strategy

Hockey fans rejoice!  Trick Shot offers a fast-paced board game of Ice Hockey with streamlined rules, a balance of luck and strategy, and free form movement over the ice with cool plastic miniatures.  Each team is comprised of a goalie, a center, two wingmen and two defensemen, each position having different size and speed characteristics.  Each team also has four strategy cards for their line that changes the rules for the line.  Players maneuver their team across a huge gridded gameboard rink, rolling dice to pass, shoot, score, steal, and check.  As long as player actions are successful, additional actions can be taken.  A player may spend a stamina token to reroll the dice if an action is unsuccessful.  Once all the stamina tokens are spent, however, the player will need to spend a turn to refresh the line to regain stamina, giving the opposing team an opportunity to take advantage of the transitioning team or to refresh their own line.

This game will not be available in retail stores.  After the Kickstarter campaign ends, it will only be available from the manufacturer and only the core box.  The Kickstarter campaign, like many Kickstarter campaigns, offers many stretch goals, options, and add-ons that will not be available later.  The miniatures come unpainted, but backers may pledge for the pre-painted miniatures available only during the campaign. Backers may also add an extra set of unpainted miniature to paint themselves in their favorite team colors.

Trick Shot plays 2-4 players, ages 12+, in 30-90 minutes.  Contents include huge gameboard, 12 miniatures, 6 double-sided stamina tokens, 8 quick reference cards, 20 line cards, 6 custom dice, 12 colored bases, 2 pucks, 1 turn marker, 7 goal counters, 1 double-sided 6th players token, and rulebook.  The Kickstarter Campaign runs through 30 May with an expected delivery in March 2020. Check out the Kickstarter Campaign to try out the game on Tabletopia, print and play your own copy, and learn more about the game.

Now on Kickstarter is Mechanica, a unique engine building strategy board game.  In Mechanica, players operate a factory to produce robots, basic robots at first but eventually upgrading to the deluxe robots as they improve their factories.  Players can purchase factory improvements to produce better robots faster and ship more robots at a time to earn greater income to continue upgrading their factories. Players may also build specialize robot on a blueprint to add to the total value of their factory.

The factory floor player board starts out as a simple conveyor belt system.  Each factory improvement is a puzzle piece that fits neatly onto the factory floor and interlocks with the factory and other pieces, creating a unique engine of robot production.  Another unique feature of the game is the rotating shop board where the various improvements are available for purchase. New improvements are more expensive, but as shop rotates, the improvements become cheaper until the improvement hits the end of the shop line and become recycled (removed from play).  The game comes in a ready-to-play tray that enables players to begin playing the game almost immediately upon opening the box, reducing set-up time and facilitating easy and organized storage of game components.

While the artwork is not finalized, a trio of new artists have created a delightful 1950’s retro future look to the game.

Mechanica plays 1-4 players, ages 12+, in about 60 minutes. Contents include 34 factory boards, 54 improvement pieces, 72 tidybot figures (24 of three different colors), 15 blueprint cards, 1 ARMAND-O card, 90 money tokens, 4 vault cards, 4 reminder cards, instruction book, single player chip, a rotating shop board, and a play-in-the-box tray. To learn more, check out the Kickstarter campaign which runs thru 3 March.  Mechanica is expected to be delivered in November this year.

Breaking Games announces The Stars Align, a two-player strategy game where players take turns placing their stars in the sky to set off a shooting star.  Players use constellation cards to place stars on a playing board which doubles as the carrying bag.  Once a player has placed a complete row of stars in one color, the stars are removed from the board as a shooting star for the player.  If the playing board is filled with stars, then all the stars flip to their reverse color and play continues.  The first stargazer to catch five shooting stars is the winner!  The game plays 2 players, ages 6+, in about 20-30 minutes.  The game includes the carry bag/game cloth, constellation cards, 49 wooden star meeples, and 10 shooting star points (5 in white and 5 in black).  Look for The Stars Align at a friendly local game store near you this November.

Travel back in time to the world of Ancient Greece with their art, academia and mythology in Hellenica by MR. B. Games. This game combines a multitude of mechanics such as area control, resource management, strategy and combat that makes it infinitely replayable. The object is to reach 3 of your chosen objectives.

“Your goal is to become the preeminent symbol of Greece for all posterity by completing a combination of secret and public goals. Will you be remembered as a warmonger or a peaceful philosopher? Great priest or apostate? Will you develop a devotion to the gods or focus on the advancement of your people? Can you guide your civilization during these turbulent times? Will your vision of Hellenic civilization be remembered for all time, or will you merely be a stepping stone for another…?”

As you try to reach your 3 objectives you will take 7 steps per turn:  Research/Advancement, Worship, Build, Train, Supply Troops, World Event , Pass, Upkeep Phase. All of these steps are specific and intricate and the direction you take will depend on the goals you have. If you want to gain more favor from the Gods then you would build more temples and try to earn more favor tokens. If you have a military objective you would build more barracks and train more troops.

Hellenica is on Kickstarter until September 7th, 2018 and will be exclusive to this campaign and MR. B. Games. So don’t wait!

“The Limited Edition Core Game of Hellenica will not be available outside of this campaign and direct from MR. B. Games and will feature solo play and support up to 7 players. Rather than make those expansions, we are including everything we have in the Core Game (think of it as the the Core Game AND the first two expansions already bundled together!)”

Dawn of the Archmage continues the rich fantasy world of Archmage Origins. Once the rulers of Sorcado, mages have fallen from power. Challengers arrive from every corner of the land. Knighted Paladins, land-hungry Lords… all seek to dethrone the mages. But mages don’t go down easily. It’s time to fight back!

SolarFlare Games announces their latest Kickstarter project, Dawn of the Archmage, a miniatures skirmish game in which each player controls a mage from a school of magic.  Each player will be summoning powerful monsters to the battlefield and pitting them against the other players in battle.  The winner of the game will rise above the other mages, ascending to the rank of Archmage.

Here’s a look at more from the press release for Dawn of the Archmage:

Each mage uses summoning powers to bring new and dangerous creatures to the battlefield. Expending massive mystical energy, their battle grows in frenetic power as monstrous beasts fight for the mages who control them, seeking to destroy all challengers in a magic-fueled frenzy.

In addition to summoning fearsome creatures to fight, mages possess a selection of powerful spells. With a single word, the battle can shift. Manipulating odds, controlling movement, and countering rival spells, the mage’s strategy will determine the supreme ruler of Sorcado.

The battle rages everywhere. Modular map tiles allow the mages to customize the battle area. Large, sprawling battlefields or close, confined ones… the fight is different every time. Will it be the Arena? The Forest? The Ruins? Or even Underground?

Dawn of the Archmage goes live on Kickstarter on August 1, 2017.  The project features two separate pledge levels, the first including one copy of the game, and the other including a copy of the game as well as the card game Archmage Origins.

Dawn of the Archmage is for 2-4 players ages 8 and up and plays in 40-80 minutes.  For more information on the project, visit the Kickstarter page here.

Final Frontier Games would like to announce Rise to Nobility, “a 1-5 player worker placement game set in a beautiful fantasy world.”  Rise to Nobility is a dice-based worker placement game set in The Five Realms, the same fantasy world as Cavern Tavern.  The game features a strongly thematic engine-building mechanic and many paths to victory.

The following quote from the game’s Kickstarter page describes the basic mechanics of the game and what makes it unique:

“At the beginning of each round, every player rolls 5 dice that represent their available actions in the game. The locations in the city have requirements for certain dice values…The challenging thing is that the total value of dice each player can use during the round is determined by their reputation in the city. Players start with 9 reputation and can increase or decrease their reputation by taking certain actions in the city. With numerous options for spending their dice, players will need to carefully plan their strategy and prioritize their actions.

Each player takes on the role of a landowner with a unique ability. Your goal is to rise from anonymity to the rank of lord. At the end of 10 rounds, the player with the most victory points takes over the head seat at the Stone Council and wins the game.”

Rise to Nobility is for 2-5 players ages 13 and up and plays in 25 minutes/player.  For more information, visit the game’s Kickstarter page.
