Selecta has released some fantastic children’s games over the years, including Viva Topo! (a favorite in my house!). Now, thirteen great children’s games previously released by Selecta are now being published by Pegasus Spiele, featuring a whole new box design illustrated by Anne Pätzke.
This new design features new, loving illustrations that will greatly appeal to children. Additionally, a colored dots-scheme for the background of the game boxes will reflect the age-level of the game: green (from 3 years old on), blue (from 4 years old on), yellow (from 5 years old on) or red (from 6 years old on). The games will still feature the same excellent wooden figures from Selecta.
Pegasus Spiele has announced the first four games of this new series release:
- Viva Topo!
- The Ladybug’s Costume Party
- the nominated Zoowaboo
- Bouncing Bunnies
These new games from Pegasus Spiele will be presented at the Internationale Spieltage SPIEL in Essen from October 8 through October 11, 2015 at booth GA-31.
For more information on the new design and release of these children’s games, visit the announcement on Pegasus Spiele’s news page.
Portal Games continues to release quality games with its latest announcement: Five Families, an expansion for the award-winning Legacy: the Testament of Duke De Crecy, a game in which players are managing the affairs of their wealthy, aristocratic families in pre-revolutionary France.
Portal Games released the following today in a press release:
Portal Games announces Five Families – an expansion for the award winning Legacy: the Testament of Duke De Crecy
The first expansion for Legacy from designers Ignacy Trzewiczek and Michał Walczak.
Gliwice, Poland – August 31st, 2015. Today, Portal Games announced Five Families, the first expansion for the award winning Legacy: the Testament of Duke De Crecy. This expansion by designers Ignacy Trzewiczek and Michał Walczak adds a new dimension to Legacy through the introduction of unique Families.
Five Familes allows the players to trade new family members and traits to the other players in exchange for their Favor, a new resource. Favor tokens are used to purchase new, powerful actions. Each family is unique and the individual family members offer powerful abilities to the player willing to trade their Favor. Additionally, Five Families adds new Patrons with unique scoring options, Birth Events with more drama, and a Daisy Track for a new solitaire challenge.
“Legacy has always been a thematic game that provokes players into telling jokes, and trash talking each other – with marriages, and having kids with ugly or greedy husbands being a fuel for pure fun. With this expansion I wanted to add even more of this discussion – and that’s how I came up with the idea of players offering their family members to the other players during something like a matchmaking phase! It worked from the very first play test – laughs, funny comments and each player praising his family members as a best choice for a husband or wife. This is hilarious phase and adds so much interaction and table talk to the base game!” says designer Ignacy Trzewiczek.
Legacy the Testament of Duke De Crecy is for 1 to 4 players, ages 10 or older and takes approximately 60-90 minutes to play. Five Families is an expansion which requires the base game to play. The expansion includes 105 cards, an action board, 60 Favor tokens, and a rulebook. Five Families will debut in October at Essen Spiel and will be in Europe retail distribution in October. Distribution in USA will begin in December. MSRP will be $25. For more information you can visit the Five Families page on our website at http://portalgames.pl/new_en/all-game-list/five-families/

Fantasy Flight Games released the hit adventure board game Runebound in 2004, then followed it up with a second, revised edition in 2005. Now, ten years later, FFG has announced a fresh, new release of Runebound in its third edition!
In this new edition of Runebound, experienced players will discover familiar characters and villains from the previous versions of the game, as well as some familiar game design and mechanisms, such as terrain dice for movement. However, this version of Runebound will hit players as a breath of fresh air, as many new innovative changes have been implemented.
One such change from the previous versions in the method of engaging in combat. Instead of using 10-sided dice in combat, players will cast or flip combat tokens to the table and take turns spending them to attack, shield from attack, affect their opponent’s tokens, or stack them for more power. Surge abilities are also possible by spending surges printed on the tokens.
As in previous versions of the game, players will begin with an adventurer of humble status and must upgrade their hero throughout their adventurers. They can do this by purchasing upgrades at the four Free Cities of Terrinoth and battling the minions of Margath the Dragonlord or Vorakesh the necromancer.
Runebound is a game for 2-4 players ages 14 and up and plays in 120-180 minutes. It is scheduled for release in the fourth quarter of 2015. For more information on this new release of Runebound in its third edition, visit the game’s pages at FFG’s website here.
Business Insider published an article this week announcing a new movie in the works…and with this title for the article:
If you weren’t convinced Hollywood has run out of ideas — here’s your proof.
It appears that Hasbro and Lionsgate are joining forces to bring to captivated audiences everywhere the latest film based on a board game intellectual property–arguably, THE board game IP.
In summary, here is the plot of the Monopoly Movie:
The story centers on a boy from Baltic Avenue who uses both Chance and Community in a quest to make his fortune, taking him on a fun, adventure-filled journey. It’s about making your own luck, what makes you truly rich and, of course, avoiding Jail time!
The movie concept has been discussed since 2008, and now it appears that Andrew Niccol (“The Truman Show”) will be handling the screenplay. No release date has yet been announced for the film.
It could be hoped that if we are to have a movie based on the famous Monopoly board game, they can deliver a cinematic delight at least on par with the classic “Clue” movie.
We shall see.

Ystari Games has officially announced that their new game, Starfighter, will be in stores on June 27th. Starfighter is a quick (30 minutes) 2-player card game of space combat.
Take part in the Third Solar War: groups with divergent interests face each other for supremacy in space, or for a mineral-rich hunk of rock.
In 2115, war is a show. Gigantic cruisers fight through interposed fighters whose pilots are true super-media-exposed heroes. These are the Starfighters!
In the game, each player is trying to damage the enemy’s Cruiser and cause its surrender. The game is played over a series of rounds with three phases: Reinforcements (draw Squadron cards), Deployment (play cards onto your Cruiser board), and Combat. The Squadron cards have upper and lower sections – the upper sections get covered up as other cards are played over them, but only visible sections of the cards can be used for combat. Cards also have effects when they’re played, such as movement, pivoting (switching upper and lower sections of the card), and destroying cards. During combat, players can move their entire Cruiser board, and it shifts relative to the other player’s board, so Squadron cards are constantly fighting against different sectors!
There are three different modes of play: Training, Skirmish, and Total War. Check out the rules on the game page at Ystari’s website to learn more about the gameplay.
Starfighter sounds pretty unique – the movement of the entire player board and the double sided cards sound like it will add a lot of strategy to a simple-to-learn game. See the announcement for the release here.
The classic fantasy epic Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien can be experienced in a very immersive way in Ares Games’ War of the Ring, an epic board game in which players can play through Tolkien’s grand saga as they take on the roles of either the Free People of Middle Earth or The Shadow (forces of Sauron). To date, War of the Ring has had only one smaller expansion, Lords of Middle Earth, but now Ares Games has announced a second expansion for the game, Warriors of Middle Earth.
In the core game, many additional characters appear other than the Free Peoples and the armies of the Shadow, but have not been “playable.” Now, this new expansion will include Ents, Dead Men of Dunharrow, Great Eagles of the Misty Mountains, Corsairs of Umbar, Wild Hilmen from Dunland, and Giant Spiders. Each of these character and creature groups will feature miniatures and special abilities.
In Warriors of Middle Earth, new game mechanisms will be introduced to the game, including Faction Dice and Faction Events. As in the core game and first expansion, Warriors of Middle Earth will be illustrated by John Howe. This new expansion is set for release in the Q4 of 2015, in or around November.
