Horror Game

Fantasy Flight has announced a new expansion for the third edition of Arkham Horror, Dead of Night. According to Fantasy Flight’s website, this expansion features “two all-new scenarios, new encounters for every location in Arkham, new monsters and anomalies, a new monster deck holder, and four new investigators to face these fresh horrors, armed with new spells, items, and allies.”

In the first of the new scenarios, Shots in the Dark, the investigators are tasked with trying to bring peace to Arkham by getting the O’Bannion and Sheldon gangs to cease firing at each other and all the while investigate the underpinnings of why the gangs are at each other’s throats again.

The second of the new scenarios, On the Lam, concentrates on the character of Skids O’Toole, a down on his luck ex-con who has vowed to make his mother proud by finding ways to keep Arkham safe and protect it from the unknown.

Fans of the classic Stephen King novel, 1990 miniseries, and recent 2017 remake alike will be pleased to discover that Pennywise and the Losers’ Club are making their way to the tabletop space with IT: Evil Below, coming this fall from The OP (USAopoly).

IT: Evil Below is a 2-7 player cooperative game in which players take on the role of the Losers’ Club as they traverse their neighborhood in Derry, ME, tempting fate in numerous encounters and using their character-specific abilities to take down the menacing clown and stop the child abductions once and for all. But if just one player runs out of health, the objective fails and Pennywise continues to wreak psychological havoc upon the citizens of this quaint New England town for years to come.

Everything Epic has launched a Kickstarter Campaign for Grind House, a fast-paced, narrative horror game for 2-6 players.

“You receive an invitation from the mysterious man known as “The Host” to take part in a contest at the infamous “Grind House.” The letter promises you the opportunity to play a game to win a reward greater than you could possibly imagine, 10 Million Dollars – with the only requirement to stay alive for 12 hours in the house.”

Now you’re locked up in this house of horrors trying to survive, losing arms and legs and wondering why you make such poor life choices…

In Grind House, the ultimate goal is survival but each player receives a persona card – a classic archetype with a secret motive. The benevolent Doctor wants to keep his fellow players alive, while the Psychopath would prefer that he is the only survivor. The Pianist has his priorities right – he just wants to keep his hands intact.

Since this is a horror game, some unfortunate souls will perish but lucky for them the game is not over. Players may return as ghosts to haunt the remaining survivors (and get revenge on that crazy Psychopath). It is even possible for a ghost player to win the game. After exploring all five rooms in the house, any survivors left total up their score to determine the winner.

Gameplay

After choosing your character board and getting a random persona card, receive a random Item card, which can be used during the game to help you survive.

To get started the first player will draw two cards from the Room Deck and choose one to explore, the other room is returned to the box. The Room Card is flipped over and read aloud to all of the players. Each room is unique and it will pit the players against each other for survival. Sometimes volunteers are needed, and other times you will vote for the players to come to harm. Remember getting injured means moving forward in the game – no one will leave unscathed.

Once four rooms have been explored, there’s one last room to survive. If you do, you escape the Grind House. Points are tallied up by having the most uninjured body parts, as well as any other secret objectives your persona might have. The player with the most points wins!

The Kickstarter campaign runs until December 2 and delivery is expected in May 2019. You can pledge for the base game only or choose the higher pledge to receive two expansions as well – The Carnival and The Cthulhu expansion. All pledge levels will include any unlocked stretch goals.

Sandy Petersen, one of the great horror game designers (Cthulhu Wars, Theomachy), has a new game currently on Kickstarter, Planet Apocalypse. Planet Apocalypse is a 1-5 player cooperative game which takes place in a post-apocalyptic world invaded by hellish demons. Players can select one of 5 distinctive heroes, each with unique special abilities. The heroes need to defeat invading demons on their way to the final Demon Lord, who can only be beaten with multiple small attacks, followed by calculated retreats to heal and regain courage.

The miniatures are everything one would expect from a Sandy Petersen game, which is to say amazingly detailed demonic creatures straight from another plane. All miniatures were designed by renowned artist Keith Thompson, and were made to a larger 28mm scale, with some minis stretching more than 100mm tall. Multiple maps, Demon Lords, and missions make the game highly replayable. The core game comes with more than 100 cards, 42 dice, hundreds of counters and tokens, and 29 miniatures. The add-on Void Pack adds more miniatures, components, and boards, and with the inevitable stretch goals makes this campaign a gold mine of detailed miniature gameplay. Finally, for those who simply cannot wait, there is a high pledge level where 1 lucky backer will be able to play the game with Sandy nearly 5 months before it delivers.

The Kickstarter Campaign for Planet Apocalypse continues through February 26, and the game is expected to deliver in February 2019.
