Upper Deck Entertainment has just announced that they have acquired the rights to the iconic James Bond series of movies for both trading cards and board games. Master Spy James Bond, originally penned by author Ian Fleming, first appeared in movies in Dr. No in 1962, and has continued in more than 25 films since. “James Bond is one of the most iconic characters in the history of entertainment,” said Jason Masherah, President of Upper Deck. “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to provide a new and unique line of James Bond trading cards and trading card games to fans around the world.” The exciting part of this announcement is the statement that Upper Deck will be making a 007 licensed Legendary deck building game. At this point it is unclear if the future game will be part of the original Legendary, or newer Legendary Encounters lines. The game is described as: “Players will be able to relive their favorite movie moments while working together to recruit their favorite characters and unravel the nefarious schemes of the most infamous 007 villains.”, suggesting the more cooperative nature of the Encounters series of games. Projected release date for the game is Summer 2019.
The game that kicked off the Legendary Encounters series, Legendary Encounters: Alien, is finally getting an expansion. This expansion will do what everyone wants expansions to do and that is give us more stuff to play with and new adventures to be had. It will have 400 cards with original art, many of those cards will be legions of new Alien cards including more face huggers and more Alien queens. Also included will be additional characters that you can play as such as Lieutenant Gorman, Superintendent Andrews, Captain Elgyn, and Kane. Last, and certainly not least, this box will include a new game mat to use with the game that will allow you to play as the Alien Queen against those pesky humans. Look for this expansion to hit stores in September.
Fans of the Firefly series are constantly looking for the next shiny game, and Upper Deck is here to satisfy them with Legendary Encounters: A Firefly Deck Building Game.
Designed by Ben Cichoski and Danny Mandel, this cooperative deck building game uses the Legendary Encounters system popularised by the likes of Aliens and Predators and takes it into the Firefly universe. This game will allow players to play as the main crew of Serenity, including the likes of Mal, Inara, River, and more. Avatars that aren’t used will form a Crew deck that can support the players throughout the game. Players will be playing different scenarios, called Episodes, seeking to complete different objectives, gain credits, and win the game.
Legendary Encounters: A Firefly Deck Building Game will be released on August 10th. For additional information, visit Upper Deck’s website here!
The designers of Legendary Encounters Ben Cichoski and Danny Mandel have designed a new game that combines an expandable card game with a collectible toy: H.E.A.D. Hunters. The official press release for this game describes the gameplay in this way:
In this tabletop game for two or more players, each player controls his or her very own Hero of Every Age & Dimension (H.E.A.D.) Hunter. Each toy features its own deck of cards, position platforms, measuring string and combat dice to attack and defend against other Hunters as it moves around the table for position and opportunity. When the game is over, all the components fit back inside the head while the toy sits patiently (and attractively) on your shelf, waiting for its next opponent.
In 2007, Gut Shot Games created the idea of an expandable card game in the head of a toy, but the initial game needed work, and either the game itself was not compelling enough or the timing was not right. When the idea was presented to Cichoski and Mandel, they were enthusiastic about the idea. “The concept is so unique that we wanted to match that innovation in the game play,” according to Cichoski. “The game fuses the best of combat card games and miniatures games for an entirely fresh take on a tabletop game. It’s truly aH.E.A.D. of its time!”
Gut Shot Games anticipated the game to be a very innovative gaming experience. Some of the highlights of H.E.A.D. Hunters are:
- Heroes of Every Age & Dimension! Play as an old Norse Viking, a Robot Assassin, a 19th century pugilist or another of the 10 best Hunters across time and space.
- Customizable Decks! Mix and match cards from other H.E.A.D. Hunters to customize your deck to match your own play style.
- Position Yourself for Advantage! As you are up against the most notorious Heroes of the past or future, where you attack from is as important as what you attack with.
- Create Infinite Battlefields! Each character has unique starting terrain and buildings that can be placed in a multitude of positions and layouts to create unlimited fields of battle.
- Play With Your Toys! Instead of a box where game parts are stashed away, everything you need to play H.E.A.D. Hunters is stored inside the toy. And when you’re not playing, you have a cool display piece to show off.
Gut Shot Games will be launching a Kickstarter project for H.E.A.D. Hunters in the fall of 2016.

Some additional information has been released on the newest Legendary Encounter set, Predators. Legendary Encounters: Predators will take you through both the rural and urban settings of the first two movies. You will see familiar scenes from the movies like the predator trophy room and a mud covered Arnie as well as characters like Dutch, Blaine, Mac and Dillon. Players can choose to either play as the military trying to track down and kill the predator before he kills you, or you can also play as the predators, going on a hunt to get the most glory. Then, the best part of all, this set can be mixed with the other Legendary Encounters sets so that you can stage your very own Aliens vs. Predator scenario and see if it comes out better than the movie. The Predators set will come with 600-700 cards and is slated to launch at GenCon 2015.

Jason Brenner from Upper Deck confirmed that a Predator expansion will be coming to the popular Legendary Encounters Alien game in a succinct teaser post over at Boardgamegeek.com on January 27.
“You want Predator…..You got it in July. See you at GenCon”.

Calvin Patten, a participant in the Marvel Legendary Deck Building Championships at GenCon earlier this year, gives us an inside look at the event as he documents it from start to finish.
There was only one Legendary event at GenCon this year and 1st place would take home an Iron Man trophy along with a $10,000 grand prize!
“I Woke up and started the day just like any other big event day. Planned ahead, knowing that the tournament starts at 10:00 am. After breakfast I made my way back to the room to get a little prep work withthe Villains set. So many things to take into account for the tournament. I have had my share of bigger events. Last year I had the chance to play in both of the Gen Cons 5K tournaments. I was able to make the top 10 the first one and top 25 the second one. This event is a little different as it is only (1) event and it is for $10,000. While coming in the top 5 would be great, I was really just looking to have fun as that much prize money brought out some serious gamers.”
