Werewolf

Silver is the first in a series of card games by Ted Alspach (Castles of Mad King Ludwig, Suburbia, and One Night Ultimate Werewolf) that can be played as a stand along game or combined with other games in the Silver series.  Silver will debut at 2019 Gen Con and hit stores in September.  Silver Bullet will follow in time for Essen Spiel.

Silver is a werewolf themed card game where each player manages a village made up of five villagers beset by werewolves.  Each card shows a resident, their unique ability, and a number – which is how many werewolves that resident attracts.  However, villager cards are dealt to each player face down and the players do not know how bad the werewolf threat is to their village.   The game begins with everyone peeking at two of their five cards. On each turn a player chooses a villager to replace or activates a villager’s ability. There are fourteen special abilities which allow players to view more face down cards, trade with neighboring villages, protect cards, and more.  Once a player is convinced his or her village is the safest from werewolves (has the lowest sum of villager cards), that player can call for a vote. If correct, the winning player scores zero for the round.  If not, the player receives points equal to the sum of the villager cards plus ten!  All other players will receive the sum of their village points, and the player with the lowest score earns a silver medallion which grants the village some protection in the next round. After four rounds, the player with the lowest score wins.

Silver Bullet is similar to Silver and features fourteen brand new residents and special abilities. It can be played as a stand-alone game, or it can be combined with Silver by swapping villagers with the same card value from one deck to another, creating a whole new experience with the game.  Silver Bullet also comes with a silver bullet which allows a player to take aim at any villager after nightfall.

Future games in the Silver series will offer more residents, more special abilities, additional silver tokens to grant the winner a unique power during a round, and endless combinations for the series.

There’s a new Vampire: The Masquerade board game that will seek crowdfunding in June and it’s literally too big not to share. That’s because it’s a MegaGame – an appropriate name for such a large-scale thing, typically involving more than ten people split into teams around multiple tables or rooms. Publisher Everything Epic and designer Ben Kanelos want to bring that kind of experience to board gaming for ease of approach and faster play. Vampire: The Masquerade – Blood Feud, coming to Kickstarter, will allow 4 to 32 people to play as vampires or humans within teams, each with different abilities and group-dependent goals involving politics, diplomacy, trade, and combat across a big city map.

“Blood Feud uses a large room or two separate rooms with 2-4 tables. One game table features the Cityscape and Orders, the map where players move their forces around the city and order them to fight and take control of important territories. The other game table features the Council and Market where players use their best diplomatic and resource management skills to make sly trades, buy upgrades and player level-ups, as well as make large political decisions that will shape the destinies of teams to determine whether they win or lose!”

Some might read the above two paragraphs and think, “What makes this so different from Werewolf, really?” After all, they’re both occult/horror themed games of intrigue for large groups of people, right? That would be neglecting a huge part of what makes a MegaGame so fun and unique. It’s not just that it’s built for a huge group of people, but that it’s got so many points of interactivity that it feels more akin to live action role-playing with layers of decision-making and sudden consequences for every action and inaction.

This publisher and designer both realize the prohibitive nature of MegaGames (their difficulty in organizing) and what makes them great, so it’s fantastic that they’re bringing this in a more manageable format for our hobby to truly appreciate. Moreover, the history and nature of the Vampire: The Masquerade setting lends itself to negotiation, strong-arming, and role-playing. It’s a perfect theme to use as an entry point for a game this ambitious. While social deduction games have been around for awhile and they often follow a similar formula, every year we tend to see minor twists that shake up the experience to be fresher than before, and it’s quite remarkable that such a long-running genre of games is still evolving. You can see this in Bezier Games line of Werewolf games, from Ultimate Werewolf, to One Night, to the recently announced One Week, just a minor change can make a big difference. This is also the case with Forsaken Forest, now on Kickstarter, which takes a lot of inspiration from Werewolf but adds a secondary objective and action cards which bring more strategy and less bickering to the classic formula. As described via it’s campaign page:

     “Forsaken Forest is a social deduction card game set within a mysterious forest, inexplicably warped by dark magic. In order to win, you must navigate to your team’s veiled Destination before the opposing team navigates to theirs, or eliminate everyone who stands in your way. The first team to either reach their destination, or eliminate enough of the opposing team’s players, wins!”

Now I don’t think that Forsaken Forest is going to unseat any other Werewolf title, but it is a welcome alternative for those that may felt that vanilla Werewolf and subsequent titles were more about arbitrary rambling than fun. What this game offers instead is a simple alternative win-condition – to reach a destination. If you know where it is you need to go, you can theoretically race to that destination, possibly making it before your team is picked off, and win even if you don’t know who else is sharing that victory with you. It means that players have to pay attention to a map and cards played in addition to what’s being said, and while it’s not much of a change it is just enough to be innovative and the board gaming community is better for it. Bézier Games announced a brand new game in their line of social deduction games, One Week Ultimate WerewolfIf The Palace of Mad King Ludwig and One Night Ultimate Werewolf had a crossover then One Week Ultimate Werewolf would be the product of it. In this game you’re in Ludwig Castle where each room provides a special power to help you find the werewolves among you.

“As in One Night Ultimate Werewolf, your goal is to figure out the secret roles of your opponents as well as your own role by the end of the game. Each day you’ll enter a different room with a unique ability, and each night you’ll interact with the other players in that room. In addition to 3–7 players, three staff members roam the castle, and each of them also has a secret role. After a week‘s investigation (which should take about 45 minutes), it all comes down to a vote. If you’re a werewolf, you’re trying to remain undiscovered. If you’re a villager, you’re trying to find those sneaky werewolves. And if you’re a Tanner, well, you’re trying to get caught!”

One Week Ultimate Werewolf will come with more than a dozen unique rooms which provides for a lot of replayability as you generally only use a few in each game. The Kickstarter project will launch 14 May, 2018 and ship in October 2018. Exclusives such as unique items and rooms, and wooden component upgrades, will also be offered as part of the project.

MATTEL DEBUTS NEW ADULT GAME — ESCAPE ROOM IN A BOX. New Game Inspired by Escape Room Experiences Available This Fall (PRNewsfoto/Mattel, Inc.)

Mattel has announced that they will be releasing a board game version of an escape the room adventure, Escape Room in A Box: The Werewolf Experiment.

This was on Kickstarter last year and had initial fulfillment to backer this year in the weeks leading up to Gen Con.

“We are continuing to expand our games business with on-trend and relevant games, and Escape Room in A Box is the latest addition to the growing Mattel Games portfolio,” said Ray Adler, Senior Director, Global Games at Mattel. “We know that in a digitally focused world, consumers are gravitating toward social game play. This new introduction brings friends and families together to re-create the thrill captured in the entertainment experience.”

The Werewolf with give a group of players one hour to solve a series of puzzles, crack some codes and find some hidden clues in time to stop the plot of a mad scientist. As soon as the box has been opened players will have been exposed to a virus that will turn them into werewolves. Players will then have one hours to complete 19 puzzles and find the codes to open the three locks and escape the virus.

Players will be able to connect to the Amazon Alexa to track time, ask questions for clues and play a soundtrack for the game.

Mattel’s escape room in a box will be released in retail in the fall of 2017.

Legacy of Escape Games

Escape Room style games have become extremely popular in recent years. Mattel noted in their press release that 13.4 million people in the US alone participated in escape rooms. Kosmos Exit series of games adaptation of escape rooms for board game players was the winner of the 2017 Kennerspiel des Jahres.

While the One Night series has been going crazy on Kickstarter, Bezier Games hasn’t forgotten about it’s older brother, Ultimate Werewolf.  So to keep the game fresh, Bezier Games has just released a new expansion to the game called Ultimate Werewolf: Hunting Party.  This new expansion pack adds several new roles to increase the chaos and make things even more interesting for your werewolf games.  The new included roles are:

  • The Huntress – a one-shot wonder guaranteed to kill her target
  • The Mad Bomber – takes out the two players closest to him if he’s killed
  • The Revealer – has the ability to kill every single werewolf in just one night…unless he’s wrong about who’s a werewolf, in which case he dies
  • The Mystic Seer – she knows the exact role of her target
  • The Mentalist – knows if any pair of players are on the same team or not
  • The Alpha Wolf – can turn a player into a wolf at night instead of eliminating him

Bezier Games has announced Werewords, a social deduction word guessing game set in the Ultimate Werewolf universe. In Werewords, players try to guess a secret word by asking yes or no questions. If they figure out the word, they win. However, one player is a werewolf, they know the secret word, and will try to mislead you, because if you cannot get the word the werewolf wins. The Werewolf needs to be subtle and sly, because if other players will win if they can identify the Werewolf at the end of the game.

Like in Werewolf, one player is secretly the Seer, and they know the secret word. The Seer can try to steer the group towards the correct answer, but if the Werewolf identifies the Seer at the end, the Werewolf wins! The Mayor is the player answering the groups’ question with a pile of limited tokens – “Yes/No”, “Maybe”, “So Close” and “Correct”. If the Mayor runs out of tokens, the group cannot ask any more questions, and must accuse someone of being a Werewolf. Uniquely, it is totally possible that the Mayor himself is a Werewolf, and is falsely answering the questions! But again, if he is too blatant, the group may suspect and steal victory from his paws. As in Ultimate Werewolf, other roles for larger groups abound, such as the Beholder and the Minion. Werewords comes with a custom app, containing thousands of words, as well as the ability to create their own word lists.

Werewords is due to be released in June, likely at the Origins Game Fair. Werewords can be pre-ordered at Bezier Games.

Iello is really ready for the new year with a handful of new products, so let’s take a quick look at the three upcoming releases scheduled for the first quarter of 2017.

First up is a small addition to the King of Tokyo and King of New York family – the first in a line of Monster Packs that are planned for the popular pair featuring the cult favorite, Cthulhu. These monster packs will come with a standee, player board, and evolution cards for both Tokyo and New York. Cthulhu also comes with several cultist tokens and a double-sided temple presumably used in conjunction with his unique set of evolution cards.

Next is a fast and fun game for 2 to 6 players called The Legend of the Wendigo. Players take the roles of scouts at a campground, who’ve heard a tale of the Wendigo who now lurks among them. It sounds very similar to Werewolf with each player receiving a hidden role token, one of which is the Wendigo who can “steal” (or most likely, eliminate from play) one other scout at night-time. There’s a sand-timer included, and a 10-minute play time on the box which both suggests this plays like a speed version of Werewolf more focus on memory while not trying to be as condensed as the instantly classic One Night series. It’ll be interesting to see what other twists in the rules will separate this game from the rest as we learn more about it.

Last is a new small-box card game that takes us back to the time of Ancient Egypt. Pyramids is about building the eponymous wonders by collecting the best materials and organizing them for points. As described on the product page,

 “Your necropolis, a place of eternal sleep, luxury, and glory, will be made up of Pyramids, Obelisks, and Tombs. Select the best combination of stones in the quarry, optimize their layout, and make your necropolis the most famous in all of Egypt!”

werewolf legacy

That’s right, another legacy game from Rob Daviau, and this time it’s Ultimate Werewolf Legacy, designed together with Ted Alspach.  Werewolf itself has been around since 1986 and has had a number of expansions and re-implementations done along the way.  With artifacts, additional characters, additional werewolves, there is just a lot of content already out for the game, so a legacy version of the game could be interesting.  The legacy game is meant to be played in chapters of three games each, and the decisions of one game will carry over and affect the next.  Along the way characters may earn titles that give them special abilities beyond what their role normally gives them.  Also of note is that the game will allow for changing the moderator, that way you won’t have to be the NPC leader of the group for the entire game.  Look for this game to hit shelves some time in 2017.

one night ultimate alien

Social deduction games have become a staple of many game gatherings, and Bezier Games has been contributing their fair share to the genre.  The One Night Ultimate series of games, including One Night Ultimate Werewolf (which has sold over 100,000 copies) and One Night Ultimate Vampire (earning $378,000 on Kickstarter) have been top sellers worldwide.

Now, Bezier Games would like to announce a new addition to the series in the form of One Night Ultimate Alien, which will offer not only a strong alien vs. villagers theme, but will also introduce the Dynamic Rules system.  The following is an excerpt from the official press release for One Night Ultimate Alien:

In One Night Ultimate Alien, players are assigned a role, perform actions secretly during a “night” phase, and then have just a few minutes to discuss among themselves who the alien invaders are. All players vote, and the role of the player with the most votes is revealed. If it is an Alien, the Villager team wins. If it isn’t, the Alien team wins. The game takes less than 10 minutes to play, but is so addicting players may find themselves playing game after game for hours on end.

While previous One Night games took advantage of the free One Night app to guide players through night time actions, Alien relies on the app to ensure that each game has a unique set of rules for each role. These Dynamic Rules have never been used in a traditional board game before, and they breathe a gust of fresh air into the social deduction genre.
