Mansions of Madness: Second Edition

Fantasy Flight has announced a new expansion for Mansions of Madness, Path of the Serpent. In this expansion, the players are in the jungles of the Amazon, fighting for their lives as they face serpent creatures, explore the jungle and its many ruins and battle a serpent’s curse.

This expansion features 3 new scenarios as well as 4 new investigators. You can pre-order the expansion now or wait for it to appear on your FLGS shelves some time in the 4th quarter of 2019.

More information regarding the new expansion can be found here.

Fantasy Flight Games has announced Horrific Journeys, an expansion for Mansions of Madness: Second Edition.  The expansion content includes four new investigators, each with their own backstory, along with new figures, map tiles, locations, monsters, events and puzzles.  Horrific Journeys introduces three new scenarios:  10:50 to Arkham, Murder on the Stargazer Majestic, and Hidden Depths.

Fantasy Flight indicated that the Hidden Depths scenario introduces a new “agendas” mechanic to the game.

“When playing Hidden Depths with three or more investigators, you each receive an agenda card that you must keep secret from the rest of the team. Taking a twist on the Insane condition already present in Mansions of Madness, these cards foster the seeds of mistrust, potentially turning your teammates against one another and forcing you to become suspicious of the very people you would once trust with your life.”

The Horrific Journeys expansion is planned for release in the fourth quarter of 2018.  You can read the full announcement about the expansion here.

Asmodee Digital have announced their first, self-developed, third-person digital game inspired by Fantasy Flight Games’ board game, Mansions of Madness.

“The year is 1926. In a once sleepy town, evil is stirring. The town is plagued by murders, disappearances, and impossible claims of creatures spotted in the shadows that defy explanation. You are one of Arkham’s leading investigators, tasked with getting to the bottom of these strange occurrences by exploring the desolate halls and dark alleyways. And now, a new doorway to the mythos has opened before you. Do you dare to enter?” [source]

Mansions of Madness: Mother’s Embrace is developed by LuckyHammers (who are also developing the Terraforming Mars digital game) and published by Asmodee Digital. Players will be able to play as a team of investigators which include Jenny Barnes, Roland Banks, and Harvey Walters. The investigators will explore the mansion and uncover its dark secrets while also battling eldritch forces, traps, and horrors which threaten the sanity, and lives, of the team.

Mansions of Madness: Mother’s Embrace is expected to release on Steam in the first Quarter of 2019 and will only be available for the PC. For more information check out the Steam and Fantasy Flight websites.

There have been a number of product updates from Fantasy Flight Games with some new cycles on the way for their Living Card Games and expansions for their big box games.

Arkham Horror: The Card Game

Arkham Horror: The Card Game is a Living Card Game (new, fixed content is released each month) for 1-4 players in which players are investigators in a world inspired by H.P. Lovecraft’s fiction. The game has cycles (story arcs) where players create a deck for an investigator which they upgrade through the course of the cycle based on experience which they earn.

The Forgotten Age is the next cycle in which players may choose from five new investigators including Ursula Downs, Leo Anderson, Finn Edwards, and Calvin Wright. The latest article on the Fantasy Flight Games website spotlights Calvin Wright.

Designer, Matt Newman:

“Calvin made his original debut as a promotional investigator for a special Arkham Horror event many years ago. Most players never got the chance to play with Calvin, so we wanted to add him to the official roster of investigators across all of our Arkham Horror Files games. We decided to take this opportunity to expand Calvin’s backstory and themes of sacrifice and altruism that make Calvin unique among other investigators.” [source]

For more details about The Forgotten Age and Calvin Wright read Matt Newman’s article on the Fantasy Flight Games website.

Mansions of Madness 2nd Edition: Sanctum of Twilight Expansion

In Mansions of Madness 2nd Edition, players are investigators in a world based on H.P. Lovecraft’s fiction. The game takes place in various environments which are represented by tiles. Investigators are represented by miniatures which move across the tiles to encounter horrors and look for clues. The game is assisted by a digital application which adds ambiance and controls the flow of the story.

The Sanctum of Twilight expansion adds the Silver Twilight Lodge which is run by the most influential citizens of Arkham. They gather there to do business, plan parades, and lobby politicians … but also to enact secret rituals. The expansion adds two new investigators, Charlie Kane and Lily Chen, as well new spells, items, mechanics, and a new monster. Read the full preview on the Fantasy Flight Games website.

A Game of Thrones: The Card Game

A new Rookery variant has been added to A Game of Thrones: The Card Game which encourages a new style of game play. The “Rookery” is a set of twelve cards which players can bring to their game and use to swap with cards in their draw and plot decks. Players can do this after seeing their opponent’s faction and agenda but before they draw their opening hand. In order to celebrate this new Rookery variant a Great Hall event has been added to the 2018 Organized Calendar which will happen after the Regional Championships have begun and will have prize support.

Eight intro decks have also been added to the game representing:

  • House Stark
  • House Lannister
  • House Greyjoy
  • House Baratheon
  • House Tyrell
  • House Martell
  • House Targaryen
  • Night’s Watch

These decks are designed to introduce new players to the game and highlight the unique features of each faction. Each pre-constructed deck contains 69 cards which is broken down into a 60 card deck, a faction card, an agenda card, and 7 plot cards.

Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

Read a new piece of fiction set in the world of Legend of the Five Rings called “Repentance Does Not Come First” by Robert Denton III. The story focuses on the Phoenix Clan who bear the soul of Rokugan and try to do so without losing their own. Earth Scion Isawa Tadaka senses an approaching darkness and has a plan to stop it but at what cost? You can read the short fiction on their website.

This also ties into the Elemental Cycle, the next cycle for the Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game. This cycle will be released as 6 packs over the course of 6 weeks and emphasizes the five elemental rings of Air, Earth, Fire, Water, and Void. For more details you can check out their press release.

Fantasy Flight Games provided a small preview to their new expansion to A Game of Thrones: The Card Game last year when they first announced Sands of Dorne. While every faction is supported in The Sands of Dorne expansion, House Martell receives special attention to become contenders with the other factions. The powerful Doran Martell card was previewed in the release announcement. The latest preview focuses on the new Red Viper card and his ability to become more powerful with each challenge won with a Bastard character. Even Ellaria Sand, the Red Viper’s paramour, is a deadly force who can wear down opponent defenses.  And with the No Use For Grief event card, House Martell will never be at a loss for Sand Snakes or The Red Viper himself.  Read the preview to learn more about how to maximize the Sand Snakes and Bastards in a strategy to win with House Martell.

Sanctum of Twilight, the new expansion for the Mansions of Madness, brings us the esteemed societal Order of the Silver Twilight, investigators Lily Chen and Charlie Kane, new tiles, a new monster, a new type of token in the form of Restraints.  The Sanctum of Twilight expansion unlocks two new digital adventures for you to continue your adventures in Arkham.  The latest preview explores the scenario The Twilight Diadem. In the Twilight Diadem, the Silver Twilight Lodge hosts the annual Twilight Fair, a weeklong event that concludes with the crowning of the Queen of Love and Beauty at the lavish Twilight Ball.  Last year’s Queen mysteriously disappeared.  The scenario introduces a new map element in the form of parade floats that move throughout the scenario and overlap other map tiles. The parade will become crowded and distinguishing friend and foe will become harder.  If investigators find themselves surrounded, a new magical implement in the form of the Binding spell, which allows players to place a Restraint token in a space within range, may aid in their escape.  Will your investigators bring an end to the plots of the Order of the Silver Twilight? Read the preview to learn more about The Twilight Diadem scenario.

The winner’s of this round of Dice Tower Awards were announced this last week at Dice Tower Con, recorded live for YouTube as well. The nominees were selected by a panel of roughly 100 people, with voting shortly after managed by Jason Levine. A hearty thanks to everyone who participated. Congratulations to all the winners and nominees, which made for a fantastic list of games who all deserved the award, but of course there can be only one victor in each category.
