The biggest push in bringing board gaming to mobile devices and PCs has no doubt come from Asmodee, or specifically Asmodee Digital. We’ve written about this quite a few times on this site, and in fact one of my very first articles I wrote for Dice Tower News was about Asmodee doing really cool things to bring good games to a broader market. While we do have to rely on their analysis and apparent drive to see how effective their efforts have been, the spread of board gaming to virtual platforms is undoubtedly healthy for the community and industry as a whole if only for exposure reasons. This is why it’s such big news that Asmodee has partnered with Kingnet to bring their titles to the Chinese market. As announced by Asmodee:

“Asmodee, a leading global games publisher and distributor, today announced it has entered into a strategic partnership with Kingnet, a preeminent Chinese mobile games development studio and internet content and services provider. Founded in 2008, Kingnet operates many popular games including Skyscraper, Shushan Legend and MU Miracle. Through this partnership, Kingnet will license select Asmodee content and develop and distribute original mobile games for the growing Chinese user base.”

This is no small matter, as that kind of exposure to that large of a market is bound to grow interest in strategy and social gaming, and can also inspire those players towards new designs. Despite how crazy Asmodee’s outreach and growth may seem over the past few years, we have to congratulate them and Kingnet for seeking new horizons like this. My curiosity is now poised on what effect, if any, this push will have on the counterfeit board games issue. While Asmodee’s partnership with Kingnet is unrelated, that particular industry could change as more and more games gain outreach. We’ll have to wait and see!

Ares Games and Polish board game company Galakta have announced a partnership to begin distributing Galakta products globally outside of Europe.

Ares games will begin distributing Galakta games including This War of Mine The Board GameAge of Thieves, Ragers Champions of the Arena, Zombie Terror, Andromeda, and King & Assassins.

Director of R&D at Ares Games, Roberto Di Meglio, expressed that Ares Games found strong brand alignment between the two companies and the benefits of the Ares Games distribution network:

Ares started developing a strong US and worldwide distribution for our products six years ago, and we now feel we are able to provide a good service to our customers, and to our partner Galakta, by promoting their games together with ours. Games such as This War of Mine The Board Game and Age of Thieves and the rest of Galakta’s releases are very consistent with our product and design philosophy, and we are committed to make them a success in the North American market and around the world.

Galakta owner Dariusz Waszkiewicz is excited to get these games to new markets:

For the last 13 years, we have succeeded in building a very strong position on Polish board game market and a few years ago, we started developing our own titles. We have worked several times with the Ares Games team on some of their great titles, and at the same time, we could see how they were growing outside Europe. We are convinced that thanks to this extended relationship our games will become available to many board game fans all over the World.

The Ares and Galakta partnership first started 5 years ago with Galakta publishing Polish editions of War of the Ring, with additional Polish editions of The Battle of Five Armies and Jolly Roger.

Markorama Games, a game store located in Franklin, New Jersey, has sent out a letter to their customers and friends explaining that they unfortunately must close their store due to Asmodee‘s policy of not allowing brick and mortar stores to sell their products online.  In the letter they state:

“In January 2016, Asmodee changed their policies and forbid brick and mortar stores from selling online. We tried complying with this policy but within a few months got into a huge financial crisis and needed to do something or close the store. We decided to continue selling online for as long as we could and try to dig ourselves out of the financial hole we dug ourselves into. A few weeks ago, Asmodee discovered we were selling online and ordered us to cease and desist. We are currently complying with their policy, but as a result, we have no choice but to close the store.”

The full text of the letter is on Markorama’s Facebook page.

The Asmodee policy was described in an overview blog on BoardGameGeek (BGG).  There are also several active forum threads on the DiceTower forums on BGG discussing this policy in general (here and here).  Tom Vasel talked about it on DiceTower Podcast #440 at minute 55:40 where it was the question of the week which includes comments from several other reviewers.

The prestigious and coveted Spiel des Jahres award nominees are once again receiving great attention, the three nominees for 2015 being Machi Koro (IDW Games), Colt Express (Ludonaute) and the lesser-known-in-North-America card game The Game (Nürnberger-Spielkarten-Verlag and IDW Games).

IDW Games has announced that they will be publishing the game in North America under the same title, The Game.  The Game is a cooperative card game for 1-5 players in which cards are played into one of four different piles with the hopes of discarding all 98 cards.  Players are not, however, allowed to share what cards they have with the other players, which can upset the best laid plans.

The Game is scheduled to become available in September of 2015.
