Long before Dice Masters was a twinkle in WizKids eye, Quarriors!, designed by Mike Elliot and Eric M. Lang, was the granddaddy of Dice Building games. It followed traditional releases in the form of big boxes for each expansion.
Dice Masters followed later but with a different release system in that you bought starter boxes and booster packs to expand your collection. They started dabbling in mini-releases such as Team Packs (like Spider-Man: Maximum Carnage and Dr Strange) and even released two big box standalone expansions for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Given the demand for the standalone expansions, Wizkids will be releasing the Avengers Infinity and Warhammer 40,000 Campaign Boxes.
According to Wizkids:
By shifting the focus of how players buy Dice Masters to non-blind product, we’re trying to lower the barrier to entry for fans who are interested in trying the game fresh or maybe exploring one of the IPs in the game they haven’t tried yet. [source]
The campaign boxes offer a lot of value. Each one has 48 different character cards which could be used to build hundreds of different thematic teams. There are also 10 Basic Action Cards to add variety. Adding in Team Packs will allow players to customize their teams even further. Campaign Boxes are able to store over 300 dice and their matching cards which means it can accommodate the basic set along with 10 added Team Packs.
Cards in the Campaign Boxes are also going to have their Max dice based on the game play but tournament play will be kept in mind when these are released instead of the stifling maximum previously designed into previous non-blind releases.
For more details on the upcoming Campaign Boxes check out the Wizkids Dice Masters page for details.
Marvel Dice Masters is a competitive game for 2 players where each player assumes the role of a mastermind directing their teams in battle against an opponent. The next release cycle of Marvel Dice Masters is expected January 2018 and includes both Draft Sets and Gravity Feeds and will mostly feature characters from The Mighty Thor comic book universe.
“New Asgardians, new villains, new weapons and new ways to play will have fans crossing the Bifrost to pick theirs up. In addition to Asgardian heroes and villains, you can count on versions of Spider-Man, The Hulk, and Iron Man that have never been seen before in Dice Masters!”
There will be more than 30 heroes and villains in the set which you can obtain from Foil Packs found in Gravity Feeds. Each Foil Pack has two cards, 2 matching dice, and a rules insert. Gravity Feeds have 90 Foil Packs.
The Draft Packs contain the following:
- 2 Basic Action Cards
- 12 Character or Action Cards
- 24 dice (2 to match each character or action card)
- 1 rules insert
A starter set is required in order to play the game in addition to this expansion. Characters are then immediately playable when obtained from a Foil Pack.
Wizkids has announced the latest expansion for Dice Masters, Marvel Dice Masters: Defenders Team Pack from Eric M. Lang and Mike Elliot. In this pack, the Defenders roster come to play, including the Hulk, Jessica Jones, Hellcat, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and more. This Team Pack can be paired with any Starter Set. For more information on the Defenders Team Pack, click here.
Dice Masters continues to grow and so Wizkids has to continue to find more heroes and villains to add to the series, so now they’ve brought in the X-Men from their early days. X-Men First Class will have 30 new characters in total, some will be from Professor X’s first team he put together to What If? characters and stories from the comic books. This set will be a booster only set so you will only be able to get these characters in the two cards boosters and not in any form of starter set. Planned release for this set is April of 2017, so look forward to expanding your collection yet again.
Deadpool seems to be all over everything geeky these days, and some places in the main stream culture, so of course games about him are coming too. Well, maybe not a game, but an expansion to a highly popular game and that is Marvel Dice Masters: Deadpool. This will bring our beloved anti-hero into the game along with other characters like Lady Deadpool, Dogpool, and Evil Deadpool. Also mentioned is that this set will bring in the “Inhumans, new characters from the Spider-Verse, and more characters from the pages of What If?“. So if you need a bit more sass and breaking of the 4th wall in you dice masters set, then look for these boosters on store shelves in November. For more information you can check out the Wizkids page for preview images of the new cards in the set.
Tabletop Gaming News (TGN) has an excellent preview of ‘The Others: 7 Sins‘ by Cool Mini Or Not and Guillotine Games. The Others is miniatures game designed by Eric Lang who brought us huge hits like Marvel Dice Masters and Arcadia Quest as well as the soon to be released Blood Rage. It is a horror board game that plays 2-5 players in a 1 vs. many format. One player will play one of the 7 Deadly Sins (Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, Envy, Pride) trying to trigger the Apocalypse while the other players are a team of supernatural heroes trying to save the day.
In this game, the 7 Sins have become hideous monsters incarnate. These monsters attempt to destroy cities and wreak havoc. In the game, players are the last bastion for humanity in these cities. Each “Sin” monster (of 7 different deadly sins) plays a little bit differently. One player plays as the monsters with the goal of corrupting the city, and advancing the doomsday tract. Other players attempt to dispel the contamination of evil, but the power they use has a corrupting factor.
In the article they start to delve into two of the sins Pride and Sloth as well as some of the minions you’ll see in the game. They have pictures of the models which are fantastically hideous and disgusting. While we’ve only gotten a glimpse of it the artwork in the game looks stunning as well and is done by Adrian Smith (lead designer/artist), Karl and Stefan Kopinski, Paolo Parente, Richard Wright, Jacopo Camagni, Miguel Coimbra and Georges Clarenko.
The Others will be on Kickstarter starting 9/10/2015 and if CMoN’s and Guillotine Games other projects are any indication it will be a huge hit. I for one am extremely excited about it and will most likely be backing it. The combination of horror theme, Eric Lang, and CMoN/Guillotine Games miniatures has me itching to hit the pledge button. Eric Lang is on fire with his amazing games that have come out recently and if there is one thing that both these companies do well it’s putting out great miniatures. Add in the fact that the horror theme is somewhat missing in my collection and I have always been a fan of the genre this should be a win/win/win for me.
If any of this has you interested head on over to TGN and check out the article here. This article is only one in a series of articles so while you’re there be sure to check out the rest of them if you have any interest in this game.
