Edge of Extinction

event-horizon

Some very exciting news from NSKN games was announced today! The next expansion in their, very popular, “Exodus” line-up has been announced: Event Horizon. Exodus: Proxima Centauri was a very popular and exciting 4x game released in 2012. It earned a Dice Tower Seal of Excellence (review found here) and was followed with a huge big-box expansion called Exodus: Edge of Extinction (review found here). Well Event Horizon promises to please both old fans and newcomers alike.

Event Horizon is fully enjoyable with the base game of Exodus: Proxima Centauri, or along with Edge of Extinction, the previously released first expansion for Exodus. Even though all ten modules therein are compatible with one another and can be used together, each represents a new or enhanced experience. While some modules integrate seamlessly, others will surprise and engage you in brand new modes of play.

To find out more about the upcoming release you can read the entire press release here. You can also visit their web site here  or follow them on Twitter here.

So the Dice Tower kicked Day 1 off with a bang. For those not familiar with the early mornings of the convention, the doors open to exhibitors at 8am followed, on day 1, to the VIPs at 9am. 10 o’clock welcomes the masses. Mysterium, from Asmodee, seemed to be the big hit- having sold out before 9:20.

IMAG0776One of the big hits was the display of upcoming Mice & Mystics product line games – Tail Feathers. Jerry Hawthorne, designer, was demoing the unique tilt mechanism used for the flying birds. In this sky and land battle game the birds will actually have removable “flyer” minis. Tail Feathers will hopefully be released sometime around, if not at, Essen.

One of my favorite parts of the day was getting to meet the folks over at NSKN. I got to meet with Agnieszka Kopera and Andrei Novac (Designer and Artist along with founders of NSKN) to get a look at the HUGE BOX expansion to Exodus entitled Edge of Extinction. It’s a GORGEOUS expansion to an already wonderful game. You can watch Tom’s review of the revised edition of the base game here. And if that wasn’t already exciting enough, I got a sneak peak at only 1 of 2 copies of Mistfall – a cooperative adventure game hopefully due out at Essen. It’s got some top-notch components and features some beautiful artwork – tons of cards!!

Portal Games had quite a few releases this year including Rattle, Battle, & Loot – a fun, light-hearted pirate-themed game. Also available was the drafting game Tides of Time and the Imperial Settlers expansion Atlanteans.

IMAG0788Sure to be a hit, from Pretzel Games, is Flick ’em Up. In this scenario-driven game, you use dexterity to flick (shoot) opponents and move around the board. An expansion has already been announced that will add ramps and horses. You can watch Tom Vasel’s review here.

Another fun stop was to the Chip Theory Games booth where they had, on display, their Hoplomachus line of products. I got to tell you, the chips are of a VERY high quality and the game play is quite fun. They had their, recently successful Kickstarter project, Origins on display.

If you’re at the convention, don’t forget to visit the Dice Tower booth. Although located at the very back of the hall, it’s definitely been flooded with traffic. You can meet and greet the entire gang first thing in the morning(s). Stop by and pick up any of the various promos on display along with dice towers, t-shirts, play-mats, and tons of other memorabilia.

Exodus Edge of Extinction

NSKN Games has announced a long-awaited expansion for their space “4X” board game, Exodus: Proxima Centauri.

Lead one of six unique, fully developed and beautifully illustrated factions with their own histories, strengths, unique special abilities and a set of new, exclusive technologies.

Play as the Sirius Theocracy, cunning and deceptive masters of politics bound together by a mutual belief in a benevolent deity.

Or, you may select the role of the Arctic Dominion, shrewd businessmen who follow the mantra that if there is a price on anything, and if it is the right price, they can deliver.  And there is a price on everything.

Players may also select the role of the Han-Xia Dynasty, masters of adapting to new environments, making them effective at adapting Centurian technology.  Additionally, their cruel but frighteningly effective methods of training pilots makes their space fleets something to be truly feared.

The Titan Diarchy is a faction that allows players to control the true masters of scientific research and technological development.  They believe that it is through the progress of science that humanity will truly learn to live in peace, and they will seek peaceful resolutions to conflict when they can.

The Solaris Confederation is a faction that just wants to be left alone in peace.  They are committed, however, to end any fights others begin with technological surprises and mysterious conflict resolutions.

The Blackwater faction is built around a vast economical power, and is what is left of a secret organization on Earth.  Blackwater seeks to, quite simply, conquer space and become the supreme rulers of humanity.

Exodus: the Edge of Extinction is a an expansion worthy of the base game, introducing asymmetric powers and new game play options to the critically acclaimed Exodus: Proxima Centauri Revised Edition. Bigger fleets, custom action cards, novel technologies and completely new mechanisms like the Combat Cards add a whole new layer to the spectrum of strategies already available in the base game.

  • 44 combat cards
  • 25 resistance combat cards
  • 15 political cards
  • 15 resistance cards
  • 30 population cubes
  • 50+ cardboard markers
  • rules sheet for the expansion

The Kickstarter for this project includes multiple stretch goals, such as double-sided player aids, a solo-player expansion, signed lithographs, and additional cards, miniatures, and dice.

As of this posting, this Kickstarter project currently has met nearly $20,000 of its $28,000 goal with 20 days remaining for the funding period.  For more information or to support this project, visit the Kickstarter page here.

blackwater

NSKN Games posted its final faction preview for Exodus: Edge of Extinction, the upcoming expansion for space 4X game Exodus: Proxima Centauri. This time they spotlight Blackwater, a dangerous faction focused on war and all out aggression.

“Blackwater is the most conflict oriented faction in Edge of Extinction. Their whole existence revolves around a single goal – their total domination over mankind.”

They have the technology to back it up with EMP Cannons, Interceptors, Phasium Alloy, and other intimidating upgrades. The article includes a detailed description of Blackwater, noting their economic prowess, disinterest in humanitarian laws, and their relentless pursuit of corporate power.

“Blackwater is a goal oriented faction – perhaps even the single most objective-focused one in this new world – and the goal is to make the final transition from an almost all powerful organization to a truly omnipotent one.”

Blackwater joins the Sirius Theocracy, Arctic Dominion, Han-Xia Dynasty, Titan Diarchy, and Confederation of Sol bringing the new faction count to six. Check out NSKN’s blog post for more details, and watch Dice Tower’s review for our opinions on Exodus: Proxima Centauri.
