Renegade Game Studios and Dire Wolf Digital have announced their compilation project, Eternal: Chronicle of the Throne. Chronicles of the Throne by designer Paul Dennen, is a combination deck building game and strategy card battler which could only have been created by the combined efforts of these two studios. In the game, 2-4 players will “experience fast-paced gameplay as they attack, block, and summon creatures in back and forth CCG-style combat.”

Renegade Game Studios and designer Paul Dennen, are the brains behind the immensely popular games Clank! A Deck Building Adventure and Clank! In! Space! Both of the Clank! games managed to take deck building to a new level, using it as a mechanism in a fantasy board game. Much like deck builders Dominion and Legendary, players can use symbols on their cards to move on the board, buy new cards, or fight monsters. However, the price for many played cards is noise – “CLANK!”, which draws the ire of the dragon below. Players need to judge how deep to delve, trying to collect better and better artifacts, while avoiding becoming the increasingly angry dragon’s wrath.

Dire Wolf Digital is the design team behind Eternal, a popular digital CCG on iOS, Android and Steam. Eternal takes place in a world “where six-guns and sorcery combine”. Much like the heralded Hearthstone and Magic the Gathering Arena, in Eternal players collect cards and construct digital decks for head to head battle. Players use power cards to summon units and cast spells, trying to dominate each other. Eternal: Chronicles of the Throne takes place in this fantastical world, populated by all the art from the digital card game.

Eternal: Chronicles of the Throne should be coming to stores in time for GenCon, in August 2019. For more information about the game, check out the dedicated webpages for the game from Dire Wolf Digital and Renegade Studios.

At the recent PAX Unplugged convention, Dire Wolf Digital announced a new Clank! game in partnership with Penny Arcade, Clank! Legacy: Acquisitions Incorporated, coming in Fall 2019. Clank! A Deck Building Adventure by designer Paul Dennen uses deck building mechanics of gain money, buy cards, fight foes, but added movement in a dungeon to the mix. Players had to run quickly through the depths, collect an artifact, then make their way back to the surface, all while trying not to make enough noise (CLANK) to invoke the ire of the beast. Clank! has won several awards, has a spider expansion, a mummy’s tomb expansion, and a version in space, yet still remains at a very respectable #61 in the boardgamegeek top 100. Now the promise of adding legacy elements to this great game is sure to have fans excited. Acquisitions Incorporated, which started in 2008 with the simple idea of “friends having fun playing Dungeons & Dragons”, has become a 20 year podcast and IP with a strong following.

From the press release – “Found your own franchise of the legendary adventuring company Acquisitions Incorporated, and shepherd your fledgling treasure-hunters to immortal corporate glory over the course of multiple games.”

Renegade Game Studios have announced an expansion for Clank! In! Space! where Lord Eradikus continues to be opposed by small pockets of resistance. The evil, cyborg isn’t having any of it and plots to wipe out all resistance with one, grand wicked scheme. Clank! In! Space! Apocalypse! supports 2-4 players, aged 13+, and will play in roughly 60 minutes. It’s designed by Paul Dennen with art by Rayph Beisner.

“The evil Lord Eradikus has all but conquered the galaxy and is now on a victory lap across the sector in his flagship, Eradikus Prime. He may rule with an iron grip, but his most prized artifacts are about to slip through his cyborg claws. You and your fellow thieves have challenged each other to sneak aboard his ship, hack your way into its command module, and steal from him.”

“Along the way, you’ll recruit allies and snatch up extra loot. But one false step and — Clank! Careless noise draws the attention of Lord Eradikus. Hacking into his command module and stealing his artifacts increases his rage. You’d better hope your friends are louder than you are if you want to make it to an escape pod and get out alive…” [source]

Clank! In! Space! is built on the same game system as Clank!: A Deck-Building Adventure. Players build a personal deck of cards while playing the game and these cards allow them to move through the spaceship, attack things, and acquire new cards. Running around the ship doing these things makes noise which attracts Lord Eradikus and his attention brings the players doom.

The game is available for pre-order on the Renegade Games website for pickup at GenCon or Essen.

Renegade Games has announced a stand alone Clank! game set not that far from the world of the original. Clank! In! Space!, designed by Paul Dennen, takes the anxiety inducing work trying not to make noise to a whole new challenging setting – an alien starship.

(the Original) Clank!

The Clank! base game had players attempting to sneak into an angry dragon’s mountain lair to steal artifacts using push-your-luck and deck-building mechanics. The deeper the delve the more valuable loot, but the more likely players would be to create noise which would attract the attention of the dragon. Acquire cards for your deck and watch your thievish abilities grow. Noisy players can get eliminated, and you only enjoy your treasures if you make it out of the depths alive! Released October 2016, less than a year ago, Clank! was immediately expanded with Clank! Sunken Treasures which took players underwater with a similar theme and mechanics.

The Dice Tower top 10 list has featured Clank twice already:

  • The Top 10 deck/pool building list featured Clank! with Tom ranking it 6th and The People ranking it 4th
  • The Best of 10 2016 list had Erik ranking Clank! 6th
