Renegade Game Studios has announced an exclusive early release program for the upcoming expansion Lanterns: The Emperor’s Gifts. The full launch isn’t scheduled until Quarter One, but brick and mortar stores who sign up for this limited offer will receive 12 or more copies to sell in time for the Holiday shopping season.

Sara Erickson, Director of Sales and Marketing for Renegade Game Studios explains the intent behind the program:

“When we released Lanterns in 2015, local hobby stores embraced it and we owe a lot of its success to the enthusiasm of these businesses. We’re very excited to be offering these same stores an exclusive chance to sell the expansion during the holidays.”

Check out Renegade Games Studio’s website for the full announcement.

Fans of the award-winning Lanterns: The Harvest Festival will have something new to look forward to from the emperor in the new expansion: The Emperor’s Gift.

Designed by Christopher Chung and published by Renegade Games studio, Lanterns is a hit family-weight tile laying game where players attempt to collect lantern cards by strategically placing their tiles. Sets of lantern cards are traded in sets to score honor (points) in this game. The twist in this game comes from the fact that all players will receive lantern cards when you place a tile, so you’ll always have to watch what your opponents are collecting.

The new expansion, designed by Jason D. Kingsley, includes player pavilions that can be built on tiles that you place. Colour matches between your pavilion and the tile earn you a new currency that allows you to activate new special abilities from the Emperor. This expansion will add a new level of depth to those already familiar with the game as these new actions will have to be taken into account for you to surpass your opponents!

Lanterns: The Emperor’s Gift will hit stores  in January 2017.

mensa select

After 42 hours of nonstop board gaming through 63 different games, Mensa has announced their Mensa Select winners for 2016.  They are:

These are the second wins for Renegade Game Studios and Breaking Games who both secured wins last year with Lanterns and Letter Tycoon respectively.  The win by Bezier is it’s third with previous wins being for Castles of Mad King Ludwig in 2015 and Suburbia in 2013.  As for Columbia Games and Blue Orange games, these are their first wins for the Mensa Select award so hopefully this means good things for their futures.  You can see the article about the winners here, and visit the Mensa Mind Games site to see all the previous year’s winners.

knee jerk

We all have initial reactions to situations we find ourselves in, and we typically refer to these as “knee-jerk reactions.”  Renegade Game Studios has encapsulated this theme into a game aptly entitled Knee Jerk, a party game in which players will hear a situation presented and must shout out an ending for the situation as fast as possible.

For example, such a situation might be “I Feel Panicked At The Beach Because I Saw ______!”  Players will be able to shout anything to complete the statement, such as “A shark!”, “A smoke monster!” or even “My grandmother in a bikini!”.  The first player to respond receives a point, but if more than one player responds, the host player chooses his or her favorite answer.  The forces players to offer creative, witty responses on the fly.

New scenes and situations (Your First Date, A Haunted Mansion to Outer Space, etc.) are presented in rapid-fire-succession, creating a zany, fast, and hilarious atmosphere.  The game boasts 150,000 different possible situations.   The first player to achieve 3 points is the winner of Knee Jerk.

Knee Jerk is a game for 4-8 players ages 9 and up and plays in 10 minutes.  A definitive release date has yet to be announced.

Mensa Mind Games each year evaluates dozens of games to determine which should earn the honor of being a Mensa Select game, and they have finished evaluating this year’s batch and announced the winners.  The five games that earned this distinction are:

Castles of Mad King Ludwig – Bezier Games, Inc

Dragonwood – Gamewright

Lanterns: The Harvest Festival – Renegade Game Studios and Foxtrot Games

Letter Tycoon – Ad Magic/Breaking Games

Trekking the National Parks – Bink Ink, LLC

That is a second win by Bezier Games after winning in 2013 with Suburbia and Gamewright adds another to it’s list of winners with this year being their eighth win.  The announcement as well as a link to previous winners can be read HERE.

Originally launched in 2008 the award winning Snow Tails returns! Renegade Game Studios has obtained the rights to this fast paced sled racing game and is updating it with brand new artwork from artist Beth Sobel.

Snow Tails includes a modular track which allows for a multitude of courses to be created. As you play cards while racing along these courses you will have to take care not to lose control of your sled because for every dent you take you hand-size shrinks.

“It’s one of the best racing games we’ve ever played and are really excited to be able to make it available again,” says Renegade President Scott Gaeta.

Look for Snow Tails to be available in stores August of this year.
