CMON is flying high with their recent offering on the Hong Kong stock exchange, and some of that elation is from a big upcoming release from the current hot designer, Eric Lang. That game is The Godfather: The Board Game, based off the iconic film with all the names and faces you expect, even the infamous Don Corleone. It is being touted as a confrontational worker placement game, with miniatures, where different mafia families are trying to take over the city. To do that you will have to control different rackets, scheme behind your fellow player’s backs, rub out your competition, and even gain the favor of the Don himself. Whoever can best manage the city’s seedy underbelly will be the one to come out on top and be the winner.
Just looking at the cover, the art is looking really good for this game, so props to Karl Kopinski who is doing it all. Release of the game is still a way’s off with a planned 3rd quarter release in 2017.
Deadpool seems to be all over everything geeky these days, and some places in the main stream culture, so of course games about him are coming too. Well, maybe not a game, but an expansion to a highly popular game and that is Marvel Dice Masters: Deadpool. This will bring our beloved anti-hero into the game along with other characters like Lady Deadpool, Dogpool, and Evil Deadpool. Also mentioned is that this set will bring in the “Inhumans, new characters from the Spider-Verse, and more characters from the pages of What If?“. So if you need a bit more sass and breaking of the 4th wall in you dice masters set, then look for these boosters on store shelves in November. For more information you can check out the Wizkids page for preview images of the new cards in the set.
The Diana Jones Award is designed to reward any combination of achievement, innovation, and anything that has benefited or advanced the hobby and industry as a whole; or which has had the greatest positive effect on games and gaming; or which, in the opinion of the judging committee, shows or exemplifies gaming at its best.
This is the description given by the Diana Jones Awards website when asked what they mean by excellence. Thus, in light of the above requirements, they have decided to give this year’s award to Eric Lang for being both prolific and excellent in his designs. This year saw the release of four new games bearing his name, Bloodborne: The Card Game, The Others: 7 Sins, Arcane Academy, and HMS Dolores. And while producing a lot of games can be good, what makes him great is that with each game he designs, they seem to get better and better. This fact can be seen in the consistently high ratings of previous releases like Blood Rage and Dice Masters. So congratulations to Eric Lang, they couldn’t have picked a better person to receive the award. To read more about his winning and to see the other nominees, you can head over to the Diana Jones Awards website.
While not as prolific as other designers like Eric Lang or Reiner Knizia, Goro Hasegawa did make his mark by designing the modern version of the game Reversi that we call Othello. As of last Monday, June 20th, Goro Hasegawa passed away in his home, he was the current chairman of the Japan Othello Association and was planning on attending the World Othello Championship in November, hosted by his organization. To read more on his passing you can look at the article on the Japan Times website.

Not much has been released on the game besides the box cover and some pictures of the board and figures but a Kickstarter for the game will be coming this summer so look forward to that. The Duelyst, a digital collectible card game, has left open beta.
Why are we discussing a digital game? Because one of the designers was board gaming’s very own super star Eric Lang!
Duelyst is a fast-paced collectible card game with a tactical battlefield. Matches last between five and ten minutes, focusing on thoughtful decision-making and rewarding players with new battle units every regular season. Assemble your deck from over 330 cards across 6 unique Factions and test your mettle against other players in ranked season ladder and draft mode tournaments.
Duelyst was designed by Keith Lee (Diablo III, Ratchet & Clank) and our own Eric Lang (XCOM, Blood Rage, Dice Masters, Warhammer, Game of Thrones, The Others: 7 Sins, Bloodborne). The game uses pixel art warriors to create a battlefield where players must use summons and spells to destroy the enemy general. The game feels very much like a collectible digital version of Summoner Wars where the play style revolves around not only building a good deck and playing cards at the right time, but also moving around the board and using strategic placement of units.
You can download the game for free by checking out their homepage: HERE.
The game is currently only for desktop computers, but mobile platforms are said to be coming soon.

Cool Mini or Not, Guillotine Games, Studio McVey, designer Eric Lang, and artist Adrian Smith have teamed up again to bring The Others: 7 Sins to Kickstarter. This is the same design team that brought us the soon to be released Blood Rage. Where Blood Rage was a viking themed game The Others is a horror board game featuring the 7 Deadly Sins.
In The Others: 7 Sins, the world stands on the brink of apocalypse, as the fanatics of the Hell Club have summoned the 7 Deadly Sins to lay waste to our reality. Slowly the Others have creeped into our lives, corrupting society from within. The city of Haven is the key to their invasion, but it will not go down without a fight, thanks to the actions of the paranormal organization known as F.A.I.T.H. (Federal Authority for the Interdiction of Transdimensional Horrors). Each session of The Others is played with one player controlling the forces of a single Sin, again st the other players who control a team of 7 FAITH heroes. The heroes cooperate to survive the Sin’s attacks and accomplish the missions set before them, while the Sin attempts to thwart the heroes in all ways (preferably by destroying them).
As to be expected with Cool Mini or Not involved there are some really fantastic miniatures but the gameplay definitely looks interesting as well…not surprising with Eric Lang involved. There is definitely a lot of variety in the box with different story boards that each play differently and have multiple map set ups that make each individual story unique as well as the different sins punishing the heroes in different ways.
The box comes full of goodies and includes:
- 47 Highly Detailed Figures Including:
- 8 Hero Figures
- 1 Pride Avatar and 1 Sloth Avatar Figures
- 1 Pride Controller and 1 Sloth Controller Figures
- 6 Pride Abomination and 6 Sloth Abomination Figures
- 6 Corrupted Nun Acolyte Figures
- 6 Corrupted Hobo Acolyte Figures
- 6 Corrupted Doctor Acolyte Figures
- 5 Hell Club Figures
- 10 City Tiles
- 6 Boards for the Sins Player (2 Sins, 3 Acolytes, and 1 Apocalypse Track)
- 7 Hero Dashboards
- 70 Cards
- Over 70 Cardboard Tokens
- 27 Sculpted Plastic Tokens
- 7 Story Boards
- 8 Colored Bases
- 14 Custom Dice
The gameplay itself looks like there are some fun and difficult decisions to make during the game, you can watch a game play video on the Kickstarter project page or just click here. The game definitely gets more difficult as it progresses and I like that fact that heroes in the game will die. At the start of the game the non sin players choose 7 starting heroes with each controlling at least one to begin with (lower player counts may find one player controlling more than one hero) with the remainder in reserve. As the game progresses and heroes die a new hero from the pool is brought into the game, at any point if a hero dies and can not be replaced the non sin players loose. To win the non sin players must complete the missions on the story board chosen for that game.
Eric Lang has designed some amazing games that have been released lately like Arcadia Quest, Dice Masters, XCom: The Board Game just to name a few and Cool Mini or Not is known for high funding projects with lots of stretch goals so the expectations for The Others is quite high. While the rule book is not available the game play video does and excellent job of showing how the game works, even if it does run a on the longer side.
If what you read above interests you in any way I highly recommend going to the Kickstarter page to check it out you can find The Others: 7 Sins on Kickstarter here.
