Gen7: A Crossroads Game, coming soon to a store near you, is a grand narrative game with a massive branching path, where the choices players make will alter the direction of the story. Gen7 uses the Crossroads mechanic, previously seen in the Dead of Winter games, which constantly challenge players with a variety of unique situations that will force them to make difficult moral decisions.
Plaid Hat Games has announced a new game set in the Raxxon Pharmaceuticals universe. Simply titled Raxxon, the newest game is a cooperative game where players seek to evacuate the healthy and quarantine or eliminate those infected at the start of the zombie apocalypse players have come to know through Dead of Winter.
Up until this point, Raxxon was only available by private invite from other who had already purchased the game. This “viratl marketing” technique was the talk of the community for weeks as people used social media to advertise their invites available or to ask if anyone had one available.
Raxxon finds the players working cooperatively at the very start of the Zombie Outbreak, which has only recently gotten out of control:
For weeks, Raxxon Pharmaceuticals has been partnering with local teams across the globe to contain the recent viral outbreak.
Today, we regret to announce that despite Raxxon’s best efforts, the global infection rate has reached the tipping point. Many cities are unlikely to be salvaged, and citizens everywhere should evacuate to safer regions immediately.
As the global infection has begun to run rampant, Raxxon has moved on to Phase 2 — evacuate and exterminate. The difficult choices players make now will lay a path for humanity — “search desperately for those final healthy survivors as Raxxon’s power reaches its apex, or watch as the undead overrun your city.”
At the beginning of the game each player will need to choose one of six specialists who are working with Raxxon to evacuate healthy citizens and eliminate sick citizens.
Raxxon Cards will function similarly to Crossroads cards from Dead of Winter, featuring stories and paths related to the characters in play.
Players will face a grid of face down citizen cards. Gameplay takes place in rounds, with each round revealing a new grid of citizens from the citizen deck. Actions will allow the cards to flip, revealing the healthy and sick citizens, each triggering different effects when flipped. Character actions interact spatially with the grid affecting rows, columns and adjacent cards. Actions will also have stacking consequences that will resolve over future turns.
Once all players have passed in a round a new crowd of cards is created and the action continues. Only if all the healthy citizens are evacuated will the players win the game. If the infection deck runs out (a deck of only sick people) or Raxxen maxes out their power the players will lose and face a long, cold, Winter.
Releasing in October 2017
Raxxon will be available in October. With a suggested age range of 14+, you’ll need 1-4 evacuators who are willing to commit about an hour to saving humanity.
Set in the Plaid Hat World, each of the Raxxon games will include 2 new, exclusive Dead of Winter characters. Meryl Wolfe and KD James will help you fight the outbreak in Raxxon and will carry over to join the colonies of Dead of Winter. Each copy of Raxxon comes with character cards, standees, and crossroads cards.
IDW Games has just announced that they will be creating a board game based in the Wayward comic universe. This will be a fully cooperative game that is being designed by Jon Gilmour, co-designer of the highly rated Dead of Winter. Not much has been released yet about it other than the game being based in the universe of Wayward and featuring it’s iconic characters. Wayward is a comic where “teenagers imbued with supernatural power are defending the world from Yokai, Japanese mythological creatures and spirits.” The comic has been in print since 2014 and has even recently been optioned for a television series by Manga Entertainment. Check back here for more info as the game continues it’s development, and read the press release below for more information.
San Diego, CA — IDW Games announced today that it is working closely with writer Jim Zub and illustrator Steven Cummings on an upcoming Wayward board game. Designed by Jon Gilmour, co-designer of Dead of Winter and Outpost: Siberia, Wayward is a fully cooperative board game where players assume the roles of the comic’s heroes working together to defeat villains controlled by the game itself.
Set in modern Tokyo, Wayward is an ongoing series published by Image Comics featuring teenagers imbued with supernatural power defending the world from Yokai, Japanese mythological creatures and spirits. Since launching in August 2014, Wayward has gained critical acclaim and a dedicated readership. The first volume of the series, “String Theory,” made the Young Adult Library Services Association’s 2016 List of ‘Great Graphic Novels for Teens’ and has been favorably reviewed by many outlets, including Kirkus. In addition, Wayward was recently optioned by Manga Entertainment for development as a television series.
Jerry Bennington, VP of New Product Development, said, “IDW Games is ecstatic about working with Jim Zub, Steven Cummings, and Jon Gilmour on a project with as much recognition and fandom as Wayward. As a lifelong tabletop gamer, Jim’s creativity goes beyond just managing the IP. His input and feedback about gameplay and design have been invaluable to us, and will surely produce a product that embodies the soul of the comic series.”
Jim Zub said, “Wayward is a passion project for Steven and I, and games are near and dear to our hearts, so getting the chance to bring both of those wonderful elements together with Jon and the rest of the IDW Games crew is an absolute thrill.”
Zub is a Harvey and Shuster Award-nominated comic writer (AVENGERS, DUNGEONS & DRAGONS, SAMURAI JACK, FIGMENT), and the creator of the original comic series GLITTERBOMB and SKULLKICKERS.
Cummings is an American comic book artist based in Japan (DEADSHOT, LEGENDS OF THE DARK KNIGHT, STREET FIGHTER, FORAGER).
IDW Games is well known for its excellent tabletop adaptations of beloved intellectual properties. Their licensed board games include X-Files, Back to the Future, and the upcoming Planet of the Apes and Atari series of games.

“We’re not the only humans left in this town anymore.” Your Dead of Winter colony is about to get neighbors courtesy of the new Warring Colonies expansion from Plaid Hat Games.
The new expansion features a pile of new content that can expand your existing Dead of Winter or Long Night game including:
15 new survivors
50 new crossroads cards
43 new items
11 new crisis cards
We were suspicious when they arrived across town and set up camp, but we tried to live in peace. No more. They’ve taken too much from us. Too much that we can’t get back. It’s time for revenge. It’s time for war.
Most of the new content will support a new team variant for the game in which two warring colonies will compete for the same limited resources and power. The new variant will combine both the Dead of Winter base set and the Dead of Winter: The Long Night games. As the two colonies battle against each other they will use a new fighting system. Battle might not always be in the best interest of the colonies however, as joint-colony crisis cards force colonies to cooperate and some also force some level of coercion every round.
Not playing with even players? The new odd-man-out Lone Wolf variant adds chaotic balance as the lone wolf pursues their own secret goals in a den by themselves and carrying out missions that will affect both of the other colonies.
The content for the new variants includes:
7 new main objectives
2 combat dice
Battle tactics cards
A combat track
The expansion is designed by Colby Dauch and Timothy Meyer for the game which was originally designed by Isaac Vega and Jon Gilmour.
Dead of Winter Warring Colonies can be used to expand either a Dead of Winter base set or Dead of Winter: The Long Night. Both Dead of Winter: A Crossroads Game and Dead of Winter: The Long Night will be required to play the warring colonies variant and the lone wolf module.
Dead of Winter was produced as the first Crossroads game from Plaid Hat Games. The game made all three lists in the Dice Tower Best of 2014 List, peaking at number 1 for the People’s Choice list while also being included on Tom and Eric’s lists. In the 2014 Dice Tower awards the game earned Best Game of the Year, Best Co-op Game and Best Game Theming. Dead of Winter earned the title awards for both Most Innovative Design and Most Thematic Game in the 2014 Golden Geek Awards. The title earned an As d’Or Game of the Year nomination, an Origins Award for Best Board Game nomination among many other nominations in 2014.
Those who were lucky enough to go to GenCon have most likely already seen this, but apparently Flick ’em Up is getting a zombie make-over. Presenting Flick ’em Up Dead of Winter (courtesy of Jonathan Gilmour’s twitter), the game combination that I doubt anyone saw coming, and some thought was just a clever re-theme of the original. But it is indeed real and includes things like busted up cars, individual player boards, and a zombie “dice” tower. More info will become available as the game continues it’s development, but until then we will have to content ourselves with a picture or two.
Asmodee is continuing its expansion in the board game world by entering into exclusive talks to acquire F2Z Entertainement. F2Z is the publisher and distributor of labels like Z-man Games, Plaid Hat, and Filosofia which include power house titles like Dead of Winter, Pandemic Legacy, and Carcassonne. Asmodee is looking to continue increasing it’s international presence as well as strengthen it’s growing portfolio of excellent games. On the other side, F2Z looks at this deal as an extension of the close business relationship they have had with Asmodee up to this point. While there will no doubt be harbingers saying this is the continuing doom of the board gaming world, I think this can open up new doors for both companies. Here’s hoping for the best to both companies during these talks, and we will see the results in the coming months.

Rodney Smith, widely considered the nicest guy in board games has launched a crowdfunding campaign to support Watch It played for another year. Watch It Played is a YouTube channel that’s main focus is to teach viewers how to play games, and does it well. The channel also releases a significant number of game play videos in which viewers are asked to participate by helping make decisions for the players between episodes.
Here, Rodney explains why he’s asking for support:
“I have had the privilege of working on Watch It Played full time because of the support of my family, sponsors and viewers like yourself. The money I make from the show is how I contribute financially to my family, which allows me to keep creating videos.
If you have enjoyed some of the videos we create, please consider making a donation and claiming a perk!”
This year if the campaign is successful, extra funds will be used to:
Organize a live-streamed day of game playing
Support Pep MacDonald’s ongoing contributions to the Channel
Update the set and acquire better equipment
As with any crowdfunding campaign, Rodney is offering Perks to those who support Watch It Played. These perks include game promo’s such as a playable Rodney character for Dead of Winter by Plaid Hat Games; FLGS location card for 51st State from Portal Games; a Scythe encounter card from Jamey Stegmaier; Above and Below Building from Ryan Laukat, and a limited quantity of last year’s Promo’s. Also, as my favorite available perk, you could be listed as a Producer at the end of Watch It Played videos, and get early access to game play content.
This is Rodney’s only fundraiser for the year, so if you’re looking to offer your support, check out the IndieGoGo Campaign now.
The release date continues to inch closer on the upcoming expansion to Dead of Winter called The Long Night. As that time approaches, Plaid Hat continues to show off some of the new things you can expect to find in the expansion.
First are some new abilities for the colonists, like Lily Mae’s ability to set explosive traps on a die roll of 6+, this ability puts a trap in an entrance spot and when a zombie hits it, not only does it prevent the placement of that zombie, but also blows away all the other zombies at that location. Another change is that tokens are now double-sided so the barricades flip over to traps on the other side, noise markers can be flipped to indicate if they added zombies or not, and helpless colonists can flip over to become unruly colonists. Also talked about are the fact the original locations will be included on thicker card stock and their decks have been revamped with improved items, plus your starting items have been improved as well to increase utility. But the best thing mentioned though is the fact you can get a Pulse Cannon from the new Raxxon location, this equipment lets you teleport people and zombies anywhere you want them to go twice per round.
Dead of Winter is an amazing game and this preview shows that we will be getting more amazing content for the game, you can see the full post on Plaid Hat’s website as well as pre-order the game and receive the special Rich Sommer promo card.
