Mice and Mystics

Fans of heroic rodent campaign games, rejoice! Plaid Hat Games has announced that ‘Aftermath,’ the latest entry in the Adventure Book Game series, is now available for pre-order.

Designed by Stuffed Fables and Mice and Mystics designer Jerry Hawthorne, Aftermath is set in a world where humans have mysteriously vanished, leaving common animals like mice, hamsters, guinea pigs, and other small creatures to inherit the Earth. Across 27 story-driven mission, Players will take on the role of one of these animals and must explore suburban ruins in order to scavenge for food and other resources to provide for their colony while also being on guard against predators.

The game promises dynamic card play that will allow players to complete a wide variety of actions and also will include a mechanic for players to choose whether to use combat or diplomacy to resolve various threats. Finally, similar to Dead of Winter, each player will have a personal goal to accomplish in addition to the main objective.

The list of contents, pre-order and other information about this upcoming release can be found here.

Plaid Hat Games has announced Battlelands, a fast and furious card game for 3-5 players designed by Jerry Hawthorne (Mice & Mystics) and Andrea Mezzotero (Crystal Clans).  In Battlelands, players send fighters to seize key locations, collect resources, or recruit more fighters.  There are five factions to play – Junkers, Scaled Ones, Bighted, Hoodies, and the Nocturne – each with their own special abilities.  The player who secures enough resources is the winner.  Like Mice and Mystics, Battlelands features factions made up of mice, rats, lizards and moles, but the game is set in a modern world in which the human beings have vanished. This will be the same world used in another game by Jerry Hawthorn coming out later this year, Aftermath.   Little is known about Aftermath at this time other than it will be an Adventure Book game like Mice and Mystics but set in a modern post-human world.

Look for Battlelands at your friendly local game store in July, 2019.

In addition to fighting minions, each page of the storybook offers numerous points of interest, charming characters to interact or trade with, as well as many unusual challenges. And each page is but one chapter that folds into a branching, overarching story with a multitude of items and a special discovery deck full of surprises.

Driven By Dice

On a players turn, they will draw 5 dice from a bag. The colors of the dice will determine what actions a player can take. White dice can re-stuff the stuffed heroes. Red dice and green dice perform melee and ranged attacks respectively. Yellow dice will allow for searching, blue dice will allow for special actions, and finally purple dice act as wild dice. Dice will help move items, use items and contribute to unique group tasks. Dice can even be stored for later to make stronger actions or multiple activations on a single turn.

A truly cooperative game, players can share dice or share stuffing, which acts as health in the game. As black dice are drawn minions emerge and attack, resetting the bag at the same time.

ashes

Big announcement from Plaid Hat Games today, Ashes: Rise of the Phoenixborn will be going up for pre-order on April 9th. Plaid Hat Games is the publisher that brought us exciting titles like Summoner Wars, Mice and Mystics, and last year’s huge hit Dead of Winter. They look like they may have another hit on their hands with Ashes: Rise of the Phoenixborn designed by Isaac Vega who also designed BioShock Infinite: The Siege of Columbia and was a co-designer of Dead of Winter.

Ashes: Rise of the Phoenixborn is an expandable card game that will allow 2-4 players to take the role of one of the Phoenixborn, powerful demi-gods and magic wielders. Players will battle it out in a back and forth battle summoning terrifying creatures and loyal allies to become the last one standing. Player turns will be short and quick and will leave them with the chance to adjust as the round progresses. Players will be able to carefully choose their targets and easily react to their opponents actions. This should provide a unique game play experience with constant back and forth action. If that doesn’t sound exciting enough you can also say goodbye to mulligans because Ashes will allow players to choose their starting hand of 5 cards! Personally I don’t know of another game like this that gives you the choice of what cards to start with. This alone has my interest in the game at the maximum level.

ashes cards

Ashes will not be limited to just cards though, players will also have a dice pool that will give them the resources needed to fuel their magic and summon creatures as well as provide interesting powers on their own. Plus the dice pool should provide enough resources to start casting powerful spells immediately. Combined with the ability to choose your starting hand Ashes should deliver the all the thrills and excitement of a magic duel right from the start, no build up time needed.

If all that doesn’t have you ready to throw your money at the screen (don’t bother I tried it and it doesn’t work) then maybe this will help. There are three ways you can play Ashes: Rise of the Phoenixborn:

  • Choose a pre-built deck – Ashes will come with 6 pre-built decks and assigned dice, just jump right in and start playing.
  • Build a deck – choose from over 247 cards and 40 dice. Your build options will be nearly limitless.
  • Draft a deck – the drafting rules promise to allow players to build fun and interesting decks quickly.

You would think all that would be enough and Plaid Hat Games would stop there. But in their typical fashion they left nothing to be desired and had illustrator Fernanda Suarez create some absolutely stunning artwork for the game. Fernanda did a terrific job on last year’s Dead of Winter but she really outdid herself on Ashes. The box alone could be framed and the artwork on the cards is some of the best I’ve seen. She is truly making her name known in the board game world.

So if you, like me, think that a magic dueling card game with dice that has you immediately casting powerful spells while providing three ways to play, quick paced act/react turns, a truly innovative mechanic that has you choosing your starting hand, and mind-blowingly gorgeous  artwork sounds like your kind of game then keep an eye on your FLGS/OLGS and be ready to pre-order Ashes: Rise of the Phoenixborn. You’ll just have to get in line behind me.

If you are wondering what the booth of Plaid Hat Games, publisher of hit games like Dead of Winter, and Specter Ops, looks like, look no further.

In this first picture we can spot their highly anticipated SeaFall Legacy game. The game is based on the popular Legacy campaign game mode by Rob Daviau, which he first introduced in the popular game Risk Legacy. We can also spot the upcoming expansion for Mice and Mystics on left. What do you think that iPad screen is about? Perhaps a game that utilizes an app?

Next we have Zee Garcia chatting with Isaacs from Plaid Hat Games with the expansion for Mice and Mystics in the center. Look for this video interview soon.

Plaid Hat Games (publisher of Summoner Wars, Dead of Winter, Mice and Mystics, and many others) has been hinting around at a new game in the world of Mice and Mystics for awhile, and we are starting to see new information. @JayAhre tweeted a photo of what appears to be the box cover art revealing Tail Feathers as the title, Jerry Hawthorne (Mice and Mystics) as the designer, and the setting in the world of Mice and Mystics.

Although not much else is known at this time, Chad Hoverter (@DMGMiniFactory) tweeted several photos of some of the minis that will be found in the new release. You can check them out in the media section of his twitter page by clicking here.

Ansel

Plaid Hat Games has posted an in-depth look at of one of the new characters from their Mice and Mystics expansion, Downwood Tales. Ansel, the Warden, is a fierce protector of the Downwood and offers a slew of new weapons, armor and abilities that will aid Colin and associates on their quest.

jakobe playtest

Later this year, Plaid Hat Games will be releasing a new expansion for Mice and Mystics, Downwood Tales.  They have release a preview of one of the new characters, Jakobe, a quick-footed ranged attacker with very flavourful starting equipment: a returning boomerang, capable of hitting a target after missing on the first attack roll; and a leaf vest, which camouflages its wearer when on leafy trees and branches, thus increasing its armour bonus against ranged attackers.

Mice and Mystics: Downwood Tales is a box chock full of adventure and whimsy. New storybook, a pile of new miniatures, new heroes, new villains, new location tiles, new search deck items. Downwood Tales takes the adventure outdoors. Meet frogs, turtles, rabbits, the wise sages – the three blind mice, ride leaves like parachutes out of the trees and much, much, much more.

Downwood Tales gives you multiple playable characters, new villains, new minions, tiles, a ton of new mechanics, equipment, new story arcs and more! New to this big box expansion is the gecko named Jakobe and he’s not your run-of-the-mill gecko, he’s a smooth operator, a ranger of the forest, a lizard for hire who is leading our heroes through some of the greatest dangers they will ever face! With more fun elements then you can shake your tail at, Downwood Tales is the next exciting installment in the Mice & Mystics world!
