The next big title from Stronghold Games has a deluxe edition now on Kickstarter! From designers Bobby West and Alan R. Moon, the esteemed creator of Ticket to Ride, comes Aftershock – a competitive area control game for 3-to-5 players. The story goes that the San Francisco Bay area has been rocked with earthquakes so you are trying rebuild infrastructure and repopulate the city in relative safety in spite of the destruction. What comes from this is a drafting and hidden action selection game mixed with a little bit of route building to create something that may sound familiar, but is all-together different than anything on the market today.
“In Aftershock, players will spend money to acquire planning cards, which are used to increase population, build bridges, and determine where aftershocks occur. Spend money wisely to acquire aftershocks that will allow you to move people into and out of the demolished areas. Planning and careful negotiation are essential in order to maintain your population and score your best-planned cities and bridges.”
There’s a bit of mind-gaming to this one that makes it really click. While the actions you can take are public and bought from one another (drafted in a way that may remind of Isle of Skye), the targets of those actions are hidden and victim to turn order, which will lead to a lot of twisted thinking as you try to anticipate where your opponents will go so you can take advantage of their situation. You can see that Alan Moon touch to the game in the drafting and route connections, but can see that this collaborative effort has brought about something much more intriguing than his older network-building fare. The newest game from Quined Games and designers Paulo Soledade and Nuno Bizarro Sentieiro, two men behind Nippon, Madeira, and Panamax, is now on Kickstarter. La Stanza is a tactical area movement game where 2-to-4 players move about a 16th century mansion collecting and enlisting the help of characters in order to specialize in a few key tracks of influence for points. The theme is a bit odd to say the least, because the characters are paintings, but then you can hire…the paintings, and you’re hiring them to do better at religion, or politics, or…sailing, all without leaving this house. However, theme aside, this is really close to (but not quite) a rondel game like Antike or Trajan, and that is awesome!
“A 16th century mansion is the setting for this game, you’ll acquire paintings of well-known individuals, like William Shakespeare or Michelangelo. Each of these paintings will give you a special action in one of five rooms. You need to have these paintings in your personal supply to perform the corresponding action.”
It’s hard to get that impression about this game at first, because this area movement mechanism is layered beneath an attractive classical look. Yet it’s there and very well implemented, as you will have to manage where you go to pick up resources (characters) to strengthen specific actions they’re tied to within other rooms (areas of influence), and you can only move clockwise 1-to-4 spaces each turn. Oh, and money and space are tight, so you’ll have to be very careful what you pick up and where you land, and you’ll need to specialize in only a few areas to do well while your opponents do the same. What’s more is that Quined Games has definitely given this game a look worthy of a deluxe edition with metal coins and custom wooden pieces, and that’s precisely what is available only during this Kickstarter campaign. Tidal Blades: Heroes of the Reef, from Druid City Games, funded on the first day of its Kickstarter campaign. Tidal Blades: Heroes of the Reef is the first game set in a new world designed by Lina Cossette and David Forest, also known collectively as Mr. Cuddington. You may have seen their beautiful artwork in Brass: Lancashire, Santorini, Brass: Birmingham, Charterstone, Steampunk Rally, Super Motherload, Unfair, and The Grimm Forest.
In Tidal Blades: Heroes of the Reef, players are citizens of an island realm, gathering in the City of Naviri, competing to earn the title of Tidal Blade, an elite guardian of the Islands. The tournament takes place over the course of five days. During the day, contestants spend energy to take actions that allow them to gather resources, travel to locations to earn bonuses, and compete in challenges. During the night, contestants defend the city against a monster invasion, then upgrade their characters and prepare for the next day of contests.
Players will play one of four unique characters, each with their own special powers. Each player also has a dice pool, and the dice can be upgraded to more powerful and consistent results depending one which power they want to focus on. Dice are rolled and spent to complete challenges and defeat monsters. Some monsters will require the efforts of all players to defeat.
At the end of five days, the player with the most points is the winner, but this will not be the last you hear of these heroes because they will also be featured in the second part of this game world: Tidal Blades: The Rise of the Unfolders, that will shortly follow the release of this game.
Tidal Blades: Heroes of the Reef plays 1-4 (solo mode recently added), ages 14+ in 60-90 minutes. Contents include 4 player boards, 5 standees, 32 character cards, 16 energy discs, 54 custom dice, 3 danger dice, 40 fruit tokens, 40 shell tokens, 21 stunt cards, 5 location boards, 24 market cards, 54 challenge cards, a boat token, a round tracker, a first player token, 6 monster cards, a monster die, and 64 hit tokens. Gentres, designed by Stephen Risthaus, is being Kickstarted now by Tasty Minstrel Games and will be getting the Deluxified™ treatment.
Gentres is a civilization game for 2-4 players and will last around 90 minutes. In this game, players take the role of an ancient people who are attempting to develop their society by building monuments and colonizing or founding new cities in the Mediterranean sea.
The game lasts 6 rounds with each round consisting of two phases. During the Heyday phase, players will carry out their actions using two precious commodities (coins and time). The more you spread out the time tokens, the fewer actions you can perform. However if you combine time tokens, you can carry out more actions this round but fewer next round. Once all players pass, the Decline phase begins which is where clean-up and setup for the next round takes place.

OMEN: Reign of War is a highly rated two player, area control card game where two sons of Zeus are fighting over three cities in a bid to gain his favor. On any given turn you will be drawing cards or gathering coins, and with those coins play down the various cards you have. They can be special ability cards, feat cards, reward cards, or the core card of the game, soldier cards. The soldier cards are what you play to each individual city and once a certain threshold is reached the city becomes war-torn. At that point the strengths of the troop cards are totaled and whoever has the highest gets to take a reward form the city. Each city has a stack of three reward cards and once two of the cities have been depleted the game will end. You will get points for each reward card based on where it is and each completed feat card, whoever has the most points is the winner.
This edition being Kickstarted is a straight reprint of the last edition, the Omega Edition, which brought the entire game into one box. What makes this one special is that the box will be black with embossed gold art and lettering, and the coins have been upgraded from cardboard to custom metal coins. The campaign is super short so if you haven’t already checked it out, I suggest heading over to the campaign page before it ends on the 18th.
Rivals for Catan is the 2-player implementation of the classic Catan game and has each player building their own city in front of them with cards instead of on a central board, however, resources are still given out based on the roll of a die. The original game came with some “theme games” in the box to play and two expansions were made for the game, Age of Darkness and Age of Enlightenment, as well as a myriad of promo cards. In the Deluxe edition of the game, in terms of the components not much has changed except for the addition of a card tray for the central stacks of cards. The new deluxe edition includes all three expansions and nine hard-to-find promotional cards. Look for this game from Catan Studio in September, and you can read the announcement on the ICv2 site.
Roxley Games, the publishers of popular games such as Steampunk Rally and Super Motherload, have announced a new agreement with veteran board game designer Martin Wallace for the right to reprint his classic economic game Brass. While the details of the agreement have not yet been finalized, the new version of the game is intended to launch on Kickstarter sometime in quarter 2 or 3 of 2016 and will include new artwork, deluxe component upgrades and a completely new map, developed in cooperation with Wallace. The new map will be set in the Birmingham area and feature new industries such as breweries as well as some new rules and mechanisms.
After the Kickstarter is fulfilled, the game will also be made available in stores, including all the new game content, but without the deluxe component upgrades.
