Stronghold Games is starting 2019 off with a bang, and has announced 5 new games coming soon in the new year.
Ganz Schon Clever is a fantastic (BGG #295) roll and write game from wunderkind designer Wolfgang Warsch, which took the gaming world by storm last year. In Clever, 1-4 players roll dice in order to fill in spaces from 5 different tracks. Each track has checkpoints which allow bonus fills on neighboring tracks, allowing for some amazing combination moves. Ganz Schon Clever was nominated for the 2018 Kennerspiel des Jahres award, but unfortunately for Mr. Warsch, of the 3 (!) nominated games he designed, the only win that year was Quacks of Quedlinburg. The new english version coming from Stronghold Games will be called That’s Pretty Clever, and is expected to release in April 2019.
CO2 (2012) is a well regarded (BGG #585) heavy worker placement game from designer Vital Lacerda (The Gallerist, Vinhos, Lisboa), and Stronghold is bringing the remastered CO2: Second Chance to stores this March. 1-4 players take on the role of corporations trying to make the planet a greener place, correcting the pollution made standard in the 1970s. The second edition includes a new rulebook and iconography, a more balanced gameplay, a new events deck, and upgraded wooden components. Stronghold has stated that this edition will be printed once, then not reprinted, so get it while it is available.
Astro Drive is a “fast paced card driven spaceship racing game” from designers Mikko Punakallio (Dokmus) and Max Wikström (Space Freaks). 2-4 Players secretly pick movement cards from their hands, then simultaneously reveal. The cards have an initiative number, determining who moves first, movement points, compelling their ship to move forward, and control points, allowing side to side wiggle. Players also have a limited number of energy cubes, which can be spent for either 2 extra movement or control points. Players race over map tiles, avoiding crashing into obstacles, until someone crosses the finish line. Expect Astro Drive in stores in April 2019.
The Violet Morass is a new expansion for the skirmish board game Space Freaks (2017). In Space Freaks, 2-4 players combine different body parts to create the perfect team of freaks, then lead them into the arena for battle. The Violet Morass adds 2 new arenas, the perilous waters of the planet Azorax 5, multiple new head and body parts, as well as some terrifying equipment. The Violet Morass is tentatively scheduled for an April release.
Another anticipated expansion is the Meteo Expansion for the card driven bicycle racing game Flamme Rouge. Flamme Rouge has 2-4 players controlling the speed of their 2 person team up and down hills and around bends, trying to manage cards and jockey for position most efficiently. Meteo adds weather and wind management into the mix, adding more options into this strategic racing game. The Meteo Expansion for Flamme Rouge is expected in stores February 2019.
Coming this February from Shinobi 7, is Sonic the Hedgehog Battle Racers!
Available as a single player game as well as 2 and up, players will choose a racer, route and then race to the finish line, trying to avoid each other and varying obstacle. Players use speed, abilities and special powers to collect rings along the way. The track changes with every race, making the experience different each time.
The base board game comes with 64 agility cards, 50 ring tokens, 40 Badnik tokens, 15 rock tokens, 10 track sections, 4 miniatures, 4 racer profiles and 4 speed tokens. It is for ages 9 and up with a playing time of 30-60 minutes.
A boss expansion, Dr. Eggman, will be available, which adds his miniature and boss cards, as well as new track sections. In March, the boss expansion, Shadow, will also be available, adding his miniature, boss cards and new track sections, as well as breakaway platforms.
Little Monster That Came For Lunch And Stayed For Tea is a new game coming from Strawberry Studio, designers Robin Lees and Steve Mackenzie (Beyond Baker Street), and artist Anna Kędzior. Little Monster is a light racing game, in which 2-4 players each use cards to feed their 2 strange, hungry monsters, moving them to the end of the lunch table first. Players either draw or play cards on their turn, hoping to combo their skills and abilities. Easy to teach, Little Monster comes with 14 unique monsters, each with special skills, and plays in about 20 minutes. Read more about Little Monster on Strawberry Studio’s website, and look for the game in stores in late November 2018.
From This and That Games, the publishers of Comrades and Patriots, comes your daily dose of adorable – Sea Turtle Scurry is their newest game come to Kickstarter.
Sea Turtle Scurry is a game of baby sea turtle racing, from the nest to the ocean. Players lay tiles, play cards, and even hitch a ride on each other on the way to their new home!
Players use their tiles to create a path for the turtles to travel, choosing a side and facing to help their turtle and hinder their opponents. Cards are used as actions or to scurry and forgo a card’s benefit to charge across spaces after incurring penalties for terrain. Turtles can even crawl on another’s back and hitch a ride, unless the ridden turtle crawls onto a rock, which can dampen any hitchhiker’s plans. The game is educationally conscious, as each card features facts about the endangered animals, and made lovingly to spread awareness of one of the most precious marine species. Be sure to check out their Kickstarter on June 7th, going on until June 28th 2016, for more information.
Laboratory Games, publishers of the popular microgame Province, have now brought their newest game to Kickstarter. EJiPT is a fast and easy racing game where players attempt to be the first to unlock the secrets of an ancient tomb. It plays 2-4 players in about 15 minutes.
EJiPT is easy to learn and plays fast. Players begin with three ankh tokens which are used to unlock the treasure room. On your turn, you’ll roll a four sided die, you can then move up to as many spaces as the die roll. Seems easy enough, but the pharaoh’s tomb is filled with traps! Each space of the tomb causes the halls to shift and spin and will either move you one step closer to untold riches or towards defeat. Once you’ve returned your ankhs to their rightful places, you can claim the treasure within… if your opponents don’t get there first!
EJiPT has no in game language dependence! If you’ve translated the rules into another language, let us know!

Originally launched in 2008 the award winning Snow Tails returns! Renegade Game Studios has obtained the rights to this fast paced sled racing game and is updating it with brand new artwork from artist Beth Sobel.
Snow Tails includes a modular track which allows for a multitude of courses to be created. As you play cards while racing along these courses you will have to take care not to lose control of your sled because for every dent you take you hand-size shrinks.
“It’s one of the best racing games we’ve ever played and are really excited to be able to make it available again,” says Renegade President Scott Gaeta.
Look for Snow Tails to be available in stores August of this year.
