Pathfinder

I had the great pleasure to sit down and speak with Mike Selinker, the developer of such board game classics as Betrayal at House on the Hill, Pathfinder the Adventure Card Game, and my personal favorite, Gloria Mundi. Interestingly, Mike noted that he declined to be involved in the creation of Betrayal at Baldur’s Gate, so that he could play the game without knowing the outcome of all the stories, a luxury he never had with House on the Hill. However board games are just the tip of the iceberg, as Mike is equally known for his work in puzzles, having contributed extensively to Games Magazine and international puzzle competitions.

In 2013, Mike and his company Lone Shark Games Kickstarted Maze of Games, a massive puzzle book in novel form that was in development for 18 years. Maze of Games followed the story of Colleen and Samuel Quaice, siblings in 1897 trapped within a series of deadly puzzles by a skeletal entity called the Gatekeeper. Just to make things worse, these puzzles are presented out of order, so putting the evolving story of the children in order is an essential part of the grand overlying solution. A successful Kickstarter for the audiobook read by Wil Wheaton followed in 2014. 5+ years have passed, and it appeared the book had still not been fully solved, so the team at Lone Shark started preparing a Kickstarter to publish an official solution guide. With only weeks to go until the KS was due to launch, a surprise email revealed that a team of 13 people had finally found the answer. Lone Shark quickly reformatted the Kickstarter, excited that the puzzle was still inspiring people so many years later.

The Maze of Games Omnibus has just launched on Kickstarter and includes not only the original Maze of Games novel, but also The Keymaster’s Tome, a solution guide handwritten by the protagonists, audiobook versions of the Theseus Guide to the Final Maze, and a full radio drama The Gatekeeper’s Variety Hour, both with the voice talent of Wil Wheaton. Finally, the team included a special escape room announcement. Mike and the team at Lone Shark have often envisioned a real world version of the Maze of Games, and such a thing has come to reality thanks to Epic Team Adventures in Seattle.

The Kickstarter for Maze of Games Omnibus continues through April 3, and the books are scheduled to be released in June 2019. For more details on the books, the audiobooks, and the escape room, check the Kickstarter page here.

Those of you lucky enough to attend GenCon 50 know full well that it was a shopping extravaganza full of hot products that sold quickly. Paizo, Inc. has announced that Starfinder, the space based followup to the role-playing staple Pathfinder, was in fact the fastest selling product they have ever released. The core Starfinder book sold out in 6 hours, selling more copies than any other Paizo product, during all 4 days of previous years’ conventions. The entire Starfinder line is currently back-ordered, but stocks are expected to come back in October 2017.

Look for accessory products for Starfinder, such as miniatures from Ninja Division, and even an official soundtrack from Syrinscape.

pathfinder digital

The digital implementation of the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game has finally arrived for tablet devices and is titled Pathfinder Adventures.

Pathfinder Adventures is essentially a role-playing game in card form featuring leveling up, a long campaign and everything else you’d expect. Each character is represented by a deck of cards which you can customize and includes equipment, weapons, armor, etc – additionally, each card represents your character’s life points, when your deck is empty you are defeated.

The game is a free download that comes with a tutorial mission and a 3-part taster mission. Additional scenarios, characters and treasure chests are purchasable with cash or gold that you earn through playing.

The game is very polished with excellent graphics and nice transition scenes. Currently only solo and pass & play modes are available but online play has been mentioned and may appear later.

Tabletop roleplaying games your thing? How about card games based on a popular RPG? Well Paizo has you covered.

At GAMA Trade Show Paizo, the company responsible for the popular fantasy RPG Pathfinder, revealed more of its plans for its Pathfinder Battles miniatures lines. According to Paizo:

The world of Pathfinder comes to life on your tabletop with Pathfinder Battles, an ongoing line of prepainted plastic miniatures produced in cooperation with WizKids, Inc. Drawn from the award-winning illustrations of the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game and produced with the highest-quality standards in the miniature business, Pathfinder Battles fantasy miniatures set a new standard for hassle-free tabletop gaming!

With the most recent release named Iconic Heroes this partnership is not only putting out new sculpts of some of the most familiar faces from their Pathfinder universe for use in the RPG, they are also including exclusive “Boon” cards to be used with the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game (PACG) series. The first set includes six miniatures (with the same amount of cards for PACG) and is available now. Sets #2 and #3 of the Iconic Heroes series are due in April 2015.

Speaking of Pathfinder Adventure Card Game, Paizo announced the third core set at GAMA. This set is titled Wrath of the Righteous and will include:

  • More than 500 cards featuring a new set of boons for your characters to collect, and never before seen monsters and barriers of a decidedly abyssal nature.

  • 7 character classes, including the all-new arcanist, cavalier, inquisitor, and summoner.

  • The Worldwound Incursion Adventure Deck, a 110-card deck that begins the Wrath of the Righteous Adventure Path.

  • A complete set of 6 polyhedral dice, including the first d20 in the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game.

You hear that, the series noted for not including the fabled d20 has brought one in! If the trend of the past two releases hold true, expect to see a Gen Con 2015 release for this product.

Good job Paizo for bridging that small gap between the RPGer and the boardgamer!
