploring the dawn of the automotive industry in the early 20th century. Players advance the state of automobile development and production by playing as start-up companies, researching new technologies and building improved chassis and engines. Early Grand Prix races provide the young companies with prestige and money, but the players must maintain a key balance of fulfilling the demand preferences of buyers at the lowest possible price. In Kraftwagen – V6 Edition, a new set of tiles has been added, which feature the next technology available at the time, the V6 engine. Kraftwagen – V6 Edition has been designated the third game in The Great Designer Series from Stronghold Games. Street Date: August 2016. MSRP: $59.95.

The Fog Of War, designed by Geoff Engelstein, is a two player grand strategic game covering the European theater of World War II from 1940-1945. The game focuses on the planning and intelligence aspects of the war. Players create military operations utilizing the “Operation Wheel”, which is a unique mechanism that forces players to commit to operations in advance, while giving opportunities for bluffing as well as intelligence gathering by the enemy. Each turn the dial on the Operation Wheel is rotated by one position, which controls when an operation can be launched and any attack or defense bonuses that apply. The Fog Of War is Stronghold Games’ first war game. It is also Geoff Engelstein’s first solo game design after a string of co-designed games. The Dragon & Flagon, designed by Brian, Sydney, and Geoff Engelstein, is a game of chaos and mayhem for 2-8 players. The Dragon & Flagon is a tavern world-renowned for its most magical drink, The Dragon. Legend has it that one sip of The Dragon can give a hero wondrous abilities beyond their wildest dreams — but with a tavern full of thirsty adventurers and only one flagon left, things are bound to go wrong. Players take on roles of a very diverse group of adventurers who throw mugs, roll barrels, smash chairs, cast spells, wield weapons, swing from the chandelier, and pull the rug out from under fellow adventurers as they attempt to gain the greatest reputation in the land. The game features multiple play modes and a 3D tavern environment, which can be set up differently every time for even more variety of play. Street date: August 2016. MSRP: $59.95.

JÓRVÍK, designed by Stefan Feld, was announced in a previous Press Release (see “Stronghold Games and eggertspiele Announce Strategic Partnership”, February 13, 2016). JÓRVÍK has now been designated the fifth game in The Great Designer Series from Stronghold Games. Street Date: October 2016. Stronghold Games Announces Porta Nigra designed by Wolfgang Kramer & Michael Kiesling
Porta Nigra designated by Stronghold Games as Game #1 in its “Great Designer Series”

New Jersey, USA – June 3, 2015

Stronghold Games is proud to announce the publication of Porta Nigra, a game designed by the renowned
game design team of Wolfgang Kramer and Michael Kiesling, and co-published with Eggert-spiele.
Porta Nigra (or black gate) is a large Roman city gate, located in Trier, Germany, and dating back to the 2nd century. The game is set in that place and time with the players taking on the roles of Roman architects working on the city gate of Porta Nigra.

In Porta Nigra, 2 to 4 players each command a master builder, who moves around a circular track on the
game board, enabling players to buy or build only where this master builder is located. Moving the master builder to farther locations along the track is expensive, so players must plan their movements and builds carefully. The number and type of actions that players may perform on their turn is determined from cards that each player has in their personal draw deck.

The buildings in Porta Nigra are erected physically on the game board at the various locations in the city. This is accomplished with 3-D plastic building pieces, which gives Porta Nigra a beautiful and compelling look on the table.

Stronghold Games will release Porta Nigra as the first game in its new “Great Designer Series”, which will highlight games from the best game designers in the world. Porta Nigra is designed by the renowned game design team of Wolfgang Kramer and Michael Kiesling. Kramer and Kiesling have previously teamed to
design the highly rated games Tikal, Torres, Maharaja, Coal Baron, Palaces of Cararra, and many others.

Rio Grand products continue to be seen throughout television.  On May4, in “Signaling Risk” (season 1, episode 6) of the new HBO comedy, Silicon Valley, character Erlich (played by T.J. Miller) carries Arctic Scavengers through the house and places it upright on a top shelf.  The founder of Rio Grande Games stated, “Rio Grande Games is responsible. We have hired a firm that specializes in product placement on TV shows. This is just one of the appearances for Arctic Scavengers.”

Arctic Scavengers is a bluffing card game where each player is a leader of a tribe of survivors. Throughout game play, players bluff and build their tribes and in the end, the largest tribe is the winner. Designed by Robert Gabhart and published in 2009, this is a game for 2 to 5 people and plays in 45 minutes.

On Novemeber 28 2013, Tikal had an appearance on Fox’s hit show, Glee. During the What Does a Fox Say? number at the end of “Puppet Master” (season 5, episode 7) the teen cast sings around a table with Tikal and Rio Grand Games logo prominently in the middle of the screen.  The entire segment is on YouTube but Tikal can be seen starting at 1:10 into the video.  Tikal also made an appearance on CBS’s comedy The Big Bang Theory.  In “Table Polarization” (season 7, episode 16),  Tikal can be seen in the background during a scene in character Wolowitz’s (played by Simon Helberg) home.

Tikal is an area control, action point game of exploration.  Players discover treasures and temples and is the first game in the “Mask Trilogy” named for the cover art.  Designed by Wolfgang Kramer and Michael Kiesling and published in 1999, this is a game for 2 to 4 people and plays in 120 minutes.
