Munchkin

For fans of Munchkin, Dungeon or both is a new game on Kickstarter!

Munchkin Dungeon, from CMON and designed by Andrea Chiarvesio and Eric M. Lang for 2-5 players, is a press-your-luck game where players explore the dungeons’ various rooms, fight monsters and overcomes their friend’s tricks to get the best treasure.

The base game, for ages 14 and up with a playtime of 60-90 minutes, comes with 7 Munchkin miniatures, 5 level 2 monster miniatures, 5 level 3 monster miniatures, 2 boss miniatures, hero dashboards, counter bases, dice and 152 game cards. The Kickstarter exclusive also includes 5 other Munchkin characters, 5 other monsters and plastic fame markers.

An advanced pledge gets an expansion, 4 more Munchkin figures, 3 more level 2 monster figures and 3 more level 3 monster figures, as well as extra player dashboards, more game cards and tokens and more.

There are also optional buys with Munchkin Dungeon Cthulhu (because why not?) and extra dice.

USAopoly has announced Munchkin Harry Potter Deluxe, a joint effort with Steve Jackson Games, bringing classic Munchkin game play into the magical world of Harry Potter. Players choose whether to be in houses Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw, then dungeon crawl their way to level 10 collecting items and abilities along the way. Munchkin Harry Potter solemnly swears to retain the take-that nature of a classic Munchkin game, allowing players to cast spells, drink potions, or give each other detention. Munchkin Harry Potter comes with 92 Door Cards, 76 Treasure Cards, 6 double sided House Cards (allowing more than one player to be in a specific house), 12 player standees, a custom die, game board and rules. For more information, check out the game web page at USAopoly.

Steve Jackson Games has announced in their latest newsletter the first expansion to Munchkin Warhammer 40,000Faith and Firepower.  The original gave us Munchkin-esque card game insight into several factions from the iconic miniatures game, including Ultramarines, Necron, Aeldari, Ork, Death Guard and Tyranid. The new expansion adds two more factions to the mix, the Sisters of Battle and the T’au. The new expansion, like the original, is being designed by Andrew Hackard and features classic Munchkin art by John Kovalic. Munchkin Warhammer 40,000: Faith and Firepower will contain 112 new cards, and should be available in Spring 2019.

Coming soon to a game store near you, is Munchkin Warhammer 40,000, from Steve Jackson Games and Games Workshop.

Munchkin line editor Andrw Hackard and illustrated by Munchkin artist John Kovalic team up with Games Workshop to produce the 2019 deluxe-format game that will feature a level tracker board, character standies and 168 cards.

Players will take their army – Ultramarine, Necron, Aeldari, Ork, Death Guard or Tyranid – and make a pilgrimage to Holy Terra. Weapons like a lasblaster and critters like Sloppy Bilepiper will be found along the way.

Munchkin Warhammer is combinable with all of the Munchkin games, so players can mix and match to their heart’s delight.

“I have never seen a game store without a Warhammer 40,000 section,” said Hackard. “It’s a pleasure to get to play around in a setting that has such a rich history and so many dedicated fans around the world!”

Two 112-card expansions for the edition are planned, also to launch in 2019.

Back in December we reported on a newly formed partnership between Steve Jackson Games and CMON in order for CMON to produce Munchkin themed board games.  Well now we have seen the announcement of the first fruits of that labor, and that is Munchkin Dungeon.  This is going to be a dungeon crawl board game set in the Munchkin universe, featuring the same classic Munchkin art, and includes a healthy dose of take that just like the other Munchkin games.  Art will be handled by Munchkin veteran John Kovalic, and the design of the game will be in the talented hands of Eric M. Lang and Andrea Chiarvesio.  In the game you will be exploring the dungeon and trying to gain the most treasure and levels, but you will have to take risks because whenever you flee you have to take shame which counts against you.  You will also have plenty of opportunities to try and through your fellow players under the bus so betrayal will be sudden and inevitable.  The person who has the most combined levels and treasure at the end will be the winner.

Look for this game to hit Kickstarter in 2019 and feature lots of Munchkin jokes, a pile of detailed minis (this IS CMON afterall), and hopefully lots of fun.  You can find out more on CMON’s website and follow their Facebook page for more updates.

Steve Jackson Games have announced a spin on a classic game, a new edition of a veteran game, a classic reprint, and a new dexterity game.

Munchkin Side Quests

Munchkin Side Quests adds a short detour from killing monsters and betraying friends with a 30-card expansion that can be added to any Munchkin game. Players can get secret, in-game goals that they can complete to cash in for a reward and potentially provide a new way to win the game. It’s designed by Andrew Hackard and illustrated by Ian McGinty.

Illuminati

Illuminati has been Steve Jackson’s signature title since winning the Origins Award in 1982 for the Best Science Fiction Boardgame. It’s getting an update and face lift in a second edition along with a graphical revamp by Lar DeSouza.

“Two to six players compete to take control of groups ranging from the FBI and CIA to the Dentists, increasing their wealth and power for further takeovers, until one rules supreme. Every player has different victory conditions! No ploy is too devious, no stratagem too low, as you scheme your way to victory.” [source]

Blob Lobber

In Blob Lobber, 2-4 players take turns flinging Blob cards until a Bomb card lands on top of the Blobs. This allows the player to claim all enemy Blobs beneath it. Blob Lobber is designed by Brett Myers, and developed by Sam Mitschke and Randy Scheunemann.

SPANC

SPANC, illustrated by Phil Foglio, will be back in print in time for it’s 10th anniversary. Players are Space Pirate Amazon Ninja Catgirls who enjoy a life of larceny and mayhem as they embark on Capers. The galaxy will throw Friendly Guard Puppies, Fiendish Death Traps, and a host of other nasties at the players as they pick up Toys, grab more Loot than anyone else, and watch out for other catgirls who want to steal what they have.

Steve Jackson Games has given Ultra PRO International exclusive rights to produce Munchkin and Munchkin: Collectible Card Game (CCG) accessories. This includes playmats, card sleeves, deck boxes, albums, binders, card pages, zippered gaming cases, dice bags, life counters, dice, and tokens . However, only playmats, Deck Boxes, and Deck Protector sleeves are expected this year.

Ultra PRO have also agreed to make limited-run prizes available for the Munchkin: CCG organized play events. You can find more information on the Steve Jackson Games news site.

Steve Jackson Games continues to roll out with the Munchkin releases, but they will soon be releasing quite a different game as well.  First up are two releases coming in August for the Munchkin CCG, Fashion Furious booster packs and Phat Packs.  Fashion Furious is the latest set for the Munchkin CCG and will feature lots of new cards to use in your decks, most likely with a focus on accessories for your hero.  The Phat Pack is a collection of booster packs to help you expand your choices even faster.  In the pack you will get three boosters from the core set, one from Desolation of Blarg set, one from the Fashion Furious set, and two additional cards unique to the Phat Pack.  These unique cards are randomly picked out of a selection of 12 and are only available in the Phat Packs.  Look for these sets on store shelves in August to help feed your Munchkin CCG needs.

Next we have two expansions for the standard Munchkin game in the form of Fowl Play and Side Quests.  Fowl Play, illustrated by the talented John Kovalic, add a bunch of new cards to the Munchkin game, all themed around fowl like ducks, chickens, and turkeys.  Expect the bird puns to start flowing when this pack is released in August of this year.  Munchkin Side Quests on the other hand doesn’t add treasure or doors cards, but adds a whole new deck of cards called side quests.  These quests have you trying to achieve a specific goal, and when completed allows you a special bonus.  These goals also change things up because if you complete three quests, the next monster you defeat wins you the game, no matter what level you are.  How will adding alternate victory conditions mess with the game?  We won’t know until the expansion releases in the fall of this year.

Last on the list is a game that might be odd coming from the house of Munchkin, and that is a reprint of Triplanetary.  Triplanetary is a hex and counter style game where you are battling it out in space in ship to ship combat.  One thing that is unique about this game is that it takes into account that you are in space when you are moving, meaning that after you accelerate, you keep going that speed until you accelerate in a different direction.  This can make things interesting as if your engines get disabled, you will keep moving in the direction you last accelerated.  Rules remain largely unchanged and this edition brings the game back into print after being out of print for over 20 years.  Look for this new edition of the game in stores in August.
