IDW Games New Game Announcements
Batman: Gotham City Under Siege, although not a new announcement for its release is going to be hitting retail very soon.
Designed by Richard Launius and Michael Guigliano, and Batman – The Animated Series: Gotham City Under Siege is a cooperative game for 1-5 players. Each player takes on the role of Batman, Robin, Batgirl, Commissioner Gordon or the Gotham City Police Department, along with the unlikely aid of Catwoman. They must defend the city over the course of four acts, with each act inspired by episodes from the first season of the show. Players will need to work together to find the right balance between completing challenging story cards, or taking down the villains and masterminds running rampant in the streets.
First-time announcing, however, is TMNT Adventures. More info will be coming soon.
Last year, Restoration Games announced their intention to bring back Fireball Island during the Dice Tower Live show at Gen Con. Their project erupted onto Kickstarter and funded exceedingly well, to the tune of 2.8 million dollars. It was no secret then that Restoration Games was going to set it sights to bigger and bolder projects. Today during the same annual show, we learned what the next one will be – Return to Dark Tower, co-designed by Restoration Games’ own Rob Daviau and Isaac Childres, multi-award winning designer of Gloomhaven.
This restoration project is based on the 1981 classic, Dark Tower, a competitive adventure game featuring an electronic tower that took inputs and tracked stats, battles, and equipment. Players would navigate the board to bolster up their forces and brave random encounters on their way to the titular tower in the center in the hopes of being the player to ascend it and quash the denizens within. It was no surprise why it was such a hot toy at the time, being this device-driven game in a high fantasy setting. It’s equally no shock that the game was so highly requested, and now it will get the full Restoration Games treatment with no less level of attention that Fireball Island got, with it’s own Kickstarter to boot in 2019 for a projected 2020 release.
“Daviau and Childres—along with Jacobson and Restoration’s Tinker-in-Chief, J.R. Honeycutt—have been working behind the scenes for months to develop the core game mechanics. The game strives to provide players with interesting choices about which quests to pursue, how to best use resources to keep the growing evil in check, and when to make that final decision to assault the tower. Jacobson revealed that, while the game is still early in development, one of the reasons for the announcement’s timing was to allow them to do significant playtesting without fear of the story leaking.”
The only detail we know that’s been set in stone is that this new iteration of the game will be cooperative. Rob Daviau is quoted via press release in saying, “We always believed that, had it come out today, Dark Tower would have been a cooperative game. The real threat is that imposing tower. It will take all of the players working together to defeat it.” This is a very cool development, and I agree, cooperative games like Legends of Andor have accomplished some of what Dark Tower originally set to achieve within a framework of one of the most classic fantasy tropes – an adventuring party. This shift is a good fit for Dark Tower, and with the team of rockstar game designers and developers at the helm there’s a lot here to be ecstatic about. For more information about this project as it unfolds, be sure to check Restoration Games’ website for updates.

At Gen Con 2018, Fantasy Flight Games will be running a special event which utilizes this unique scenario which can be played by 1-4 players as a standalone scenario or integrated into any campaign as a side story. The scenario will also be made available and sent out to participating retail stores in Invocation Kits this fall, before Arkham Nights 2018. Each copy, both at Gen Con and the Invocation Kits, will include a promotional, extended art card.
A second scenario, The Night’s Usurper, will also be released as a standalone scenario and continues the story of The Eternal Slumber scenario. It will also come with a promotional, extended art card but this will only be available at Arkham Nights 2018.
The results of the playthroughs will be recorded and affect the Arkham Horror: The Card Game community at Arkham Nights 2018. Depending on the result at Arkham Nights, one of three different basic weaknesses will be included in a future product, with a nod to the events in The Night’s Usurper.
The Gen Con event has already sold out so if you can’t make it to either Gen Con 2018 or Arkham Nights 2018, both scenarios will be released as a single retail package titled Guardians of the Abyss later in the year.
Every year Fantasy Flight Games creates a special event for The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game, and this year is no different. At Gen Con 2018 you’ll be able to create your own adventure though iconic locations in The Wizard’s Quest special event. You’ll build your own custom scenario as you journey through Mirkwood and encounter familiar cards with new and unexpected abilities.
You can register ($20 charge) for The Wizard’s Quest at Gen Con 2018 but you need to hurry as 2 of the 3 sessions are already sold out and seats are limited.
Caleb Grace, developer of The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game:
“Have you ever thought about creating your own custom scenario for The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game? If you have, then you’re in luck because this year’s Gen Con special event, The Wizard’s Quest, is a build-your-own-adventure kit for fans of the game! It comes with everything you need to create your own quest deck and encounter deck.
Each copy of The Wizard’s Quest comes with seven quest cards: one Stage 1, three different Stage 2 options, and three different stage 3 cards. Each player builds their own quest deck by choosing one Stage 2 and one Stage 3 to go with Stage 1. The quest stages that a player chooses will shape the narrative of their entire adventure and help them choose which encounter cards to include in their encounter deck.” [source]
The Wizard’s Quest includes seventy encounter cards split into fourteen different encounter sets of five cards each. There’s a mix of treachery, enemies, and location cards in each encounter set so by combining seven sets you can create your own encounter deck of thirty-five cards. There’s also a cost to each encounter card so once you’ve created your encounter deck you would check that the total cost is not more than twenty-one points … unless you enjoy beat-downs from your enemies.
In a competitive environment, players can create encounter decks to challenge other players and see who can finish each other’s deck first. Many of the encounter cards were created to support this race format.
If you’re unable to participate in the special event at Gen Con you’ll be able to obtain The Wizard’s Quest, along with the Fellowship 2018 scenario, when it’s released at a later date.
