Great news for all – Ares Games will be bringing Ludus Magnus Studio’s games to worldwide distribution with English language support. This partnership will begin with the retail edition of the huge Kickstarter success, Black Rose Wars. This mage vs mage battle royale for 2 to 4 players, designed by Marco Montanaro, features some of the highest quality miniatures in the market and is just the sort of excellent product to be paired with Ares Games’ outreach. While this new version of Black Rose Wars will be different from the one backers received, mostly to fit a better price point, it’s gameplay will remain intact.
“We love what Ludus Magnus Studio is doing– their games have amazing gameplay value and beautiful components. This young and energetic studio was very successful on Kickstarter, but their creations deserve to reach an even wider audience, and we will work together to make this possible,” said Roberto Di Meglio, Director of R&D of Ares Games.
Ares Games will also be distributing the retail version of Ludus Magnus’ current Kickstarter project, Dungeonology. Designed by Diego Fonseca and Danilo Guidi, this game flips dungeon crawling on it’s head by posing players as scholars who are studying the dungeon and it’s inhabitants rather than ransacking it. As of writing this, it has already been funded six times over proving that it’s novel concept is worth the look. The game was designed by Gremlin Project and is an evolution of the Galaxy Defenders game.
Ares Games, publishers of hits such as War of the Ring and Sword & Sorcery (but also well known for publishing many war-themed games), announced a partnership with Pendragon Games to distribute titles in North America. They will be starting with Hexamonia and Waterloo. Their official press release follows:
The two companies extend their co-operation partnership to distribution, starting with the Greek-themed “Hexemonia” and the Napoleonic “Waterloo: Enemy Mistakes” board games
Ares Games and Pendragon Game Studio announce they are extending the scope of their partnership, which began in 2016 with the release of the survival horror board game “Last Friday”. Ares Games will also distribute games directly published in English by Pendragon, starting with the epic, ancient-Greece themed “Hexemonia” and the Napoleonic game “Waterloo: Enemy Mistakes.”
Until now, Ares Games has produced and distributed the English version of three games created by Pendragon – the survival horror game “Last Friday”, the new edition of the card game “Stay Away!”, and the just released “Monsters vs Heroes”, a card game of thrilling mash-up of Victorian mystery and horror stories. “Hexemonia” and “Waterloo. Enemy Mistakes” had limited distribution in Europe, but they were never available before in the USA.
Hexemonia is an epic game of expansion and hegemony set in ancient Greece. Players are leaders of mighty city-states competing for supremacy in a relentless struggle for dominance, each fighting in the name of its own patron god. From humble beginnings, they must grow their might and power, gather resources from their holdings and use them to expand their city and curry favor with the gods. And then, use their military and cultural might to overcome their rivals. Hexemonia is a game for 2 to 4 players, with an average playing time of 30-45 minutes.
Waterloo: Enemy Mistakes is a strategic game about the last battle of Napoleon Bonaparte that forever changed the destiny of modern Europe, for 2/3 players, from 13 years old and over, with an average playing time of 150 minutes. The game recreates the clash between the British army, supported by the Prussian army, and the French one. Players fight an immense battle: 3 Commanders in Chief give instructions to the 14 Generals, who leads 141 Units (corps of artillery, foot soldiers and cavalries) on the big battlefield. The game uses a die as a random factor, but the focus of the gameplay emphasizes above all the elements that characterize the commands and the decisions the players must do.

If you couldn’t get enough of the campaign in Sword & Sorcery – Immortal Souls, then the Sword & Sorcery – Arcane Portal expansion allows you to continue the epic campaign. Players travel to the imposing Thunder Mountains after hearing of a cult trying to the end the world (as they’re wont to do). You’ll face new perilous quests, The Hellspawn master enemy, and 15 new demonic enemies. The expansion also includes new items, traps, treasures, events, and enemy powers.
To take on these new challenges you can add new, powerful characters to your Sword & Sorcery campaign. The first two Hero Packs, Onamor (a Chaotic Necromancer or Lawful Summoner) and Victoria (a Lawful Captain or Chaotic Pirate), are due in February 2018. Two months later, Morrigan (Demon Huntress or Witch Huntress) and Ryld (Bard or Blademaster) will see release. These Hero Packs include a Ghost Soul version of their miniatures.
The Ghost Soul Form Heroes pack allows you to replace the miniatures included in Sword & Sorcery – Immortal Souls with their Ghost Soul version when they die. Also included in this pack is a set of 10 double-sided Background Talent cards which allows further customization of your characters based on their experiences prior to their adventuring life.
The Sword & Sorcery – Immortal Souls base game is required to play with this additional content. The game is an epic-fantasy cooperative board game for 1-5 players, aged 12+, in which heroes fight together against the forces of evil (controlled by the game itself) to break the spell that binds their souls. Sword & Sorcery is a game designed by Gremlin Project (who also created Galaxy Defenders) and is published by Ares Games.
Origins Game Fair is next week (June 14-18, Columbus, Ohio) and Ares Games will be attending as a sponsor of the show. As such, they will be presenting the long-awaited epic-fantasy cooperative board game, Sword & Sorcery as well as four new airplanes in the WW1 Wings of Glory line. In addition, three games coming this summer will be showcased at Ares’ booth – Hunt for the Ring, the hidden movement, deduction and adventure game, Divinity Derby, the racing and betting game, and This War of Mine the Board Game, the tabletop adaptation of the award-winning video game.
In addition to the demos at the booth, many events are scheduled during the five days of the convention. Buckeye Gamers in Flight will run events of WW1 and WW2 Wings of Glory and Sails of Glory, with prize support from Ares. Attempts of new world records of most players in a game will be held by Ares. On Friday, from 10AM to 12PM, for WW1 Wings of Glory, and from 12PM to 2PM, for WW2 Wings of Glory. On Saturday, it will be time to try to break the world record of Sails of Glory, at 10AM. The schedule also includes 9 Sword & Sorcery’s events and 4 Galaxy Defender’s missions.

Originally announced by us here, Sword & Sorcery has been quite the success on Kickstarter. Having raised over 540% of it’s intended goal with over 3.2k backers, Sword & Sorcery is days away from becoming a reality. So, other than it’s success what’s to get excited about? Well, there’s been a TON of new content added including several different pledge levels, many new stretch goals, and quite a bit of add-on content. Below is just a snippet of what’s been added. With 4 days left of the campaign, be sure to check it out here.
Elaborately billed as “The Ultimate Heroic Fantasy Co-Op Boardgame Experience,” Sword & Sorcery is an upcoming release by Ares Games, designed by Gremlin project, the team many will remember as the force responsible for 2014’s Galaxy Defenders. There’s a trailer up on YouTube and a website up at http://www.sword-and-sorcery.com/. The “first set” for the game (titled “Immortal Souls”) is due out in Q3-4 of 2106, presuming the success of a Kickstarter campaign slated for September. Currently available information promises many carryover design features from Galaxy Defenders, and more:
Each player controls one or more heroes – legendary characters brought back to life by powerful sorcery. Weakened by the resurrection, they grow stronger during their story-driven quests. By acquiring soul points during missions, the heroes’ souls regenerate, restoring their legendary status with multiple powers, magic and soul weapons, and powerful artifacts.
Designed by Gremlin Project (the same team who created Galaxy Defenders), Sword & Sorcery‘s game system represents the perfect evolution of its forerunner. Gameplay is faster and dynamic, thanks to an innovative area movement and area control system, with new features never seen before in a game of this category.
