The 2017 Spiel des Jahres nominee, The Quest for El Dorado, is getting it’s first expansion – Heroes & Hexes! Reiner Knizia’s deck-building racing game through South America can be expanded to add heroes and demons to the course, injecting riskier decisions and daring rewards. Demon spaces are cheap, costing nothing to enter, and can even offer shortcuts, but all of it is for a price. Demon spaces bring curses, burdening the player with unsavory effects they’ll have to deal with for the rest of the game. It’s not all bad though, as everyone starts with familiars in their deck offering one-off powers and tavern spaces on the board provide heroes that can really give you an edge on your way to the City of Gold.
“To play with this expansion, you must use the “Caves” variant of The Quest for El Dorado base game in which mountains are loaded with cave tokens. This expansion includes new cave tokens to be mixed with those of the base game, as well as four new types of expedition cards (with three copies of each) that can be pulled into the market once a stall opens. […] The expansion includes six suggested map set-ups — all at medium or hard levels, and all with three new terrain tiles — as well as guidelines for how to create maps yourself.”
Knizia’s games are often mechanically strong, elegant, and lacking frills, so to see an expansion to one of his designs which adds risk/reward systems is exciting. Do you take the path that’s really less traveled, or take the longer route to come out of this race with a clean soul and sounder mind? To me this feels like a must-have expansion for anyone who loves The Quest for El Dorado, as the familiars, cards, and map variability alone breathe more zest into an already rock solid game, all the other bits are an even more pleasing bonus. The expansion is slated to make it to retail soon, or at least before the end of the year as far as I can find, but If you’d like to find out more be sure to check out their website for rulebooks and further announcements.
Are you missing a scary-good board game for Halloween? Perhaps Monster Slaughter will fit the bill.
Players take the role of the head of a family of monsters – werewolves, vampires, zombies and golems. Their job is to hunt down and slay the irritating teenagers that have taken refuge (or just want a secluded place to hold their Halloween party) in a house in the middle of the forest. Which teenager bites the dust first? That’s up to you.
Monster Slaughter was fully funded on Kickstarter. It is scheduled for release in October.
In Tales of Glory, players are emerging heroes and each turn represents a year in their lives. Each player decides which spectacular deeds his or her hero has done to gain the most glory. After 10 turns, the hero that earned the most glory wins.
During each turn, players simultaneously select a quest they want to do from a common pool. They then pay the cost of the quest and place it on their “path of life” connected to another quest they already made or their departure area. Some quests, such as slaying monsters, bring immediate glory while others are affected by other quests on their “path of life”.
Tales of Glory is scheduled for release in November.
Both titles are by Ankama Board Games.

Brain Games would like to announce the recent release of three new titles, Dungeon Rush, Dokmus, and Flamme Rouge.
Dungeon Rush is a “dungeon delve” in which players are in control of two heroes, one for the right hand and one for the left. Players each simultaneously revel two cards, and choose how their heroes will tackle them. Heroes can combine their efforts when tougher challenges appear. Players will be able to upgrade their heroes as the game progresses.
Dokmus is a game for 2-4 players who will lead an expedition to the island of Dokmus, the ancestral god of your tribe. During set-up, players will randomize eight double-sided map pieces, including which side of each map piece to place faceup, and place them in a 3×3 grid so that the middle place is left empty. In the game, players will draft the aid of Guardian cards in order to gain special powers such as moving and rotating, moving tokens, or gaining the first player marker for the next turn. The layout of the islands changes constantly based on player actions, and players will get victory points for discovered temples and ruins on the map as well as sacrificed tokens.
Flamme Rouge is an exciting, “fast-paced, tactical bicycle racing game where each player controls a team of two riders: a Rouleur and a Sprinteur. The players’ goal is to be the first to cross the finish line with one of their riders. Players move their riders forward by drawing and playing cards from that riders specific deck, depleting it as they go. Use slipstreams to avoid exhaustion and position your team for a well timed sprint for the win.”
All three of these games had a December, 2016 release.
Fantasy Flight Games has provided a preview of the upcoming Hero and Monster Collection expansion for Descent 2.0, Shards of Everdark. This expansion introduces four heroes from Descent’s first edition, “breathing new life into them with revitalized artwork and figure sculpts. In the same way, two monster groups from the first edition rejoin the game, as well as an entirely new monster group—the dark minotaurs.”
This latest preview discusses in more detail one of the heroes of this expansion, Arvel Worldwalker, and one of the monsters, the shades. Arvel is a hero that boasts balanced attributes, and when she fails an attribute test, she can either recover 1 Fatigue or reroll the test. Additionally, Arvel’s Heroic Feat enables her to return up to two of her Class cards to her Class deck and gain any number of Class cards from her deck worth an equal amount of XP. This powerful ability allows Arvel access to her Class deck throughout a campaign to give her true versatility for any situation.
Shades are evil creatures that appear in larger numbers, with ethereal forms that allow them to warp next to heroes when they fail attribute tests and prey upon those that attempt to recover Fatigue.

A cooperative castle defense board game with 70 miniatures, where mighty Heroes have to withstand the siege of an Abyssal horde!
CoolMiniOrNot is currently running a Kickstarter campaign for B-Sieged: Sons of the Abyss, a castle-defense game for 1-6 players where players work cooperatively to defend the Citadel of Modhelm from the Abyssal Hordes using their mighty heroes and castle defenses.
In B-Sieged: Sons of the Abyss, the Council has given the Messenger a quest: he must successfully escape the besieged citadel by slipping past the amassing enemies, after which he must find a very powerful artifact and return to the citadel with it to destroy the invading Abyssal Hordes. The players control select heroes, tasked with ensuring that the Messenger escapes the Citadel safely and holding out on the castle walls until the Messenger returns.
In a game round, the heroes act first. Each hero will have 3 actions he or she can take, including gaining resources, repairing buildings, fighting enemies, or using the catapult in the middle of the castle to fire on the invaders. Then the Abyssal Hordes act, moving in to attack the citadel. Monsters will move and attack differently based on 3 different zones positioned outside the city walls.
A copy of B-Sieged: Sons of the Abyss includes the following components:
- 24 Standard Krohn miniatures
- 8 Elite Krohn miniatures
- 16 Standard Gargoh miniatures
- 8 Elite Gargoh miniatures
- 8 Mölen miniatures

- 6 colored Hero bases
- 4 double-sided enemy boards
