In a game of Hats 2-4 players compete to have the highest score by having the most outstanding hats and being declared the maddest. Hats is designed by Gabriele Bubola and illustrated by Paolo Voto.

Each turn a player has a choice of actions to add a face-up hat to their collection in front of them by exchanging a card from their hand with one on the tea board which is either of the same card type or alternatively of a lower number. Otherwise a player can add any card from their hand directly to their collection in front of them by turning it face-down as a black hat. Each black hat is worth one point at the end of the game while all of the face-up hats’ scores are determined in a dynamic manner by which positions the matching hats hold on the tea board at the end of the game.

And there is one final scoring twist at the end of the game. Each player’s last remaining card in their hand determines their favorite type of hat. All of the hats in their collection of this type score the value of those cards minus the value of the final card held in their hand.

Plus there is a chocolate cookie worth 5 points to the owner of the greatest variety of hats!

Stay tuned for future games in the new Made in Wonderland series.

Thundergryph Games and designer Jordy Adan have announced Rolling Ranch, a new Roll and Write game, coming out at Essen Spiel 2018. In Rolling Ranch, a hurricane has hit your ranch, knocking down the fences and releasing all the animals – it is your job to gather up the livestock, put them in pens and rebuild your ranch. The players roll 2 custom dice, each with a variety of symbols on each face, and all players (2-20 of them) use the same pair each turn. Players can couple an animal (pig, cow or chicken) on one die with a pen number on the other to place that animal type in that pen on their score sheet. Alternatively, players can take the summed resources (wood and nails) on both dice, and work towards building structures on their farm, giving extra abilities. Finally, if two hearts show up on the dice, any pairs of animals in a pen breed, adding one more to the pen. At the end of the game, players score points for animals in pens, scoring more if the pen contains only one animal type. Achievement cards distributed at the start of the game add secret goals for each player. For more details, including the full instructions, check out Thundergryph’s excellent webpage on Rolling Ranch here. Rolling Ranch is due for release at Essen, October 25-28.

As board gamers we enjoy the tactile nature of our games in the form of wood, paper, and cardboard. Trees are the source of these components and the planet is quickly running out of them. Thundergryph Games are teaming up with Trees for the Future to support their initiative to plant more trees in the world. With an initial donation of 10,000 trees, Thundergryph Games will also plant a tree for every game sold in 2018.

Gonzalo Aguirre Bisi, president of ThunderGryph Games states:

“We truly believe Nature is the most breathtaking manifestation of art and we want 2018 to be a year to celebrate this wild and incredible thing. Working with wood is one of the most satisfying experiences of creating a game and by planting a tree per game sold, we will ensure to give back to Nature more than what we take to shape our dreams.”

John Leary, Executive Director, Trees for the Future states:

“Trees for the Future is thrilled to partner with ThunderGryph Games to plant a tree for every game sold starting in 2018. We applaud Gonzalo Aguirre Bisi, President of ThunderGryph Games, for his commitment to give back to the planet through our mission: to end hunger and poverty by ending the root causes of deforestation. We wish ThunderGryph Games great success in their upcoming launch and look forward to planting trees and changing lives together!”

Thundergryph Games plans to release 3 games with strong nature based themes:

  • Spirits of the Forest: Players represent the four elements that nourish the forces of nature. Spirits are collected which score Nature points for each Spirit they have a majority of.
  • Tang Garden: Players shape a Classical Chinese Garden with an ever-changing panorama of Nature.
  • Etherstone: On a planet that is near extinction, the Hurrians want to protect the legacy of Nature against humankind who keep pushing technological progress by depleting Nature.

Trees for the Future will not only plant trees, but will help lives while doing so. You can also directly support the cause by donating, or plant 50 trees by purchasing the book One Shot: Trees as Our Last Chance for Survival, by John Leary. Following in the steps of Asmodee, Passport Games along with GTS Distribution have announced an exclusive deal to only distribute Passport Games product through GTS.  This means that anything released by Passport Games Studio, Funforge, Splotter, Granna, Rule & Make, and ThunderGryph will now exclusively be supplied by GTS.  The step was taken in an effort to better control the value of the product from publisher to retailer and to better support retailers, and hopefully it will be able to do just that.  But since GTS is one of the largest distribution companies in the US, I don’t think anyone will have to worry about games disappearing from shelves.  You can read more about the deal in the press release below.

 PRESS RELEASE:
After studying several changes in the North American marketplace in recent months, we are pleased to announce that Passport Game Studio products will be sold exclusively by GTS Distribution.  We are confident that through tighter management of the distribution model, we can preserve the value of our products at the retail level for years to come.  This arrangement is the best strategy for long term success for us and our retail partners as it ensures the highest possible value of products we represent in the marketplace, while delivering the best level of support throughout the entire inventory, marketing, and sales process.
Key changes for core hobby retail:
  • Passport Game Studios will remain as a GTS brand, focused on bringing their partner studios’ games to the North American market.
  • The GTS Distribution sales and marketing teams will handle all communications and services to hobby retailers for Passport-branded products moving forward.
  • Passport titles in the U.S. are now exclusive to GTS Distribution, and will continue its international partnerships moving forward.

ThunderGryph Games has announced a new partnership with Passport Game Studios for distribution of the Spanish game house’s recent releases. ThunderGryph made quite a splash recently with their Kickstarter games Tao Long, an asian-themed abstract game, and Dead Man’s Doubloons, a treasure seeking pirate game with fantastic components. The trick taking game Pot de Vin, a re-imagining of Sapotagem (2015) will join these two to be the first 3 games covered by the recent agreement. You can read the full press release from Passport here.

Thundergryph Games announced a new pirate themed game Dead Man’s Doubloons by Geek Fever Games. In Dead Man’s Doubloons, 2-5 players take control of a legendary pirate, sailing through the reefs surrounding a mysterious island looking for gold, gems and pieces of treasure maps. Once the player finds the buried treasure and returns it to their ship, the players engage in a final epic battle. Unlike other games, when a player has been destroyed in battle, they continue playing as a ghost ship. Ghost players can still win, but it is more difficult since their treasure is now cursed. The game comes with metal coins, tarot sized playing cards, acrylic gems and bag, board game and area tiles, and beautiful plastic ship models, 5 in solid colors and 5 clear for the ghost ships.

Visit Thundergryph’s website to read more about Dead Man’s Doubloons, as well as a chance to win the game.
