Valeria

Villages of Valeria is a fast,  fun action-selection tableau building game which released last year to praise for it’s solid mechanics and family-friendly depth. Nobody would fault you for confusing this game with Valeria: Card Kingdoms, given they inhabit the same fantasy universe, but they are totally different, easy-to-learn and solid titles in their own rights. Villages of Valeria uses the leader/follower action mechanism made popular by games such as Puerto Rico, San Juan, and Race for the Galaxy, yet it did a good job of filling a niche as a gateway game to those giants. Now it’s first expansion, Landmarks, is up for funding on Kickstarter and it seeks to twist that mechanism enough to make the game stand-out from the crowd. As described on the campaign page:

“With Landmarks, if you cannot or choose not to follow the lead action, you can build a landmark as your follow action. Landmark tokens do not count as Buildings, but at the end of the game, the player with the most of each type of Landmark will earn victory points! Increase your Landmark holdings, leverage the new Buildings, attract the new Adventurers, and show your rivals what a proper village looks like!”

Now instead of being seated with the decision of taking a worse action by following another player’s lead or doing nothing, you can discard cards for points! Huzzah! The landmarks, along with the new buildings and adventurers which interact with them, will broaden strategies and make choices crunchier, much to players delight. In addition to the expansion, the Kickstarter also allows for newcomers to buy the base game and a nice new box to put everything in. The battle of Valeria is about to get a little bigger with the Agents mini-expansion for the Valeria Card Kingdoms game. Set for release in late December 2017, this 15 card expansion introduces agents that allow you to hire townsfolk to do your bidding.

Players will shuffle the agent cards and then place them above the left-most monster stack. One agent card will then be dealt face-up above each of the four monster stacks. As an action players can hire one of the face up agents to take advantage of the power displayed. Once the action has been completed the agent gets placed face down at the bottom of the agent deck and the empty space is refilled.

The third expansion deck, this follows previous expansions King’s Guard and Undead Samurai.

Valeria Card Kingdoms

Valeria Card Kingdoms is a tableau-building game for 1-5 players focussed on a deck building mechanic. Cards bought will go to work for both the player on their turn as well as on other player’s turns.

On a players turn they will roll two dice to activate citizen cards with both the results of each individual dice as well as the sum of both dice. Other players will also activate their cards based on having cards matching the rolled dice. After activating their cards players can take two actions including slay a monster, recruit a citizen, buy a domain, or take 1 resource. Whichever player has the most victory points at the end of the game is the winner.

A unique tableau-building game where players hire adventurers from a tavern to complete epic quests and gain glory for their guild!

Daily Magic Games has announced the successful funding of their new set-collection game, Quests of Valeria, in which players play the role of a Guild Master, recruiting Citizens to fulfill the requirements to complete quests for Victory Points.

Quests of Valeria is a stand alone game set in the world of Valeria and takes place just after Valeria: Card Kingdoms. Amid the onslaught of monsters and petty squabbles of the Dukes and Duchesses, the Guild Masters of New Shilina work behind the scenes to make sure the Kingdom prospers. As one of the famous Guild Masters of Valeria, you conduct most of your business in the glorious Gutrot Tavern located in the heart of New Shilina. It’s not enough to hire the best citizens to send on quests – you must also leverage their skills to gain the upper hand.
Outwit your fellow Guild Masters by creating a cascade of fruitful actions to bring prestige to your guild and win the admiration of the King and the citizens of Valeria!

A copy of the game includes:

  • 84 Citizen Cards
  • 32 Quest Cards
  • 6 Guild Master Cards
  • 5 Player Reference Cards
  • 7 Card Cost Tokens
  • 1 First Player Token
  • 2 Action Tokens
  • 1 Rulebook
  • 1 Beautifully Illustrated Box
