dice masters

Wizkids is adding a trilogy of new sets to the Dungeons and Dragons: Dice Masters line of collectible dice games, this time focusing on the city of Waterdeep. Waterdeep has become a wealth of legend and lore in the Dungeons and Dragons mythos, and now Eric Lang and Mike Elliott‘s classic Dice Master is incorporating characters and monsters from this iconic city.

D&D Dice Masters: Trouble in Waterdeep is a 2 player Campaign Box containing everything needed to play a complete game, including Sidekick Dice, Action Dice, rules and dice bags. This set includes over a dozen characters, including Xanathar, Manshoon’s spies, and Volo.

The D&D Dice Masters: Adventures in Waterdeep Team Pack contains 24 cards and 16 dice for those already familiar with Dice Masters, and can be paired with any Campaign Box or Starter Set. Characters in this pack include Brawlwin Chainminer, the Black Viper, Jarlaxle, and Durnan, as well as many others making their first appearance. Similarly, D&D Dice Masters: The Zhentarim Team Pack includes Manshoon, Istrid Horn, and Ziraj, as well as many other Zhentarim in its 16 dice and 24 cards.

Look for all three Waterdeep themed Dice Master sets at your FLGS in September 2019.

The Warhammer 40,000 Dice Masters: Fracture of Biel-Tan Campaign Box is the first, big box expansion for Warhammer 40,000: Battle for Ultramar. In Dice Masters, 2 players make use of a team of characters who are represented by cards, to combat each other through card effects and dice rolls. The Dice Masters engine was developed by Mike Elliott, and Eric M. Lang, when they originally created Quarriors! for WizKids.

This expansion features characters such as the Daemons of Chaos and Skarbrand the Ynnari, The Masque of Slaanesh, The Yncarne, and Yvraine. The Campaign Box includes Sidekick dice, Basic Action dice, rules, and dice bags for two players to create teams comprised of Daemons of Chaos or Ynnari, or a mixture of them both.

To further expand play options for the game, players can also purchase the Warhammer 40,000 Dice Masters: Blood Angels – Black Rage team pack. This expansion features the Blood Angels and special units such as Commander Dante, the Death Company, and Sanguinary Priests. If that’s not enough, the Warhammer 40,000 Dice Masters: Dark Angels — The First team pack adds the legendary Dark Angels. Special units such as Fallen Angel, Cypher, and the Deathwing Knight join the fray. Both packs contain 3 different versions of each character includes 24 cards, with 16 dice.

These expansions are expected to release around March of 2019.

It appears the first WWE branded content from WizKids will arrive in 2019.

This year, WizKids have switched the Dice Masters release model from that of blind booster pack purchases to a defined set in the form of expansion packs or campaign boxes. Recently their first campaign box, Avengers Infinity Dice Masters, was released (and you can get more information on it in Tom’s review of the game). However, it sorely lacked many of the beloved mutant superheroes so X-Men Forever Dice Masters seeks to rectify that situation and is packed full of characters from the X-Men, Brotherhood, Hellfire Club, and other beloved mutant teams.

Dice Masters was originally designed by Eric M. Lang and Mike Elliot and is a 2-player dice game where players pit teams of heroes and villains against each other in dice battle. The set will contain more than a dozen characters and their dice and is intended for players aged 14+. Games last roughly 30 minutes.

Expect the X-Men Forever Dice Masters Campaign Box to be released on November 1st, 2018.

Long before Dice Masters was a twinkle in WizKids eye, Quarriors!, designed by Mike Elliot and Eric M. Lang, was the granddaddy of Dice Building games. It followed traditional releases in the form of big boxes for each expansion.

Dice Masters followed later but with a different release system in that you bought starter boxes and booster packs to expand your collection. They started dabbling in mini-releases such as Team Packs (like Spider-Man: Maximum Carnage and Dr Strange) and even released two big box standalone expansions for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Given the demand for the standalone expansions, Wizkids will be releasing the Avengers Infinity and Warhammer 40,000 Campaign Boxes.

According to Wizkids:

By shifting the focus of how players buy Dice Masters to non-blind product, we’re trying to lower the barrier to entry for fans who are interested in trying the game fresh or maybe exploring one of the IPs in the game they haven’t tried yet. [source]

The campaign boxes offer a lot of value. Each one has 48 different character cards which could be used to build hundreds of different thematic teams. There are also 10 Basic Action Cards to add variety. Adding in Team Packs will allow players to customize their teams even further. Campaign Boxes are able to store over 300 dice and their matching cards which means it can accommodate the basic set along with 10 added Team Packs.

Cards in the Campaign Boxes are also going to have their Max dice based on the game play but tournament play will be kept in mind when these are released instead of the stifling maximum previously designed into previous non-blind releases.

For more details on the upcoming Campaign Boxes check out the Wizkids Dice Masters page for details.

When the partnership between Wizkids and Games Workshop was announced, one of the things mentioned was the creation of a new dice game set in the Warhammer 40K universe.  People, me included, speculated that it would be a dice masters game given it’s success and ease of re-theming.  Well now we have confirmation, Warhammer 40K Dice Masters is coming in July of next year.  This will come in the form of a new starter set based around the battle for Ultramar campaign in the 40K universe, easily enough called Warhammer 40K Dice Masters: Battle for Ultramar Campaign Box.  Included in the set will be the Ultramarine faction and the Deathguard faction along with all the basic action cards and dice you will need to field a two player game.  Also being released at the same time will be two team packs, one called Orcs WAARGH! which brings in the uncontrollable Orcs, and the other called Space Wolves, Sons of Russ that brings in the Space Wolves Space Marine fighting force.  Each team pack comes with cards for that faction and all the dice for those cards, but they will have to be combined with the base game in order to play the game as they don’t have any basic dice or action cards.  One final thing to note, they did mention that these are compatible with all the other Dice Masters sets, meaning you can live the crossover dream and have Superman lead a team of space marines and ninja turtles into battle together!

You can find out more about the Dice Masters game on Wizkids’ website, through the many Youtube reviews of different sets from the Dice Tower, or just patiently wait 7 months for their release.

Force Friday 2 has come and gone, and with it the release of a new Star Wars game from FFG, a two player boxed set of Star Wars Destiny.  Fantasy Flight Games was rather hush about this release and wouldn’t even let brick-and-mortar stores about what exactly was going to be released that Friday (stores had to blindly go in on knowing they were releasing some sort of a Star Wars game that day).

Star Wars Destiny is the collectible dice game being put out by FFG as a competitor to Dice Masters.  In the game you will build a deck based on a set amount of points and dice, and then take your band of characters and equipment into battle against someone else.  Drawing and rolling dice on your turn in order to activate the many abilities of the cards you have.  In this new box set you will get enough cards, tokens, and dice to play the game right out of the box.  Plus, for those who are veterans to the game, this new box also features unique characters that haven’t been released like new versions of Captain Phasma, Kylo Ren, Rey, and Poe Dameron.  So whether you are just getting into the game or have been around for a while, this new boxed set is worth a look.

You can find out my information on FFG website, or go to your FLGS and pick it up today!

Origins has come and gone, and with it the announcements of various awards.  We have covered the announcement of the Origins Awards and so the only one left is to announce who was inducted in to the hall of Fame this year.  And that person is Mike Elliott, designer of highly popular titles like the Dice Masters line, Quarriors, Lost Legends and more.  Mike Elliott has been designing for 21 years and is still going strong with new designs like Thunderstone Quest and Immortals coming soon from AEG and Queen respectively.  The award couldn’t have gone to a better pick and we hope to see more and more great games from him in the future.

Hot on the heels of the announcement for the Tomb of Annihilation setting for Dungeons and Dragons, Wizkids have announced a new game and expansion.  The new game was the rumored Adventure System game from before, and now we know it’s Dungeons & Dragons: Tomb of Annihilation Adventure System Board Game.  This game will be released later this summer and will feature cooperative campaign play like in the previous games and will focus itself on the new setting.  The biggest change though has nothing to do with gameplay though, but the minis, and that is the addition of a deluxe version of the game.  So like with the Assault of the Giants game, you can purchase a standard game with unpainted minis, or the deluxe game for fully painted minis.  Either way I am looking forward to this new game in the Adventure System line.

The expansion that was announced is the next set for the Dice Masters game, Dungeons & Dragons Dice Masters: Tomb of Annihilation.  This will expand the Dungeons and Dragons section of the game will more heroes, monsters, gear, and spells from the new setting.  Best of all there is also a new basic action card you can get that will change gameplay significantly.  You can look for this set to release this fall, and you can head over to the Wizkids site to read more about everything being released.
