Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective

Asmodee has a new press release featuring one of the ten cases from the new Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective standalone box, Carlton House & Queen Park. “The Demise of a Teatotaller” sets up a brutal stabbing, a devastated widow, and her best friend, found with the murder weapon in hand. To make things more complicated, Scotland Yard has demanded Sherlock update them on a second case at the same time.

Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective is a series of 1-8 player games in which players solve cases through the use of detailed clues and gorgeous components, including newspapers, maps, paper scraps and booklets. The game originally came out in the early 1980s, moved its way through video game implementations, and had a beautiful revision from Space Cowboys and Asmodee in 2016. Standalone versions with 10 cases each followed, starting with the original Thames Murders & Other Cases (2016), then Jack the Ripper & West End Adventures (2017), and the upcoming box Carlton House & Queen Park (2018) due out in February. Be aware that due to the long history of the series, some of the mysteries in the new box were originally done in the Ystari version of the game in the 1980s, although Asmodee states details and solutions have been changed.

Space Cowboys has announced that the work of Sherlock Holmes is not done yet. The world of Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective is expanding again with Carlton House & Queen’s Park in the first quarter of 2018.

The fog creeping its way through the streets of London envelopes you in mist. The streets are lined with gas lit lamps, highlighting the various shops and other establishments. Victorian London is known for its greatness, but within the dark streets, devious acts of crime are committed far too often. Outcries from the beautiful Queen’s Park can be heard, warning all that are within earshot that something is perpetually amiss. Whispers in dark taverns mention the mysterious Carlton House Mansion—the crimes that have been committed inside are both unspeakable and incredibly difficult to solve.

As in each of the Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective games, this edition includes 10 cases for you to solve as you enter the world as one of Victoria London’s Baker Street Irregulars. The games plays co-operatively for multiple players to work on the same case together.

The new stand alone expansion includes some of the most rare and long out-of-print expansions from the original game by Ystari. These cases have been updated and revised, correcting errors that existed in previous edition.

Playing the Long Game
Space Cowboys has indicated that the Carlton House & Queen’s Park includes some of the longest cases in the series to date.

Each case provides an introduction but the rest is up to you. Provided with a map, directory, and newspapers, you have the freedom to go wherever you want to chase down clues and solve these mysteries. In addition to the traditional maps of London, Carlton House & Queen’s Park collection provides two new locations to explore. Irregulars can now explore the grounds of Carlton House and inside the house itself, as well as a map of Queen’s Park.

In the Box
Like in previous iterations of the game, boxes will include:

  • 10 Case booklets
  • Maps
  • Newspapers
  • Additional resources to aid you in your journey

This release is the third in a series of Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective re-releases by Space Cowboys. The first in the most recent editions of the series was Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective: Jack the Ripper & West End Adventures released in early 2017. This was followed by Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective: The Thames Murders & Other Cases also released in 2017.

Here we have a trio of new game announcements from some notable names in the industry, Asmodee, CMON, and Plaid Hat Games.  First we have Asmodee and Space Cowboys with a new edition of the Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective game, which was last printed by Ystari back in 2015.  This new edition contains the same ten cases as before, however, they have retranslated and revised all the cases so the solutions and clues in some of them will have changed from the Ystari version.  So while it may not be much new content for the owners of the original, this still brings the game back into print for those wanting a mind melting challenge.  Look for this new edition on store shelves in the third quarter of this year, and you can check out the preview on Asmodee’s site.

Next from CMON we have the announcement of the next game in their Zombicide line, Zombicide Green Horde.  They are staying in the middle ages with this one and so will be a sequel to the wildly successful Zombicide Black Plague.  The terrors will be numerous and overpowering for our warriors in this game, but together they just might be able to pull through.  “If Zombicide: Black Plague gave you nightmares, Zombicide: Green Horde will make them come true.”  You can see the announcement for the game on CMON’s page, and look forward to the Kickstarter later this year.

Finally we have a new game being developed by Plaid Hat Games called Crystal Clans.  This is going to be a two player tactical card game in a similar vein to Summoner Wars with different armies, card based units, and included maps to deploy on.  However, in the comments of the announcement they have stated that is where the similarities end, and that Crystal Clans is going to have fresh new mechanics to make it stand out.  The game is being designed by Colby Dauch, Andrea Mezzotero, and J. Arthur Ellis along with illustrations by the talented Martin Abel.  You can check out the announcement on Plaid Hat’s site to see some of the excellent art being put together, and then prepare yourself for it’s planned fall release.

Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective is a very highly rated, and highly difficult, game where you put your wits up against the great Sherlock Holmes.  In the game you are trying to solve a mystery, and all you have are the clues left behind, the newspapers of the day, and witness testimonies to figure out the case.  But even with this information, there will be a healthy amount of brain power needed to put it all together.  But say you have solved all the cases in the base box, what do you do now?

Asmodee has heard your cry and is reprinting the expansion to the base game called Jack the Ripper and West End Adventures.  This new box will come with 10 new cases for you to burn your brain over as you try to catch the notorious Jack the Ripper.  Also of interest is that 4 of those cases are contained in a mini campaign that takes you from the streets of London to the Whitechapel neighborhood.  Will you be able to solve the four horrible murders one after the other, or will he get away yet again?

To read more about the expansion you can check out Asmodee’s preview page, and look forward to it’s release in the 4th quarter.
