World (2009), by designer Philippe Keyaerts is a multiple award winning
critical darling, currently sitting in the top
250 games on BGG. In Small World, 2-5 players each merge a race with a power
to create crazy hybrid troops in an area control board game across a, well…
Small World. Players control the rise and fall of their troops, bringing in new
races when their current army fades. From the photos, it appears that the
Warcraft variant will follow the same path, showing races such as Humans, Goblins,
Trolls and Blood Elves, coupled with powers such as Farmer, Herbalist, Ranger,
or Enraged. The map in progress looks very small indeed, but is clearly labeled
as a “work in progress”
Look for the World of Warcraft Small World project to come
to light in Spring 2020, and a great thank you to our friends at BoardGameGeek for breaking

Once objectives are complete players will read the story taking pace on the Page of their Book out loud.
The universe of Small World by Days of Wonder is expanding again. In the latest expansion by original Small World designer Philippe Keyaerts and T. Alex Davis 3-6 players will take flight to inhabit islands in the sky. This expansion is scheduled for a release at Esenin October, followed by a December release in North America
Seven new races and powers will be available in the new expansion. New races as well as all previously released races will now have the opportunity to fight to control additional territories in the sky.
It was a lovely spring morning; Giants were getting new tattoos and the rest of the Small World inhabitants were preparing for another day of conquest. An eerie silence settled on the lands as a huge shadow glided over forest and mountain. Had the Wizards accidentally given their flocks of sheep flight again ?
All eyes turned to the horizon as an archipelago of Sky Islands floated over Small World… and realization dawned at the same time as the sun. New lands meant new riches! Within a few hours, the most enterprising races were swarming up a Giant Magical Beanstalk and a Stairway to Heaven on their way to wealth. The battle for the Sky Islands had just begun…
Featuring a double sided board, players will choose to add two or three islands in the sky with the new board as well as utilizing the original board which will be set for one fewer player (example – the original board would be set for 3 players if playing a four player game).
Access points via beanstalk and stairway are created between the Sky Islands and the regular board in different regions. A race standing on one of the access points can attempt to move into a sky island space with a matching symbol. Control all the regions on a Sky Island and gain an additional coin at the end of your turn.
A storage tray is included in the expansion to hold new races, powers and tokens.
Award Winning Franchise
While only 8 years old, the game already has 16 expansions, which makes sense given the popularity and critical success of the game. The original Small World game won many awards when released in 2009 including:
After going without expansions for two years now, Small World is back with another new map for 2 to 5 players. Aptly named Small World: River World, this new map features rivers running all over the map, making capturing water areas vital to any strategy. In addition to the new maps you now have pirates to contend with as well as your opponents, so you will have to be extra careful. Toss in some new event tiles themed around the new map and you have a decent expansion for this evergreen game. Check out Days of Wonder’s blog post for more information, and look for it to hit stores in November, or you can pick up a copy while at Essen.
Days of Wonder has announced that the Designer Edition of their hit game Small World will be available in limited amounts to everyone on June 9th. Small World is an area control game that takes fantasy races mixes them with unique special powers in a way that you are never guaranteed the same power with a specific race each time. Players try to control as many territories on a small map with their race/power combo until they decide to send their race into decline and start again with a new combination. You can only have one active race and one in decline on the board at a time and you will score points for every area you control at the end of your turn. It’s quite fun to play and one of the rare games that is easy to introduce to new gamers as well as providing enough strategy and depth for gamers to enjoy.
Small World Designer Edition was an add on in a Kickstarter for the digital edition of Small World. It takes the already high quality components that Days of Wonder is known for and brings them to a level that very few games achieve.
The Small World Designer Edition includes deluxe wooden tokens covering all races from the base game and the Cursed!,Grand Dames, Be Not Afraid and Royal Bonus expansions, plus Race banners and Special Powers banners that are all heat-printed on wood. The victory points are custom metal coins that vary in shape and size depending on their value, and are stored in little leather purses to hide your fortune from your opponents. The Designer Edition also includes three super-sized boards for 2-3, 4-5 and 6 players, as well as numerous custom finely-sculpted resin figures for game elements such as the Dragon, Heroes, Pots of Gold, Fireballs, Catapult, etc. Last but not least, it also includes the famous “Pocket Encyclopedia” of Small World from the Kickstarter Campaign.
The components all come in a beautiful wooden box and in total is said to weigh approx. 50 lbs. Tom Vasal has a video review here where you can see the game in all it’s glory. Honestly even if you have no interest in attempting to purchase a copy it’s worth watching the video just to see the final product.
Speaking of attempting to purchase the game will in a very limited release and Days of Wonder recommends if you are interested in buying a copy you should place an order as soon as possible after it goes on sale.
On June 9, 2015, on 3 pm GMT(8 am PDT) we will open the orders for the Designer Edition of Small World. We anticipate a high amount of orders, and we must remind you that our stocks are limited. So, make sure to place your order as soon as possible on June 9! Please also note that the offer is limited to one copy per person; you cannot order several copies of the Designer Edition.
If you want a copy of the game and you don’t manage to grab a one of the limited Designer Editions or don’t want to pay the hefty (but very fair) price you should head over to your favorite FLGS/OLGS and get yourself a copy of Small World.
It is rare that I ever drool over something that has hit Kickstarter. But seeing these beautiful storage solutions for the game small world I am having to work hard not to salivate too much. These are a very elegant solution to a problem that has driven me nuts for quite awhile. Storing Small World can be rather tedious since the race markers are abundant and rather small.
Done in birch these are very nice looking. they provide three different options for the box.
The BASIC storage set holds the base game and several small expansions.
The ENHANCED storage set holds the base game and Realms and the other small expansions.
The DELUXE storage set holds the base game and Small World Underground and Realms and all the other expansions.
With options of either an assembled box or getting it to assemble yourself this project creator understands that many of the people in this audience tend to be willing to put some time in assembling something even if they might not have the skills to actually design something like this themselves.
This project has staggered fulfillment dates based on which level you back at the simpler boxes seem to have earlier dates with the basic unassembled box being available in February followed in March by the assembled basic set. From a practical standpoint I would anticipate some of the finished boxes possibly taking longer than projected. But I would expect unfinished boxes should be able to go out pretty close to on time. Additionally this project creator has run another successful storage project.
For all of the details on the project head over to Kickstarter here.
Days of wonder has announced their newest expansion for Small World “A Spiders Web” with this expansion comes three new races (Ice Witches, Skags, and Slingmen) and three new special powers (Copycat, Lava, and Soul-Touch). This expansion also features a plastic storage tray which allows for storage of all the badges and tokens from not just “A Spiders Web” but all of the recent expansions for the game.
Additionally they are releasing the “Royal Bonus” expansion which until this point only be available through their Small World 2 Kickstarter campaign. This expansion also features three new races (Fauns, Igors, and Shrubmen) and three new powers (Fireball, Aquatic, and Behemoth).
Finally two long out of print mini expansions will be coming back into print. Necromancer Island
In Necromancer Island, one of the players assumes the role of a dreaded Necromancer who inhabits an island in the center of Small World’s central Lake region. He captures the souls of all Race tokens lost to conquests, using them to progressively spawn Ghosts who invade the surrounding Regions. To make matters worse, his Powers grow as his reach across the land increases. If the Necromancer succeeds in bringing all of his Ghosts into play, anytime before the game’s end, he wins!
and Leaders of Small World
The expansion consists of 24 leader tokens that are neither a race nor a power. When you pick a new race, you can opt to buy its leader. The leader acts as an additional race token. The leader, however, disappears as soon as the race goes into decline. Also, the leader is brave, which means that he can only be staying at regions that are not immune.
Leaders can be held hostage for ransom. If the ransom is not paid, the leader counts as two victory points at the end of the game for the player that captured the leader.
All of these expansions will be available from retailers starting in November and “A Spiders Web” and “Royal Bonus” will be available at Essen.

Announced today in various news sites, including Forbes, Days of Wonder (publisher of games such as Small World, Ticket to Ride, and the recent hit Five Tribes) is merging with Asmodee (publisher of 7 Wonders and Eclipse).
By merging with Days of Wonder, Asmodee increases its exposure to the US game market, and it also gets access to the company’s award-winning portfolio, which includes Small World, Shadows Over Camelot and the Ticket to Ride series. Days of Wonder has also made major strides creating digital versions of its games for iOS devices and personal computers.
Days of Wonder will continue to operate with its current team as an independent brand and studio within the Asmodee Group, according to the company, and will continue its mission to release a limited number of new games with high production values. Adrien Martinot, who has led the company’s European sales and marketing operations for the last 7 years, will be the new head of the studio; current Days of Wonder CEO Eric Hautemont and vice president Mark Kaufman will continue in an advisory role to Asmodee CEO Stéphane Carville.
I found it interesting that Bruno Cathala had a recent release with both companies (Five Tribes and Abyss) at Gencon.
