Greater Than Games

Greater Than Games is gearing up for their next Kickstarter, this time around it’s a dystopian future game about rebuilding the city of Dubai.  The game is called Dubai: Rebuild the Ruins, and will be the latest design by the Cardboard Edison duo of Chris and Suzanne Zinsli.  They are describing the game as worker placement, tile laying, and resource management as you try to be the one to rebuild the city the most.  Worker placement will be done through a rondel mechanic and so player order will be changing and there will be reactions to each player’s action, meaning you will be always engaged.  You will have to manage your resources to be able to rebuild parts of the city which is the ultimate goal of the game.

For more information on the game you can always follow Greater than Games on twitter, read the below press release from Greater than Games, or wait for the Kickstarter to launch at the end of February.

Save the Date – Dubai: Rebuild the Ruins Crowdfunding Launching February 28, 2017

St. Louis – Greater Than Games, LLC will kick off the Dubai: Rebuild the Ruins Crowdfunding campaign, February 28, 2017, on Kickstarter.

Dubai: Rebuild the Ruins is Greater Than Games’ newest game from the creative minds of Chris and Suzanne Zinsli of Cardboard Edison.

Dubai: Rebuild the Ruins is a tabletop board game with Worker Placement, Tile Laying, and Resource Management elements set in the year 2299 for 2 – 4 players. Players compete with unique faction powers to rebuild the ruins of the post-apocalyptic/dystopian future city of Dubai. The faction that has rebuilt the most of the city at the end of the game will rule Dubai!

The Story of Dubai

THE GREAT WAR IS NOW JUST A DISTANT MEMORY IN THE MINDS OF ALL BUT THE ELDEST AMONG US. Battles led to the splintering of the people living around The Shining City while one faction remained – the Hazimin. The Hazimin have done what they can to keep their still glistening tower standing tall. However, though their monumental home in the center of the city is still impressive, their numbers are few. Even as new generations grow to power, the ruins of Dubai are at the heart of all conflicts among the factions of the wasteland. With the ruins still standing as a beacon of what once was – and a promise of what could be again – the new leaders of each faction (the Hazimin, the Bahriyyin, the Tayyarin, and the New Badu) have decided it is time to reclaim the city and become the leaders of Dubai.

Power over the city will be decided by the people, and only with that power can one faction establish their dominance. As your faction’s leader, it is up to you to return the ruins of the diamond of the desert to its former glory. Your control must outreach that of other factions to ensure that you rebuild the ruins in your image and rule the reformed city of Dubai!

Dubai: Rebuild the Ruins features unique thematic flavor and exciting mechanics. By using rondels for worker placement, players are constantly engaged in the game with little downtime as turn order is always changing. This allows for multiple player interactions as one player’s turn often involves reactions from other players. The setting is additionally unique with dystopian futuristic elements that draw closely from the buildings of the modern day city of Dubai.

lazer-ryders

If took the 80’s, swirled them around in a pot, and then poured it into a box, you would have close to the look of what you are getting with Lazer Ryderz.  Lazer Ryderz is the latest Kickstarter game from GreaterThanGames, and seems to take a movement mechanic and turn it into it’s own game.  The game is quick and easy and involves you choosing to either go faster or slower, and then if you want to turn or go straight, that’s it.  The goal of the game is to collect and score the prisms on the table, but to do that you have to pass fully through the prism, once you do that you change it out for your color prism.  Manage to get three prisms of your color on the board and you win.  Oh, and it’s not as easy as it sounds, especially since this is like light bike racing from TRON where if you intersect someone’s trail, even your own, you crash.  Crashing starts you back at the edge of the table and gives the other players a chance to steal the prisms that you got.

Those who have played X-Wing before will pick this game up quickly as the movement in this game reflects that closely, but with the crashing and prism scoring it has set itself apart.  If a box full of the 80’s sounds like fun to you, then head on over to the campaign page to pledge for your own copy.

Sentinels of the Multiverse is a highly rated superhero card game that has been running for 5 years now, but the game is coming to an end.  Now not to worry though, the game continues to be printed, it’s just that the next expansion to be released, Oblivaeon, will be the last in the Sentinels line.  So to celebrate that, Greater Than Games is helping people complete their collections by offering a Hero Variant Pack that includes every hero card and variant that has ever been printed.  No more hunting for the highly limited exclusive ones or paying top dollar for them, now you can get them all, with brand new art, in one package.  But even more special, in a limited print run they are offering all these cards in foil form, meaning you can have all the heroes with a nice shiny finish to them.  The regular non-foil version of the set will come later, but for now you can pre-order the foil version while supplies last at your local game store.

New Bedford, and it’s expansion Rising Tide, are two releases for Gen Con from hit publisher Greater Than Games (at booth 2123). New Bedford is a light-weight resource management game where you gather resources and add buildings all in the pursuit of whaling.

As is the case with nearly every Greater Than Games product, the production quality of this game is off the charts. The wooden resource tokens and player pieces are very well represented as seen below. you can see the first player token and whale tokens/meeples are pretty fun

The beauty doesn’t stop with the tokens however. Below is a picture of the “un-punched” cardboard (of thick quality) found in the game.

bedford 5

Set in the mid-1800s, the historical age of whaling, New Bedford gives 1 to 4 players the chance to build the Massachusetts town of the same name into a thriving community. Gather resources to add buildings with new actions, and launch ships to go whaling. Go out longest for the best choice, but wait too long and the whales become harder to catch. And don’t forget to pay your crew when ships return! Carefully balance risk management and timing to become a leader of industry in this medium-weight worker placement and resource management game.”

The expansion (pictured below) is also available. It adds a fifth player and more tokens. Head on over to booth 2123 to pick up your copy while supplies last!

exoplanets

Exoplanets was Kickstarted almost a year ago to this day by Board and Dice and received good reviews and raised well past it’s original funding goal.  Now the game is released and has since been picked up by Greater Than Games for publishing in North America, so what better way to raise the funding for that print run than to run another Kickstarter?  Exoplanets is a solar system building game where you are terraforming planets around a central star in order to create the best system before the star burns out.  You will use these planets to generate resources to build other planets, create life on habitable planets, and fulfill goals in order to score more points.  Play continues until the last of the light resource is taken, signaling that the star is burning out.  The Kickstarter being run by Greater Than Games will feature the usual tweaks on the rules side of things to help improve flow, clarity, and replayability, plus all the extras and promos available in the original Kickstarter will be available in this one.  So if you missed it the first time around and what to get a copy, head on over to the campaign page.

fate elder gods

The second game being put out by Greater than Games is called Fate of the Elder Gods, designed by Richard Launius, Darrell Louder, and Chris Kirkman and will be up on Kickstarter come July 19th.  Fate of the Elder Gods is described as;

In Fate of the Elder Gods, players take on the ever-maddening role of cults trying to summon ancient evil and herald the fall of mankind! Each cult is in competition to be first to summon their god, but they all must also repel intrepid investigators working to seal off the gate to beyond with Elder signs. Gather arcane artifacts, cast powerful spells, embrace the Dark Gift of your Elder God, and be first to hasten doom… before it’s too late!

Play in the game will be accomplished through playing spell cards which will be used to either move around the Fate Clock board of Arkham, or to ready spells to create an engine to pump out more powerful spells and combinations.  Whoever raises their summon track to 9, and thus summoning their ancient one, will be the winner of the game.  While the Kickstarter will be in July, Greater than Games will have copies for demo at GenCon in August.

exoplanets

Successfully Kickstarted in June of 2015, Exoplanets is a solar system building game where you are terraforming planets around a central star in order to create the best system before the star burns out.  You will use these planets to generate resources to build other planets, create life on habitable planets, and fulfill goals in order to score more points.  Play continues until the last of the light resource is taken, signaling that the star is burning out.

The game was fairly well received and obtained a Dice Tower Seal of Approval in Tom’s video review of the game.  Thus Greater Than Games decided to pick up the game for distribution and will be Kickstarting a second edition later this year.  The Kickstarter will include promotional items and variants not included in the original along with updated rules and such to make it a true second edition.  No additional information has been given beyond that so we will just have to keep a lookout for the Kickstarter around the middle of the year.

oblivaeon

Like the old saying goes, all good things must come to an end, and GreaterThanGames is taking that approach to the Sentinels of the Multiverse card game.  Having had wonderful success with the super hero themed card game since 2011, on it’s 5th anniversary the final expansion for the game, OblivAeon, is now live on Kickstarter.  This new expansion promises to bring more of what you want in the form of heroes, villains, and environments along with some new items.  First is the addition of a mission system that will gain you allies and additional tools to aid in you in your fight against the mighty OblivAeon, the toughest opponent you will ever face.  Another addition is that you will be fighting the battle on two fronts now, with two environments as you fight back the Scions and Aeon to get at the final big bad.  Also new is that since the whole of existence is in jeopardy, villains you have fought in the past have come back as allies such as Baron Blade coming in as Luminary, and The Matriarch coming back as The Harpy.  All this is shaping up to make this exit of the card game a high note.

Now as for the campaign itself, already it is having meteoric success in raising over $375,000 within the first day and blowing past 14 stretch goals, unlocking things like a comic, new hero variants, and new environments.  Also available in this campaign is a mega collectors box to hold every single Sentinels card that has been released, and you can buy the Hero’s pack, which is a collection of every hero variant that has been released to date.  No more paying out big bucks for those limited early variants, now you will be able to get them all with fresh new artwork.  If you want to jump on the bandwagon like over 2900 other people (me included), head on over to the campaign page to pledge now.

oblivaeon

Five years after its first appearance, the smash hit superhero card game Sentinels of the Multiverse is officially coming to a close. The story of the Freedom Five and their legendary allies and enemies has so far wound its way through 6 major expansion sets and a myriad of single deck expansions, each building up the vibrant world of the game, but GTG has been very open about the fact that that story wouldn’t last forever. Now the end is officially nigh.

According to the official announcement on the Greater Than website, Sentinels’ final expansion, Oblivaeon, is the planned culmination of everything that has come before it – those inclined may find clues about the finale hidden throughout the previous expansions – and it will bring together all the different storylines of the Multiverse.

To bring all of this to life, Sentinels is returning to its Kickstarter roots one last time. The official campaign will launch Tuesday, February 9th and, as is only appropriate for the franchise’s swan song, it will also include special anniversary content such as a new printing of all the character promos that have ever been released for the game (with all new art!) and the SotM Ultimate Collector’s Case, which will hold your entire Sentinels collection in one purposely designed box.

Keep your eyes peeled for the campaign, and if you’d like to know more, check out the full GTG announcement here.

monster truck mayhem

Greater Than Games (GtG), responsible for hits like Sentinels of the Multiverse,  has brought Monster Truck Mayhem designed by Ben Pinchback & Matt Riddle to Kickstarter.

SUNDAY! SUNDAY! SUNDAY! Monster Truck Mayhem is invading the SuperMegaDome! Brought to you by Ridback Pub, 101 The Animal, and Big Al’s Sound Emporium, this thrill show spectacular will BLOW YOUR MIND! All your favorite trucks and more will be there… AND SO SHOULD YOU!

Monster Truck Mayhem is a real time dice rolling game that has 2-5 players racing monster trucks through an obstacle course. This is a competitive game that will have players rolling custom dice to move 1-3 spaces. The dice have two special symbols on them a ‘Tire’ and a ‘Boost’, roll three ‘Boost’ symbols and you get an extra movement, roll three ‘Tire’ symbols and you can cause another player to spin out.

monster truck mayhem board

There are 6 trucks for players to choose from, each with a different special ability. A few examples are:

Big D – can move forward three spaces without rolling dice with the Drive Angry! Mayhem ability.

Cthulhu Crusher – can make other racers go insane during a race forcing them to move backwards instead with the The Insanity Roll.

Valkyrie – can move 5 spaces instead of three when players roll three ‘Boost’ symbols.

Truckdor – uses a special Fire Die with a wild side that can be used as any other die face.

An interesting twist on this project is that there will be no stretch goals, instead GtG has ‘unlocked’ them all at the start of the project and there is only one pledge level making backing this project a very simple process. Additionally they are including a free expansion with the base game during the Kickstarter. The expansion includes 2 more trucks to choose from as well as rules for multi-lap races that will allow players to upgrade their trucks.

Monster Truck Mayhem certainly looks like a great time in a box, with real time competitive play and take that elements this game could be a big hit with players that enjoy quick playing real time games. I would expect lots of shouting and laughter as you play this one. Not only fun it will look great on the table with art by Benjamin Raynal who also illustrated King of Tokyo as well as Jeff Brown and Chris Kirkman.

If you’re interested in a fast, fun, crazy, real time dice rolling extravaganza, are a Monster Truck Fan that can’t afford your own real life truck to race, or just enjoy the frenzied excitement that this game will bring into your life then you should check out Monster Truck Mayhem on Kickstarter here.
