Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Kickstarter has heated up again with multiple, big projects competing for that hard-earned money in your wallet. Here are some of the projects to have a look at.
The Tokyo Series
The Tokyo Series is 12 unique games, from designer Jordan Draper, about life in Tokyo, that can be played stand-alone or mixed together. This Kickstarter project is funding the printing of 3 games out of the 12. Tokyo Coin Laundry is themed after a laundromat and uses miniature, hand sewn fabric clothes, operable washers and dryers, and more. It includes over a dozen, unique games ranging from 5 to 45 minutes in length from guest designers around the world. Tokyo Tsukiji Market is a heavy, economic fishing game. Players are Japanese fisherman who set custom prices for their catch to sell to other players. There’s a randomized mix of 8+ fish markets which drives a completely-open, player-driven economy, with 7+ support stalls which can improve ships and fishing abilities. Tokyo Game Show has players participate in 5 rounds of a Japanese game show. Players put on colorful wrist bands and compete in tricky, mini games. There are over 50 games included in the box with 10 diverse categories. There’s also the option to use any of the other Tokyo Series titles as featured games.
There are multiple pledge levels which includes the options of prior Tokyo Series releases. Praise, Colorful, and Cactus, from other Japanese designers, have also been added as pledge options. The Tokyo Series Kickstarter project has already hit double its funding goal, with pledges ending on February 12th, 2019. Estimated delivery is October 2019.
War of the Worlds: The New Wave
From designer Denis Plastinin and publisher Grey Fox Games, War of the Worlds: The New Wave is a two-player, asymmetric game set in the years after H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds where humans defend against invading aliens. The aliens have returned in a giant spaceship and landed in Scotland. One player controls the UK defence units and the other the aliens. The game utilizes 3D models and cards, and takes place on a large game board. There is also the “Irish Sea” expansion, which includes more maps and tactical options, though this is on a separate pledge level.
The War of the Worlds: The New Wave Kickstarter project is currently at 8x its funding goal, runs until January 31st, 2019, and is expected to deliver in August of 2019.
Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun – The Board Game
Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun – The Board Game, is a tactical, stealth game for 2-6 players. Its designed by Gergely Kruppa, published by Antler Games, is based on the video game of the same name, and includes over 40 miniatures. 1-4 players are ninja, trying to outsmart the guards, who is controlled by another player called the Daimyo, an evil mastermind. The ninja players can talk around the table, but the Daimyo can hear them, so they have to be careful when crafting plans. Players can choose from 5 unique ninja who have their own skill sets, while the Daimyo controls soldiers and samurai. The game includes story-driven missions in an ever-changing, non-linear campaign structure. The game includes Winter and Night modes which alter the game play. In Winter mode, snow shows the footprints of the ninja which can be tactically utilized to manipulate guards, while Night mode only shows the ninja and guards when they’re in a lit area.
The Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun – The Board Game Kickstarter project is close to its funding goal with over 400 backers. Pledges can be made up until February 14th, 2019, with delivery expected in December of 2019.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures: City Fall
IDW Games are crowd funding the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures: City Fall board game. Its designed by Daniel Lansdown, Pete Walsh, and Kevin Wilson, with art by Jose David Lanza Cebrian, Kevin Eastman, and Tony Vargas. The game is designed for 1-5 players, aged 14+, and plays in 45-150 mins. There are 2 stand-alone boxes to choose from, each with their own missions, enemies and character models. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Change is Constant stand-alone box serves as the first part of the story (based on the 1st two story arcs of the TMNT IDW comics), and is continued in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: City Fall stand-alone box (based on the TMNT IDW comics where 1 of the turtles joins the Foot Clan).
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures: City Fall Kickstarter project is already funded with over 1500 backers, with pledges ending on February 8th, 2019. Expected delivery is October of 2019.
IDW Games has started a Kickstarter Campaign for Nickelodeon Splat Attack, an all out food fight board game for 2-4 players, designed by Jonathan Ying (Doom: The Board Game, Star Wars: Imperial Assault). Players control a team of 4 characters from one of Nick’s well known shows, including Hey Arnold!, Invader ZIM, Spongebob Squarepants and Rugrats. Each team has 4 beautifully detailed miniatures, which move around the arena collecting food to throw. Characters get two actions, defined on their player card, and attacking involves rolling a number of dice equal to the character’s aim rating plus the food’s splat value. When a character is hit with food, they must draw a pentomino (think Tetris) “Splatter Tile”, and fit it on the grid on that character’s player board. If the piece doesn’t fit or the board fills up, that character is out, and the attacker gains a SUPER COOL point. Players gain and lose cool points by achieving objectives or getting hit, and the most cool points at the end of the game, when all the SUPER COOL points are gone, wins. As of this writing, Splat Attack contains 5 character teams (including a special TMNT team), 40 food cards, 4 player boards, 45 splatter tiles, dice and tokens. A special 5-8 player version is also available as its own pledge level.
The Kickstarter Campaign for Nickelodeon Splat Attack continues through June 7, and the game should hit backers’ doorsteps by November 2018.
From Nickelodeon, IDW, and Steve Jackson Games, Munchkin Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is the newest edition of the popular take-that card game that allows players to compete as the heroes in a half shell while kicking down doors. Now on Kickstarter, 3-to-6 players can tread old territory of two fan-favorite franchises for a fresh product that aims to please. Featuring excellent art from TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman, now the classic Munchkin formula looks and feels better than ever. As described on the campaign page:
“Munchkin: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles puts you right into the roles of the Turtles to team up and fight evil! This game takes the butt-kicking, backflipping ninja stylings of the TMNT and combines it with the dungeon-exploring, loot-hoarding gameplay of Munchkin! Play as Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael along with April O’Neil and Casey Jones to take on Shredder, Krang and even more as you race to level 10.”
It cannot be understated that this game is using excellent art. For a series as weathered as Munchkin, this is absolutely the best these cards have ever looked and I’m sure fans of the turtles will agree. There’s also alternate art for player boards and the box itself available, all of which takes advantage of the classic comic-style that launched the TMNT franchise into what we know and love today. If you are interested in Munchkin Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, be sure to check out it’s Kickstarter campaign page to learn more!
IDW Games, Steve Jackson Games, and Nickelodeon Consumer Products announce a new addition to the long running Munchkin series of card games: Munchkin Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
In Munchkin Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, players will play the roles of the Turtles and their friends. The card game features all-new art from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles co-creator, Kevin Eastman, along with artist Tadd Galusha, and gameplay developed by designer Jon Cohn.
Munchkin TMNT will come in three versions: standard, deluxe, and deluxe ultimate. All three will be supported by a Kickstarter campaign set to start on March 7th. The deluxe and deluxe ultimate will be Kickstarter exclusives available only during the Kickstarter campaign. The deluxe version will feature character standees and a fully illustrated mounted Level tracker. The deluxe ultimate version will feature variant, retro-style coloring reminiscent of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics. The standard version will be available in retail stores.
All versions of Munchkin Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are expected to be available in June 2018.

First up is a new release which teams up USAopoly and Steve Jackson Games, and that’s Munchkin X-Men. This continues to add to the plethora of re-skins for the Munchkin game, but if you are into X-men and don’t mind Munchkin, this might be a good buy. The will feature tons of iconic people and items from the X-men universe including Lady Deathstrike, Colossus, Wolverine, and Magneto’s Helmet. So grab your gear and ready those mutant powers, Munchkin X-Men is out on store shelves now!
Next was a tease from IDW Games at this year’s GAMA Trade Show called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Showdown. The theme seems normal enough as the turtles are running through the city sewers being chased be Bebop and Rocksteady and so they have to figure out how to fight them. The interesting part is that this is going to be done in the confines of a tile laying game. I will be interested to see how they plan to pull this off, but we won’t know more until later this year as IDW Games releases more information about it.
Then we have a new card game coming out of Greenbrier Games called Overseers. This is a drafting style game where you are collecting sets of cards in order to score the most point, pretty simple, but it does have some extra bits added on. First is that each player has a special power they can use that allow them to break the rules, like keeping two cards instead of one during a draft. Second is a voting system once everyone reveals their cards on who people think has the highest score. Whoever gets the most votes then has a choice, admit they have the highest score or deny it. If they admit it then they discard a card, if they deny they don’t have to discard anything. However, during scoring if they denied and do have the highest score, they lose two of their highest scoring cards. Most points at the end is the winner. Look for this game on store shelves in April.
Last is a slew of upcoming release from Flying Frog productions for both Last Night on Earth and Shadows of Brimstone. On the Shadows of Brimstone front they have tons coming with the Hellfire Succubi Mission Pack, the Feral Vampires Mission Pack, the Derelict Ship Expansion, and six new ally, enemy, and XXL enemy packs. Most of these were KS extras so it will be good for them to hit general distribution later in the year. Also they showed off posters for the upcoming 10th Anniversary Edition of the Last Night on Earth game, with no doubt all the bells and whistles you expect from such an edition. Keep looking here as we find out more information as the year goes on for these releases, and check out Flying Frog’s Facebook page for pictures and information.
While during the campaign you were able to get her for free, folks who found the TMNT game afterwards will now be able to add April O’Neil to their copy of the game. The hero pack gives you everything you need to play with the character including special colored dice, special action cards, the figure, and the character card. Also of note is that it will come with an additional scenario book to expand the adventures you can have with the turtles and April. Delivery of the pack is set to start in the next couple weeks, and you can pre-order it on Indiegogo right now.
For those of you who love to chuck dice or pretend to be ninja, you will be green with happiness to know that WizKids and designers Mike Elliott and Eric M. Lang just brought us the next iteration of the collectible dice building game Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Dice Masters.
Expanding on the original game, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Dice Masters: Heroes In A Half Shell Box Set introduces 8 new characters. The new set also contains game play scenarios supporting 2 to 4 players.
Play as new versions of Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello or Michelangelo or as allies or villains and each throw of the dice from this new box set will be sure to capture the imagination of Dice Masters rookies and veterans alike.
At the beginning of the month there was some news that rocked the shipping world, and that was one of the largest shipping companies in the world, Hanjin, filing for bankruptcy. This means that all the freight and ships they had out at sea when this happened effectively got stranded because the company could no longer pay port fees. No port fee payments, no docking of ships, no unloading of freight, and stuff just sits out at sea. So far the effect of this in the gaming world hasn’t been felt until now, with Wizkids announcing that Heroes in a Half Shell gravity feeds will be in short supply after launch. This is because a container on one of those stranded ships contains a large portion of the shipment of gravity feeds. Hopefully things with the ports gets resolved soon as Hanjin goes through the difficult process of an international company going bankrupt. There is good news though, in a blog post Wizkids has assured everyone that pre-orders will be filled, and that once more information is known it will be passed on to retailers.
Wizkids has announced another expansion for the TMNT line of Heroclix figures called Shredder’s Return, set for release in March of 2017. This set will just be boosters and a Fast Forces pack (a single pack containing 6 figures) and will feature over 30 new characters pulled from the entire universe of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics and cartoon series. There will be a couple subsets within the entire set such as the Purple Dragon street gang and even variants of the turtles from when they were adventuring in space. The Fast Forces pack will include all new dial variants for the four main turtles as well as Rocksteady and Bebop. Look for all of this to arrive in stores come March 2017, and you can read more about the announcement on the ICv2 site.
