Legendary is the cooperative deck building game system that Upper Deck created in order to have a core game with many different themes. Some of the notable themes include Aliens, Firefly, and Marvel. So when Upper Deck announced they were turning it into an app, people started getting excited at the prospect of a digital version. So Upper Deck has teamed up with the folks at SkyReacher Entertainment to develop the digital version of the Legendary system, this time with a fantasy theme called Legendary DXP. This means all new characters, art, some new mechanisms, and more, but all with the familiar workings of their core deck building system. Some highly desired features have been announced already including solo play, online play, playing with friends, and even a 5 player tournament mode called The Gauntlet. The art is already off to a great start given the look of the Beta Signup Page, and with that having been the biggest complaint on some legendary games, looking at you Firefly, hopes are high for a great digital implementation. So signup for the beta, or wait for the launch of the game in August.
Gale Force 9’s highly rated Firefly board game is getting some new shiny’s added in. The first is a booster pack of cards called Crime & Punishment Game Booster which adds a host of new cards to the Misbehave deck and adds some new elements for the Alliance in the game. One of the new elements are priority alerts for the Alliance, this makes certain aspects of misbehaving very difficult ranging from shutting down a supply planet to forcing contacts to lay low. Also included are two new story cards and two new setup cards, adding more variety and replayability to the game.
The other pack being released is the Big Money Deluxe Accessory, this is a cosmetic upgrade which improves the quality and look for the money included in the game, or any game for that matter. It also includes a new denomination, $5000, for when you really hit the big time! You can preview both of these packs on the Firefly game website, and look for them on store shelves in early 2017.
Fans of the Firefly series are constantly looking for the next shiny game, and Upper Deck is here to satisfy them with Legendary Encounters: A Firefly Deck Building Game.
Designed by Ben Cichoski and Danny Mandel, this cooperative deck building game uses the Legendary Encounters system popularised by the likes of Aliens and Predators and takes it into the Firefly universe. This game will allow players to play as the main crew of Serenity, including the likes of Mal, Inara, River, and more. Avatars that aren’t used will form a Crew deck that can support the players throughout the game. Players will be playing different scenarios, called Episodes, seeking to complete different objectives, gain credits, and win the game.
Legendary Encounters: A Firefly Deck Building Game will be released on August 10th. For additional information, visit Upper Deck’s website here!

Looney Labs was founded in 1996 by Kristin & Andrew Looney, a husband and wife team that gave up successful careers as aerospace engineers (they met while working at NASA) to pursue their hobby business full time. They could tell early on the true hit potential their card game Fluxx had, so they took the jump and quit their day jobs so they could dedicate all their energy to making and promoting Andy’s games. Fellow Browncoats will be excited to hear that Upper Deck has announced Firefly: Shiny Dice is set to be released in August.
Shiny Dice is played over three rounds at the end of which whoever has the most points wins. The rounds involve rolling 15 dice and placing them on your display after any rerolls that you have from crew members or passengers. After your place you dice you reveal your mission, if you are lucky and have dice matching your mission then you skip the risk of having to do what the text on the card that has you ending your turn this round, forcing you to go again, or affects you in some other way. After resolving your mission you have to deal with the bad guy (red) dice. First they strike and do things like hold on to your dice, move your crew/passengers, or KO’s one of your dice. Then you use your remaining crew dice to defeat them. If you defeat them all you score one VP each with half a point for each delivered supply. If you fail to defeat them all you score no points. You’ll have the option to repeat this process leaving out any KO’d passengers/crew but if you fail along the way you score no points that round.
Play as the crew of the Serenity as you complete mission objectives. Do you press your luck for great rewards or risk losing it all to the Alliance?
Get a mission, try to complete it and make money while trying not to get caught. The game lasts three rounds and whoever has the most points after three rounds wins. Declare yourself the “Best in the ‘Verse!”
Shiny Dice will play 1 – 4 players in about 30 minutes. The box will contain 15 custom dice (seven crew, three passenger, and five bad guys), 100 cards, and two full color game mats, various tokens, and a rule book.
