The Captain is Dead

Over the next several months, AEG is releasing additional material for their popular games.

First up is World Tour: International Incident, which add four new factions from four corners of the world to Smash Up: Luchadores from Mexico, Musketeers from France, Mounties from Canada, and Sumo Wrestlers from Japan. This expansion kicks off the World Tour 2019, which offers event kits for stores this summer where players can find an exclusive Penguin faction and have a chance to win Smash Up card sleeves.  Look for World Tour: International Incident in stores on 22 March 2019.

Next is Mystic Vale: Harmony, which not only adds new advancements and vales but also powerful leaders and amulets.  Amulets grant you mana tokens new abilities.  When you spoil, your amulet can be “evoked” for its special power.  Look for Mystic Vale: Harmony in stores on 3 May 2019.

Final, the next episode of The Captain is Dead arrives in a stand-alone game: The Captain is Dead: Dangerous Planet.  In The Captain is Dead: Dangerous Planet, the crew has escaped the alien prison in Lockdown and have landed on an abandoned alien planet inhabited by giant bugs.  The crew must explore the tunnel system in search of alien relics that might serve as the key to peace between the aliens and Spacefleet.  Meanwhile, the crew must hold off the onslaught of bugs and keep their shuttle safe.  The Dangerous Planet tunnel system is modular to create easier or harder challenges.  Look for The Captain is Dead: Dangerous Planet in stores on 12 July 2019.

The Captain is Dead: Lockdown is the latest episode in the Captain is Dead co-op adventure game that finds you and up to 6 other crew mates battling aliens and scrambling to keep your star ship functioning.

Even without the help of the late Captain, the crew was able to escape the alien attack in our last episode! However, the hasty repairs to the jump core did not hold, and now the crew finds themselves locked in an alien prison! Now the crew must use all their skills to hack into the alien prison’s systems, while staying hidden and avoiding alien patrols…

Also coming from AEG is a new Smash Up set titled, Oops You Did It Again.

Smash Up has turned the asylum over to the inmates yet again! After the success of It’s Your Fault, we decided to let the fans choose the factions that would make up the latest set of Smash Up, and they went for some powerful choices! A huge field was whittled down to the top four, and here they are: Cowboys call out opposing minions for shootouts, Samurai face their noble end in battle to bring glory to their player, Ancient Egyptians bury secrets deep in the sands, while the Vikings… well they just take other people’s stuff!

It looks like the fans nailed it this time with some of the best genres from pop culture represented in one expansion box.

Keep an eye out for The Captain is Dead: Lockdown in August and Smash Up: Oops You Did It Again in early September.

Alderac Entertainment Group (AEG) continue their excellence into 2018 with some great games on the horizon.

Space Base is designed by John D. Clair (known for Mystic Vale, Custom Heroes, and Edge of Darkness) and has players assume the roles of Commodores in a space fleet. The order and types of cards a player buys for their space base has an impact on the economic engine which they build in order to become Admiral. Establish colonies in a sector, spread your cargo carriers, and expand your mining network to build your income and influence. The game will support 2 – 5 players and plays between 30 – 75 minutes depending on the number of players.

Details on Istanbul: The Dice Game are a bit thin but with a game designed by Rüdiger Dorn and art by Andreas Resch we can only expect great things. It will be a standalone dice game in which 2 – 4 players collect rubies in Istanbul’s bustling bazaar. Through clever use of the dice, players can make money and goods then exchange them for rubies to become the ultimate trader. Expect playtime of 20 – 40 minutes for ages 8+.

Joe Price and JT Smith expand on their hit game in 2018. In The Captain is Dead: Lockdown (Episode 2 in the AEG series, originally Episode 3 when released on Game Crafter) the Captain is still dead and the crew find themselves imprisoned on their own ship. Hostile aliens have taken control of the ship and the players must remain hidden and work together to regain control of the ship. You will need The Captain is Dead base game in order to play this expansion. The game supports 1 – 7 players, aged 12+, and plays between 90 – 120 mins depending on the number of players.

AEG is ramping up for the new year with a couple new releases, one of which will either make you happy or make you very upset.  And that polarizing release is the Destination Fun Combo Pack with expansions for Planes, Trains, and Automobiles all in one box.  This will be great for those that own all three games because you will get content to expand the games all at once, but those of us who don’t own all three, this is putting a lot of content we don’t need into a single box.  This issue is compounded by an MSRP that is significantly higher than the other games, so hopefully AEG will see the light and split the box later.  Until then, look for this on store shelves in March.

Next is a competitive disc flicking game called Light and Dark, where you are two druids trying to either turn everything dark, or turn everything light.  Game setup will have you placing druids and torches all around the table and then you will be flicking your discs around and playing cards in an effort to convert everyone to your side.  The game sounds light-hearted and fun, so look for it on store shelves in January.

Next is a game from Kickstarter called The Captain is Dead, where you are a star-ship crew trying to fight off an attack after your heroic leader was killed.  Everyone will be playing a different character with different strengths and weaknesses as you run around fixing the ship and fending off the invaders.  Look for this on store shelves in February, just don’t be wearing a red shirt.

Last is a party game from Hobby World called Think it Up, where the winner will not be the most knowledgeable, but the one who could think the fastest.  In the game you will flip over a letter card and a topic card, and from those two cards you have one minute to blurt out the answer, if you are the fastest you get points.  After a set number of rounds the person with the most points is the winner.  Look for this quick thinking party game on store shelves in February.
