Eclipse

Exodus: Proxima Centauri (2012) is a well loved 4X (Explore, Expand, Exploit, Exterminate) space empire building game for 2-6 players by designers Agnieszka Kopera and Andrei Novac, as well as a recipient of a Dice Tower Seal of Excellence. NSKN Games has just launched a massive reboot of this classic game along with its two expansions, Event Horizon and Edge of Extinction, on Kickstarter. The new Exodus Chronicles, designed by Rainer Ahlfors and Andrei Novac scratches all the right itches, with 6 different player factions, a robust tech tree system, 45 custom dice, 350 wooden cubes, 280 acrylic gems, 33 large sector tiles, hundreds of tokens and cards, and over 130 detailed ship miniatures. Exodus uses a lead-follow action system, minimizing downtime, while still competing with other well known space opera 4X games such as Twilight Imperium or Eclipse, often in a shorter time frame. This time tested game system keeps improving with each iteration, and Exodus: Chronicles is no exception, keeping the game tight, modern and involving. The Kickstarter for Exodus Chronicles continues through April 12, and the game is expected to ship to backers in April 2020. Eclipse has been one of the stand out 4x games since its release in 2011, consistently rating in the top three of the type and always within the top 100 games on BoardGameGeek. Its closest peer within the class, Twilight Imperium, was released in 1997 but has benefitted from 4 major revisions since that time.  Eclipse has had several expansions, but no revisions since its release.  No more!  An new Kickstarter from Kolossal Games has been opened that will update and expand the original version to create Eclipse: Second Dawn for the Galaxy.

“Second Dawn”, as the name might indicate, will go well beyond an update or minor revision and is therefore being billed as a game of it’s own.  It will have game play and art that will be familiar to fans, but will include an extensive number of revisions to streamline play. The producers have kindly posted a list of the revisions to the game for long time fans that want to consider upgrading.

Just some of the components. Head to the KS to see them all at the various pledge levels

The Kickstarter includes quite the array of deluxe components, including special trays to organize play, and a larger number of modeled ships and minis than the original version.  There is also a Galactic Counselor level pledge that will provide additional upgrades for those  who are ready to make the investment.  Language throughout the page indicates that the offering is a ‘retail version’ of the game. At this time nothing  indicates any Kickstarter exclusives but that could always. It looks like those not ready to fire the plasma cannons will still be able to get the game retail some day.

Visit the Kickstarter page and Kolossal Games for more information.

Eclipse is a highly popular 4X game, sitting comfortably at number 21 on the BoardGameGeek’s ranking for ALL GAMES, and carries an impressive rating of 8 out of 10.  But just because it’s doing well doesn’t mean it couldn’t be improved, and that is what Lautapelit.fi is going to do.  In 2018 they will be releasing Eclipse 2.0 with lots of improvements and upgrades like:

• New graphic design, maintaining the acclaimed symbology of the 1st edition
• Introductory short story by award winning science fiction novelist Johanna Sinisalo, providing rich background for the world of Eclipse
• Full line of Ship Pack 1 miniatures
• New miniatures for ancients, GCDS, orbitals and more
• Custom made plastic inlays
• Custom combat dice
• Fine tuned game play

So if your current edition is getting worn out or you just want the latest and greatest, be on the lookout for it in 2018.  You can read the press release below for more info.

20 October 2017 – Lautapelit.fi is proud to announce that Eclipse, the multiple award winning grail game of the 4-X genre, is about to get a serious overhaul.

How can the best be made better? Since the launch of Eclipse in 2011, the game has had a wide and inspiring fan community that has actively provided feedback to us and the designers both directly as well as through on-line communities. The 2nd edition is a response to those hopes and wishes with no effort withheld.

The upgraded edition of Eclipse will include, among others:
• New graphic design, maintaining the acclaimed symbology of the 1st edition

• Full line of Ship Pack 1 miniatures
• New miniatures for ancients, GCDS, orbitals and more
• Custom made plastic inlays
• Custom combat dice
• Fine tuned game play

The second edition will be available to players around the world in 2018 once the game has been crafted to perfection.

march of ants box

March of the Ants is a insect themed 4X game (explore, expand, exploit, exterminate) that was successfully Kickstarted two years ago and received good reviews, selling out of their first print run in under a year.  Now Weird City Games has put up a Kickstarter for the expansion, Minions of the Meadow, to be able to deepen the experience while still maintaining the aspects that made the base game successful.  In March of the Ants you are the leader of an ant colony and it is your duty to expand you territory through exploration, make sure your colony is fed by finding food sources, evolving your ant into something stronger, and battling other colonies to be the best.  Minions of the Meadow adds several new aspects to the game including:

  • Major Workers – Each Colony can breed Major Workers, larger ants who evolve with your colony. Use their powers to scout the best territory or lead your armies to war.
  • Aphids – Send your ants to find aphids and form a symbiotic relationship. Herd them to new hexes where they will have more space to grow and provide greater harvests.
  • Tactics – Play Tactics like Feint, Ferocious Expansion and Savage Cannibals to catch your opponent by surprise and turn the tide of battle.
  • Parasitic Evolutions – Infect your opponent’s ants and override their most powerful evolutions.
  • Predators – Summon the Centipede Broodmother and the Trapdoor Spider, terrible beasts who stalk the meadow.
  • Into The Lair – Venture forth to hunt for the Centipede Broodmother in the new solo and co-op game.

These new modules will enhance the game and still keep it a short set-up with a manageable length of just over an hour, much shorter than it’s sci-fi cousins Twilight Imperium and Eclipse.  If this kind of game sounds interesting to you, head on over to the campaign page to pledge for you copy, and if you don’t have the base game, then you can pledge for a copy of that at the same time as well.
