Coal Baron was released a few years ago by R&R Games and was all about mining coal and building an industry around that to gain the most money. Now Stronghold Games is going to be releasing the card game version of the game called Coal Baron the Great Card Game. The game promises to play quicker and easier than it’s full sized brother, while still retaining the aspects of it that people enjoyed. The German version of the game is out but the English release will be coming in February of 2017, so look forward to it.
In addition to Ulm, two other games will be coming out in October from R&R Games. The first of those games is the family weight adventure game called Touria, a game where you are an adventuring band of heroes. You will go around fighting dragons, collecting gems, and trying to obtain the king’s blessing to marry Princess Tara, or Prince Talon if he is more your speed. The actions you have to choose from are dictated by the four towers on the board, each one having four quadrants with different actions in each one. On your turn, whichever actions are pointed towards you on those towers are the options you have, so tower orientation is important and will have to be a part of your plan. It’s a race to the finish and whoever gets to the castle first will be the winner.
Second is Coin Quest, a bidding game where you are bidding with coins to obtain more valuable coins, and in the end have the most valuable collection. Not much has been released about this game so I will let the publisher do the talking;
A DIABOLICAL BIDDING GAME! In this winner take all game, you are a part of a mysterious cabal of elite coin collectors. Outbid and outsmart your peers in an informal auction to acquire better coins. The shrewdest collector will be the one who goes home with all the coins!
Look for both these games on store shelves in October.
R&R Games is releasing a new strategy game in October called Ulm that features a unique action selection mechanic. In the game the town of Ulm is prospering, even as the construction of the cathedral is not yet finished, and people are looking to make their mark. You will do this during the game through card play, moving your barge farther down the Danube River, and gaining influence in the different areas of the city. When you can do these different actions is based on the action tile grid, which is a 3×3 grid of randomly seeded tiles with the different actions on them. On your turn you will take a tile and push one of the rows, and then the three tiles left in that row are the three actions you get to take. There are special rules for which rows you can or can’t push, but that is the crux of the action selection, knowing which way to push the tiles to get the actions you need. At the end, when the cathedral construction is complete, the player with the most points is the winner. Look for this game on store shelves and October, and then maybe you will be able to play a game about where you live.
Day 3 of GAMA trade show started with a lot of new exciting family, action, and dexterity games.
Mayday Games has a new dexterity game, Chopstick Dexterity MegaChallenge 3000 (CDMC 3K). In this 2-3 player game, players compete to grab specific wooden tokens from a bowl using only their chopsticks. CDMC 3K was funded by Kickstarter in April of last year and had some delays in shipping, but it is available now.
R&R Games will be releasing Cup-a-Cup next week. In this action/dexterity game, players race to grab the correct cup after rolling the dice.
North Star Games was showing off a couple games at GAMA. Wits & Wagers, a party trivia game where players get points for both guessing answers correctly and for betting on the right answer, has a deluxe edition coming in June. The deluxe edition has nice poker-like chips for the player chips. Evolution, a strategy card game where players adapt and evolve their species to survive, has a second edition with newer and more colorful art.
Kosmos has a new 3D stacking game called Dimension that’s available now. In this puzzle game, players try to stack balls to match all the tasks shown on the playing cards before time runs out.
Queen Games was showing off Parfum, their new game where players roll Aroma dice to create unique perfumes and sell them to their clients. Parfum was funded by Kickstarter on March 11, and is estimated to be delivered in July of this year.
Hanabi; named for the Japanese word for “fireworks,” is a cooperative game in which players try to create the perfect fireworks show. Trouble is, it’s dark out, so you can’t really see what you are working with!
Each player holds their cards so that only the other players can see them. They must give each other vital information and remember all the information in order to choose which cards to play. Helping each other play the right cards at the right time is the key to creating an unforgettable show and avoiding being booed by the audience!
In the deluxe version, the cards are replaced with beautiful Mah Jhong-like tiles! So build your fireworks and create a show that’s sure to be memorable!
Legend speaks of the enchanted Sapphire Island…Shrouded in mist and magic, the island summons Mages to battle in the ultimate test of magical combat. But only those who survive the supernatural duels are granted great prestige and riches.
Spellcaster is a card game pitting two to four Mages in a duel of supremacy. You win by exhausting your opponent’s energies or by collecting enough Sorcery Sapphires to overpower them. Sixty different spells are included, from 4 fields of study: Combat, Conjuring, Healing and Sorcery. Cast one or more spells each turn to overcome your opponent and become the Grand Master Mage!
