The Second Edition of A Game of Thrones: The Card Game still has a long road ahead of it to catch up to the amount of content that was released for it’s predecessor. However, fans can agree that the streamlined rules of the second edition breathe new life into the long-running series and the steady release of new content for it is just as fresh as ever. That is why it’s exciting news that the fifth big expansion, Sands of Dorne, is available now. As described by it’s announcement on Fantasy Flight Games’ website:
“In the southernmost reach of Westeros lie the sweltering deserts of Dorne. Under the rule of House Martell, this region stands separate from the rest of the Seven Kingdoms, divided geographically by imposing mountain ranges, and culturally by an indomitable spirit and a thirst for vengeance. Today, you have your chance to join them.”
This new expansion brings many hallmarks of the deserts of Dorne, House Martell, and the Sand Snakes to the intense tactical mechanics of the card game. The theme of these cards embellish patience and whittling down opponents over time, even when things aren’t going your way. Featuring more of the incredible second edition artwork and attractive new strategies with existing cards, the new expansion is a great addition for fans and new players alike. For more information about this expansion, be sure check out the thorough write up on Fantasy Flight’s website which has previews, explains synergies, and more!
EPIC is a two to four player card game by White Wizard games, makers of Star and Hero Realms, where you duke it out as gods to see who is the greatest. This game brings back the play and feel of trading card style games that have been around for years, but without the costly need of buying randomly packaged booster packs. EPIC comes ready to go out of the box, and only adds cards in an LCG style where each pack has the same cards as every other pack of the same name. Previous packs have added new characters you can play as called Tyrants, or just added new cards to the game in Uprising. Well now they are adding new characters to play as in the form of a Pantheon. The first of the two packs features Furios, Father Nature and Maligus, the Dark One, each coming with 12 cards and 3 token cards in the pack so you can play as either deity. Furios is revered by all in the forest, except for Maligus that is, and he seeks to overthrow Furios. But when Furios summons you to his defense, you obey.
The second features Helena, the Valiant and Zaltessa, the Huntress, each also with 12 cards and 3 token cards in the pack. Zaltessa will hunt anything and everything under the sun, includes the other gods, but Helena has the bravery and courage to stand up and hunt Zaltessa instead. Look for both of these packs to be on store shelves in January of 2018. You can click here for details on pre-ordering.
Fantasy Flight Games have announced The Devil and the Dragon, the fourth Data Pack in the Kitara Cycle for Android: Netrunner. This Data Pack includes three copies of twenty new cards and focuses on the Criminal and Weyland Consortium identities.
The Sub-Saharan League in the world of Android is further explored:
“The establishment of the Sub-Saharan League has launched Africa to a new position as a center of technological advancement. Fueling this hotbed of innovation is the Weyland Consortium—with their SSO Industries subsidiary proven to be a profitable venture. Despite their contributions to the SSL, SSO Industries has been shut out of construction for the potential second beanstalk on the banks of Lake Victoria. What plans does Weyland have for this beanstalk, and will their focus distract them from the Runners on the fringe, waiting for a chance to strike?”
You will need to own a copy of the Revised Android: Netrunner Core Set in order to use this Data Pack in a tournament legal deck, or the original Android: Netrunner Core Set for standard play. It is currently available for pre-order from your local retailer or from the Fantasy Flight Games website.
Legend of the Five Rings is a 45-90 minute living card game for 2 players that hit the shelves courtesy of Fantasy Flight Games earlier this year. This game is a reimplementation of the Legend of the Five Rings Collectible Card Game, published by AEG in 1995.
Over the weekend, Fantasy Flight Games announced the new Phoenix Clan Pack for Disciples of the Void.
The mystical Phoenix mediate between worlds—the physical and the spiritual, appealing to the very soul of the land. Mountains collapse at their whispered requests, dry rivers are convinced to flow again, plagues are banished, restless ghosts return to slumber, and crops flourish in previously barren wastelands. More than that, the Phoenix are the caretakers of the Emperor’s soul. In tune with the spiritual side of Rokugan, they would be the first to know if things were to fall out of balance…
The Disciples of the Void Clan Pack contains 78 new cards (three copies each of twenty-five different cards and one copy each of three different cards). These cards include a new role card, a legion of Shugenja, and the game’s highest cost card to date.
Fantasy Flight Games has announced the release of Meditations on the Ephemeral a new dynasty pack for the very popular Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game.
Legend of The Five Rings: The Card game is a 2-player Living Card Game set in the fantasy land of Rokugan. Players take command of rival clans and engage in epic battles to prove themselves the greatest clan in the realm and decide the fate of Rokugan.
Each player has access to a unique dynasty deck of clan cards representing the various actions, locations and characters available to them, an honor value and a number of proveniences under their control. The game takes place over a series of rounds with each player taking turns playing cards to further their goals. Victory is achieved by gaining honor, reducing you opponent’s honor or by braking enough of your opponent’s proveniences to launch a final assault on their clan’s stronghold.
Meditations on the Ephemeral expands the base game, completing the Imperial Cycle with 3 copies of 20 cards brand new to the game.
As the year comes to a close, so does the Imperial Cycle. The battle lines have been drawn, the Emperor is watching. Will your clan reign victorious, or be consigned to a mere footnote in the history books? Now is the time to decide your fate!
Meditations on the Ephemeral is available to buy in stores and online now. Head on over to Boardgamegeek for more information and check out Zee’s video review for an overview of the base game. Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game is just one of many great titles by Fantasy Flight Games.
Fantasy Flight Interactive has announced that the first title they plan to release will be The Lord of the Rings: Living Card Game. Based on the popular co-operative card game released by Fantasy Flight Games in 2011, the game has players participating in cooperative scenario based adventures controlling the heroes of Tolkien’s Middle Earth.
Fantasy Flight Interactive is making the digital version available on Steam in early December to a closed beta group as a single player title. Players can then purchase on the Founder’s Packs to access the full game experience. Founder’s Packs will include additional content, in game currency, and more.
The original game featured a strong bond between both the compelling narrative of Middle Earth, taking place predominantly between the adventure of Bilbo and Frodo, and a revolutionary cooperative gaming system. As one of the most popular early cooperative games players had to work together to defeat the evil Sauron, who was represented by an encounter deck filled with locations, enemies, and other treacheries.
Players in the digital implementation will still control three heroes with 30 card decks based on the four influence spheres – Leadership, Tactics, Spirit, and Lore.
The digital implementation of the game removes much of the maintenance work that players had to manage in the original version. In the new iteration of the game players focus on the Planning and Adventuring phases. The AI will handle playing cards from Sauron’s deck and the responsibilities enemies have in engaging heroes. Players will now get to focus on their own choices rather than game maintenance.
Each scenario includes instructions on win conditions, while all scenarios are lost if the three heroes die or the ever increasing threat level reaches the maximum. With over 100 expansions currently available for the game, Fantasy Flight Digital will have plenty of material to choose from in building and growing the digital universe of the game.
Like with any good living card game, you need to keep bringing out more content in order to keep things fresh and in the case of Legend of the 5 Rings, keep the story moving forward. So it comes as no surprise that Fantasy Flight Games has announced the Imperial Cycle for the Legends of the 5 Rings LCG, but with a major difference.
That difference is that the six new packs will be released over the span of six weeks, instead of six months like normal. At the same time the narrative of the L5R story is going to be expanded over those same six weeks, following the events in Rokugan in almost real time if you get the packs as they release. This will shake things up and change the landscape of the card game in a matter of days instead of weeks. At the end, there will be lots of new cards for each of the factions, and of note is that there will be cards specific to the role you choose, whether you are a Seeker or a Keeper. You can preview some of the cards and read more about this event on the FFG website, and look for the packs to start appearing on store shelves in early November.
First in this pair of announcements from Fantasy Flight Games is the first two ships coming in Wave 13 for X-Wing. I know we just announced wave 12, but i order to capitalize on the upcoming movie release of The Last Jedi, FFG doesn’t want to dawdle. First of the two ships is the Resistance Bomber, this is a tough shelled bomber that is packed to the gills with bombs. And while it may sport only the usual upgrade slots, it comes with a new upgrade called Ordinance Silos. This upgrade puts counters on all your bomb upgrades and whenever you would have to discard the bomb card, you can just discard the tokens instead. Meaning you will get a lot more use out of the various bombs you will equip it with.
The second ship is Kylo Ren’s TIE Silencer, sporting agility and maneuverability like no other TIE, and strong weapons to boot. Of course since this is Kylo’s TIE you will get him as a pilot along with three others, and even a copy of the I’ll Show you the Dark Side card to mitigate damage. Look for this ship and the bomber to hit store shelves in early 2018, and you can check out FFG’s website for more info.
Second of the announcements is the latest deluxe expansion for the Game of Thrones Card Game 2nd Edition, called House of Thorns. This new expansion adds a host of new cards to House Tyrell, giving you more strategic options in the game. One interesting aspect of this expansion is that it brings in jousting, forcing battles to be one on one with the strongest combatant being the victor. And since this expansion likes to joust, there are also a number of cards that benefit you while jousting, or even kneels characters before an attack resolves. Overall this expansion will bring up the prowess of House Tyrell, making them even more dangerous to fight. You can find out more information on other cards and abilities on FFG’s website, and look for the expansion in the 4th quarter of this year.
Fantasy Flight Games has released details about their newest expansion for Arkham Horror: The Card Game, The Path to Carcosa. Fans of the Lovecraftian Mythos will love the exptensive references to The King In Yellow, the famous short stories by Robert W. Chambers, featuring the titular play which infects the mind and breeds insanity. Carcosa introduces new “hidden” keywords, causing terrors and abilities to a single player, which must be kept hidden. New concepts of Doubt and Conviction drive the personal nature of the game, changing the campaign line between stories.
You can read the full news story about The Path to Carcosa here, and look for the expansion in August 2017.
Bringing on the third installment in the Alliances cycle of Star Wars: The Card Game by Fantasy Flight Games. Desperate Circumstances brings in the opportunity for players to now recruit from the fringes of the galaxy as opposed to the traditional sources of fighters for the rebels and imperials. Featuring five different objective sets this addition to the cycle will provide some interesting variety. With his set focusing heavily on the use of multiple affiliations and the cards to make having those affiliations concurrently this will bring some new to the game that has not necessarily been available previously.
This set is anticipated to hit shelves in Fall 2017. For more details you can see the blog post by FFG announcing it in more detail here.
