Z-Man Games has previously announced the upcoming release of another game set in the Merchants & Marauders universe, Merchants & Marauders: Broadsides. This new stand-alone game carries the same high-adventure theme set in the Caribbean during the age of piracy, but is far removed from the pick-up-and-deliver adventure that was its predecessor. Merchants & Marauders: Broadsides brings ship-to-ship combat in the form of a hand-management and worker placement card game, and players will be playing combos of cards such as pairs, straights, and flushes to fire the various weapons their ship is equipped with.

Z-man has released an article that outlines these weapons and details their strengths, weaknesses, and basic strategies of use. In summary, here are the the three types of weapons your ship can equip:
- The 18-Pounder: a balanced, all-purpose cannon that can deal damage via a wide range of effectiveness
- The Long Nine: a focused and powerful weapon that is difficult to aim, but when it hits it deals damage of the greatest severity
- The Carronade: a lower-powered weapon that is easy to hit with but deals damage at a lower level
Players will need to load these weapons with a variety of shot types, including Solid Shots (for damaging planks), Chain Shots (for crushing enemy sails), and Canister Shot (for devastating enemy crew).
Merchants & Marauders: Broadsides is set for a fall 2016 release. For more information on how these weapons affect game play, check out the article in full on Z-Man’s website.
Golden Age Games, a relatively new publisher from the Netherlands, is currently running a Kickstarter project to fund a game that has been 8 years in the making: Captains of the Golden Age. This game boasts a 0% luck factor and is themed around the golden age of piracy and shipping, where players are working to trade the most pepper (worth more than gold in this setting) in the fictional East Indies.
Captains of the Golden Age is set in a fictional ‘East-Indies’ where pepper is worth more than gold. Four competitive captains seek to control the Mighty Trading Company. You sail around the globe in search of cargo to upgrade your precious ship. Add sails to travel far and wide, expand your cargo-hold to earn and carry more cargo, upgrade and fire your cannons to damage other ships, or board other ships with your crew to steal their cargo! Wherever you go and whatever you choose; the captain who controls the pepper trade controls the Mighty Trading Company!
The game features a circular game board that represents the map of seas and islands through which players are adventuring. Each turn is made up of the following steps:
SAIL: Move your ship across the board based on the amount of sails you have on your ship.
LOAD: Load cargo depending on the size of your cargo-hold.
TRADE: In the trade phase you may trade cargo, buy shares for pepper in the Republic, and upgrade and repair your ship. When you buy your 4th share of pepper you win the game!
COMBAT: If you sail to a tile with the ship of another captain on it, you may decide to attack with your cannons or board with your crew.
CARDS: Earn reinforcement cards.
Captains of the Golden Age is for 2-4 players ages 11 and up and plays in 1-3 hours. For more information on this project, visit the Kickstarter page.
Treasures of all types! But the hard part is not capturing the ship’s bounty, but dividing it fairly to the pirates! To the clever go the spoils in a new game of piracy and plunder from Mayfair Games!
Mayfair Games announces a new game from designer Alexander Cobian entitled Booty! In this pirate-themed card game, players will begin each round by revealing treasure cards with varying types of booty such as immediate points, cards that cancel other cards, and hidden items to keep all the pirate players guessing. Each round, the Quartermaster role moves from player to player, whose job it is to divide the treasures into shares. The Quartermaster also selects the order of picking treasures in the next round. Balancing what you need, what others might want, and trying to get a little extra into your treasure pile is the key to success!
The game also includes building cards that provide special benefits and allow for unique game experiences every time you play. A copy of the game will include:
- 108 cards
- 54 player flag tiles (9 of each color)
- 6 player turn order tiles
- 6 turn selection tiles
- 4 stock market markers
- 1 quartermaster token
- 1 Quartermaster token
- 5 islands tiles
- 12 legacy tiles
- 1 rulebook
Booty! is for 2-6 players ages 10 and up and plays in about 60 minutes. Booty! is scheduled for release in August of 2015.
