Fantasy Flight Games has announced a new age: a new age of Twilight. Twilight Imperium, that is, in the form of a fourth edition of the epic 4x space strategy game that has been loved and celebrated in the gaming industry for many years. This new edition celebrates 20 years of this epic space opera board game of expansion, diplomacy, and war to control the galaxy, best explained in this excerpt from the official release:
For twenty years, the custom space operas created by Twilight Imperium have thrilled gamers like nothing else. Now, Twilight Imperium Fourth Edition builds on the grand space opera found in previous editions while streamlining rules and putting player interaction center stage…Twilight Imperium Fourth Edition aims to be the most complete version of the game ever printed. Seventeen playable races are included in the game, offering a wide variety of starting faction options. Twilight Imperium Fourth Edition brings a galactic space opera to your table, and no two games will ever be the same.
This new version of the game will include 350 plastic units, 51 system tiles, 561 command and control tokens, 80 action cards, 50 agenda cards, 40 objective cards, 59 planet cards, 184 technology and technology upgrade cards, 41 promissory note cards, and much more.
TI veterans will likely be asking (as I did!) what the main differences are between TI3 and TI4. Some of the main changes include a stunning new graphic design and layout, but with the same great and familiar artwork flavor. Additionally, changes will be seen in game mechanisms such as Trade, Technology, PDS Units, Space Docks, Politics, and the Imperial Strategy Card, to name a few. FFG has anticipated the question of specific changes to the game in their product description, which can be read here.
The game is scheduled for release in the fourth quarter of 2017. To read the entire article that announces the new version of the game, click here.
Grail Games would like to announce the publication of new editions for two classic Reiner Knizia game in 2017: King’s Road and Stephenson’s Rocket.
The following is an excerpt from the official press release:
King’s Road is a re-implementation of Imperium, last published in 2001. It is due to be released mid- 2017, and will feature art by Vincent Dutrait (Medici, Lewis & Clark, Broom Service, etc.) Stephenson’s Rocket, last published in 1999, will feature artwork from Ian O’Toole (The Gallerist, Vinhos, Lisboa, etc.) Grail Games also plans to produce a previously un-released expansion map for Stephenson’s Rocket that features the eastern United States. Both titles are from famed board game designer Dr Reiner Knizia (Medici, Tigris & Euphrates, Samurai, Ra, etc.)
Stephenson’s Rocket, a route-building and bidding game, has a devoted fan-base. Widely considered to be Knizia’s best design not to be re-printed since its original release, this new edition of Stephenson’s Rocket will be highly anticipated. The game, its mechanisms, and goals, will be refreshed and presented in a clear and beautiful art style from famed board game illustrator Ian O’Toole.
“I am very excited to announce the upcoming release of these titles,” said publisher David Harding. “The new presentation of Stephenson’s Rocket and its expansion will please current fans and attract new ones, while King’s Road, with its fast play time and meaty choices, will deserve a place in any gamer’s collection. We are so pleased to be able to continue releasing great games from one of our greatest designers.”

Fans of the original adventure and survival game Robinson Crusoe: Adventures on the Cursed Island will be interested to know what specific changes will be present in Portal’s new release of the game under the Portal banner. In 2013, the original Guildhall card game was met with critical acclaim, winning Boardgames Australia Awards Best International Game and the Fairplay À la carte award as well as being nominated for the Golden Geek Best Card Game and being Kennerspiel des Jahres Recommended in 2014. However, AEG felt that the theme of the original Guildhall, which featured medieval peasants and merchant class people, was not very evocative and limited the game’s audience.
So when the time came to reboot this popular game, AEG decided to go with a fantasy theme that featured 18 character classes from some of their favorite role-playing games. This reboot will contain a series of three different sets, formed by mixing up the previous two sets and adding six more cards to the mix.
Here is AEG’s official summary of the new release of the game:
In Guildhall players play different colored Profession cards into their Guildhalls, each which grants a special ability to build your own Guildhalls or to tear your opponent’s Guildhalls down. As players collect different colors in each profession, the abilities on the Profession cards increase in power and usefulness. When a player collects one of each of the 5 colors of a given profession they may trade that completed Guildhall for a Victory Point cards, which have abilities of their own and grant Victory Point points to the player. The first player to collect 20 VP points is the winner.
- Cards and rules are taken from the award winning, critical acclaimed, and Kennerspiel des Jahres Recommended Guildhall Old World Economy and Guildhall Job Faire releases.
- New fantasy theme and new profession art from Gunship Revolution.
- Sold in three sets, each released one month after the other.
- Releases may be combined and played together in one big Mega Saga deck or different – Professions may be combined to create custom play experiences, including the original Old World Economy and Job Faire releases.
- Great card game mechanics allow for card combos and tactical decision making.
- Reduced price point from previous releases.
The three new sets will be called Guildhall Fantasy: Fellowship (street date June 2016), Guildhall Fantasy: Alliance (street date July 2016), and Guildhall Fantasy: Coalition (street date August 2016). For more information on this new release, visit the three blogs posted on AEG’s site here.

Your goal is to build a new State in this post-apocalyptic world. Whether you command merciless Mutants or brave New Yorkers, your aim is always simple and clear – conquer new lands, incorporate new regions, and destroy everyone who is of no value. How will you achieve this? It’s pretty simple – the highest score wins the game. Pretty novel, huh?
Portal Games is currently running a preorder campaign for the revitalization of their hit card game 51st State in the form of the 51st State Master Set. 51st State is a competitive game that takes place in the unforgiving, post-apocalyptic work of Neuroshima Hex. In the game, players take control of a faction such as New York, Appalachian Federation, Mutants Union, or the Merchants Guild and, by levying the power of his faction, build a new state: a 51st state.
The core design and mechanisms of the game resemble that of Portal’s popular game Imperial Settlers, which is itself a redesign of the core mechanisms of the original 51st State card game. The new 51st State Master Set will include a complete redesign of the original version of 51st State, as well as new editions of New Era and Winter, the original expansions for the game. The boxed set includes:
- 1 Victory Point Board
- 200 Cards
- 88 Base Set Cards
- 12 Connection Cards
- 50 New Era Cards
- 50 Winter Cards
- 4 Victory Point Markers
- 1 First Player Token
- 4 Faction Boards
- Goods Markers
- 38 Brick resource pieces
- 38 Fuel resource pieces
- 30 Gun resource pieces
- 38 Iron resource pieces
- 38 Workers pieces
- 10 Shield Tokens
- 13 Bullet Tokens
- 9 Development Tokens
- 20 Red Contact Tokens
- 20 Blue Contact Tokens

Asmodee gave an exciting new announcement this week at the GAMA Trade Show in Las Vegas: a new edition of Reiner Knizia’s fast-paced auction game, Ra. In the game, players compete to build the best Ancient Egyptian civilization by using actions to acquire tiles. Tiles collected represent cultural achievements, architectural wonders, Ancient Egyptian deities, and even the Nile itself. Player turns involve either adding to the pool of tiles or “invoking Ra” to hold an auction to bid on tiles. The player with the most points at the end of the game is the winner. The game is for 2-5 players and plays in under an hour.
The game will be released by a new publishing studio in the Asmodee Group, WindRider Games. This new edition features an all new graphic design based on the art of Ancient Egypt, and is the third game in the Euro Classics line, which WindRider is taking over from Fantasy Flight Games.
Steven Kimball, head of WindRider Games, expressed his excitement that Ra would be WindRider’s first release. “It’s one of Dr. Knizia’s most beloved designs because of its high amount of player interaction and the difficult decisions that create tense, dramatic gaming moments,” said Kimball.
Ra is scheduled for release in the second quarter of 2016.
